My favorite part of steamed hams was always the shift in Chalmers' expression when he caves into Skinner's bullshitting and accepts it as a possibility, a peace comes across him as his anger melts into a yearning for the transcendant, the sublime, to feel the presence of the divine beauty of creation, localized entirely within a kitchen. Loved the video. you captured it well.

glad my stupidity brings you joy
As a note toward the danger of this thing: Microwave oven transformers are a leading cause of death among electronics hobbyists. Really, don't do this. The safest it gets is "Sort of okay if you stay 3 feet away from it at all times".
TBH I think it is kinda irresponsible to put stuff like this on the internet because: It is super easy to do and super easy to kill yourself if you don't know what you are doing. Now this will be seen by millions of people. Some of those will be literally kids that like electronics and have access to a couple of microwave ovens transformers. The chance of someone dying literally because of this video is quite high. I suppose it is worth if the guy making the video will make a couple of grands with it right?
i was going to say something like this. microwave transformers are strong enough to kill you, and they have killed a LOT of hobbyists.
Yeah, that setup is rather terrifying.
I think it was something like a 70% rate of death among hobbyists that use them
@@voyagerrock1137 I don't know where you got that statistic, but I'm guessing that survivor bias has pretty heavily influenced it. If people play around with microwave transformers and don't die then it most likely Isn't registered, but if they do it is. Also, who goes around surveying if people have played around with mots?
Don't get the wrong impression, I think most people should stay far away from them if they don't have extensive knowledge of high voltage and high voltage safety. I've been doing high voltage and power electronics for well over 5 years and even though I have a solid grasp, I don't even dare. The danger to fun ratio simply Isn't worth it to me, especially when you can experience the beauty of high voltage by safer and cooler means such as solid state tesla coils or high frequency ac supplies such as unrectified flybacks.
I think the video creator, Alex, is also unqualified to use them but I don't know his level of knowledge so I may be wrong.
I can tell you with certainty that a 70% death rate is overblown. There are many talented hobbiest that use them in a safe manner.
i had a double microwave transformer setup inside a toolbox when i was younger, i'd sit there frying shit with it for hours

Capacitors do work in series they're just a lot weaker (think pulling two chained springs apart vs. pulling two springs next to each other apart) so it wouldn't surprise me if, with capacitors that big, capacitors in series wouldn't have built up enough voltage to start an arc even with the candle.

@@Ididathing As long as you bring back the "Steamed Ham shuffle" I think I can live with that.
I'm not really sure what the capacitors do in your design besides limiting the current on the HV side. In the microwave there is a diode to double the voltage (and make it DC).
You probably limited the current too much with the capacitors in series. The impedance of a capacitor is proportional to 1/C. So if you make C bigger (connect them in parallel) the impedance drops and more current can flow - which is needed to allow the arch to sustain it self.
Tangent note: the current on the secondary will mostly be determined by this capacitors and the resistance of the arc. As the arc increases in length the resistance of the arc increases, allowing less current to flow until the current is to small to sustain an arc. If you were to remove the capacitors, you would have less "resistance" to current and would have potentially longer arcs. But the current at the start of the arc (where the arc is short and thus has lower resistance) could be to much for the transformers to handle = possible thermal damage to the transformer.
What is your mothers ASL?
Wdym double the voltage? All the diode does is essentially cut off half of the AC wave to turn it into DC. If anything it would lower the voltage.
@@Iapetus11 unless its a diode-capacitor circuit
The capacitors are electrically in parallel with the output once the arc is struck, and this forms a resonant LC tank circuit that allows much more current to be picked up by the secondary. You can hear the more violent crackle once the capacitors are added from the various harmonics of 50Hz. The secondary will actually overheat much quicker than the primary like is usually the case. Basically the parallel vs. series arrangement of the capacitors just gets you in the realm of capacitance to resonate with whatever the inductance is.
That being said, those capacitors are usually rated around 2,200V and he wired two transformers in series, effectively giving closer to 4,000V. They won't last long :) sometimes its a bit frightening when they fail.
Iapetus-11
The diode and capacitor are used as a voltage doubler in a normal microwave circuit.
That's Jims Law mowing, it's a landscaping business in Victoria Canada, where I live. Which is bizarre since Alex probably lives in Victoria Australia
Capacitors in series lowers the overall capacitance, in parallel it adds the values directly in farads, I believe the formula is: in series 1/C total = 1/c1 + 1/c2...etc whilst in parallel C total = c1 + c2 etc
capacitors do work in series, it's just instead of summing their capacitance it makes the reciprocal of their reciprocals sums
Thanks
In my opinion, he should have used a dead-man's switch as well as going through a list of safety precautions.
Not true. You need the system to reasonate. You can't do that when the air gap is in series.
I think you just threw a sentence together with sci-fi terms 🤔
@@Stevobulfer Why would you require an oscillator circuit here? The Capacitors are being used to discharge over the leads.
I think the original comment is kind of right. I'm assuming that upon connections of those capacitors in series, their net capacitance lowered sufficiently, causing it to discharge at a potential lower than the sparking threshold for the distance between the leads.
