@@dr.ivoeggmanrobotnik4011 Depending on how much you like older 3d platformers, there was an HD port of the first Ty the Tasmanian Tiger game. It's more of an upscaled port with some retexturing rather than a ground up remake, so it still has a lot of jank with some platforming that's too specific or some minigame like things that just needed some more refinement, but I just finished it myself and I honestly absolutely loved. Certainly not perfect but if you've enjoyed games in the style, it might be worth it.
Sorry, I know I'm being a walking ad here but I want the other Ty games to get similar ports or even a fifth game (there was a fourth that came out of nowhere in like 2013). Still, I am glad that crash is getting a fourth game in the style of the first three (even if the "fourth" part is incredibly confusing considering he has had like 6+ games, many of which in the same style, and fight me, I liked crash of the titans) and do plan on getting it and the HD remake when I finally graduate in the fall. I'll probably do the same with spyro too.

When people say "don't judge a game by its trailer," I get confused. Like, that's the whole point of promotional materials; they show you the game to get you hyped (i.e. pre judge the game positively). If advertising doesn't make me want to play a game, don't blame me. Blame the ad campaign.

the difference is that the next time they announce a new "Wario Land" you'll get to be confident that it isn't Warioware so there's a good chance it is closer to what you want, with Paper Mario they've done nothing to change the brand identity so every time they announce a new Paper Mario we're forced to wonder what kind of Paper Mario it is, instead of when a new Warioware is announced there's no reason to think it might be Wario land, cuz that's not what it's called.

Why would any F-Zero fan play Mario Kart? When F-Zero is the VERY anti-thesis to that series?
It doesn’t have any items. You have a finite number of lives. You can go even faster than Mario Kart, and it’s level design is designed for that alone. And you have worldbuilding and lore behind why you have these racing taking place.
The best Mario Kart can provide to F-Zero fans is 200cc, and even then it’s way too fast for any level in Mario Kart besides the F-Zero DLC levels.

Does anyone else find it weirdly cognitively dissonant how the flagship default mainline MARIO series of games, the 3D platformer ones, get to go completely crazy with wild crazy imaginative ideas and concepts with every game, Odyssey more than ever making every world feel like a different art style and unique inhabitants? And whenever the rare opportunity comes that a spin-off Mario game gets to pluck a little piece of them it feels like a big deal, like say if Rosalina popped up in a Golf game. But no the spin-offs that revolve around exploring Mario's world and fleshing it out at a more personal level, the RPGs, they got to stick most of all to good ol' Super Mario Bros. settings and assets and scrape what they can from them.

The series was originally named "Mario Story", with the localized name outside Japan is "Paper Mario". While the Paper Mario name has stuck over time, the series (or at least, the first two games) was not made with "paper" as a major part of the theme or gameplay.
Notably, the moment they started to focus on the paper aesthetic was the moment the games veered away from the things that made the first two games so loved. So yeah, I'm certainly going to be hesitant about the game as well.

They weren’t shoving it down your throat every second. They weren’t shoving the paper aesthetic down your throat the entire game. Nothing and no one acted out like they knew they were made from paper cutouts in the old games. Them and the story played out like it would any other tale set in a real world of flesh and blood. The paper curses in TTYD weren't gimmicks. Nor abilities you had from the very get go. 4th wall breaking? Sure. *@Senior Shrek* I actually have a few ideas on stuff that could’ve been improved. For Sticker star, I think they really need a level up system. Basically instead of beating a boss and getting a new page, I think you can level up and get more pages in your Sticker book. Another level up could be HP. As for a third upgrade, I don’t really know. There isn’t any gimmick in Sticker Star that I think could warrant a third upgrade, so I’ll leave it at 2 for now. And I think some more character variety can be implemented. And I don’t mean huge characters added, I mean little added clothes or color differences to make the characters look unique. Example, the three Goombas in the “Prologue” and Level 1 of World 1, give the three different designs instead of being three generic Goombas. Another example is the Toad in Worlds 1,2,3,4 and 5, the one who gets beat up by random enemies. Give him a unique design! Don’t just have him look like a generic toad! He likes to paint right? Give him a painter outfit! Or just something to make him look unique! And a smaller detail for the battle system, allow the player to choose which sticker hits which enemy. That would be appreciated. These would definitely improve Sticker Star, while maybe not make it the best game ever, perhaps it would improve it to be a solid sequel. Maybe something like Super Paper Mario, where it’s not the game everyone is hoping for, but it can still give some joy to the game.

To be honest, as someone who is actually a big fan of SS, CS, and is excited for OK
I understand where you're coming from.
You just simply want a franchise that has been dormant since 2007 or 2004 (It depends on if you see Super as a true continuation or not) to return from the dead.
Donkey Kong may have continued to get new games after the Country series but the Country series was still dead. and likewise, when it did come back, it arguably still didn't since Returns and TF, much like Origami King, are very different games in a lot of ways.
A game being different doesn't mean it's bad or low quality.
It just means it's not the same.
I feel the people who think you're moronic for feeling this way are missing that point.

They absolutely spite their fanbase. They spite the entire gaming industry. They are so enamored with the smell of their own ass, especially in a post-Wii era. They literally think they know better than everyone else and would rather tell you what kind of game you should like rather than make a game that you know you'd like.
This arrogant philosophy extends into both their software and hardware development. They insist on pumping out dated technology with a random gimmick to justify it. Even in the cases where the gimmick is a cool concept (such as Wii or Switch), they also insist on putting in less than the bare minimum in regards to including even the most basic of modern multimedia, communication, and online features. The only modern online feature they adopted this generation is the fact that they charge you money for it. Other than that, they've actually REMOVED features from their consoles, much in the same way they remove features (or new entries) in many of their iconic franchises.
Ironically, for as much as Nintendo prides itself on innovation, they are equally as proud of their own stagnation and regression.

I honestly feel like they should have given us a platformer paper mario again rather than a puzzle paper mario. I know that in SPM gameplay is a common gripe, but I think the game was amazing and from rpg to platformer, given the battle quality in sticker star and color splash, I feel like the series would have done a lot better as a platformer than a gimmicky battle-type puzzle game where most rpg elements are badly designed anyhow.

100% agree here. I've seen a lot of people dismiss people being disappointed, and it's always so confusing to me. Let me be sad that the thing I liked isn't what I like anymore.
I also want to say: I don't mind if they use Paper gimmicks in Paper Mario. That wasn't really the issue for me. I see those as potentially really interesting if they are treated with some tact, and not just "haha we're made of paper!" Both Color Splash and Origami King have a element of darkness in them that *could* be really cool in a game like Thousand Year Door. The idea that people get the color sucked out of them, or get converted into origami versions of things has the potential to be kinda spooky/unnerving in a narrative sense if they were taken seriously. It's kind of like a kid friendly version of the concept of body horror, and it works.
Let's, for a minute, imagine a game like Paper Mario where they used those two ideas, but in a less self-aware sense. Like, everything was still made of paper and the like, but it was treated like it was in the first batch of Paper Mario games. Imagine the bad bad is sucking the life-force of the population out of people to fuel their quest for world conquest, or to summon an ancient evil being visualized by the act of sucking the color out of people ala Color Splash. Imagine they took the idea of origami-ifying and treated it as this almost uncanny valley sense, where you are faced with things that look familiar, but extremely "off," ala the opening moments of the Origami King trailer. As far as I'm concerned, this could be really, really neat.
You could do this with almost any paper gimmick, and if it wasn't trying to be cute/coy with the idea by making everyone talk about being creased or soggy or whatever paper term. Modern Paper Mario is too focused on being like "we all know we're made of paper, isn't that funny?" and it's distracting. There are ways to do the paper gimmick concepts well, but the Paper Mario devs/Nintendo just don't seem interested in being clever with them when it comes to games "aimed at children."

    Buh...what are trailers for, then?

    • @PatManDX
      @PatManDX Před 4 lety +32

Trailers are technically MEANT to make you assume stuff about the game, but it's reductive to say that you can get an accurate picture of the game or film or whatever from it.
I feel like trailers can be misleading and Nintendo has been guilty of making trailers that make the games seem more than what they really are. One of the BOTW trailers showed this really action-packed sequence will epic swelling music, and they used pretty much every cinematic they had in the game to sell us on it, but it gave this false impression that it was this epic, story-heavy game, which it wasn't. Don't get me wrong, BOTW was incredible, but it waaay more meditative than that one trailer led a lot of people to believe.
Granted, a lot of this comes down to people hyping themselves up for the game, but I do think the assertion that you can't assume fully assume everything from a trailer is a fair one. They often share too little to give anyone a good picture, and they're not meant to be a full picture, cause then you spoil the game.
That said, Arlo's probably right that it's probably not going to be the game he wants. I think you definitely can tell that much from what we've seen.
I just really hope people give the game a fair chance when it comes out and aren't too caught up in the frustration of it not being like the originals (I may have not played the originals, but I don't blame anyone for being annoyed that they seem to refuse to go back to its formula). I want this game to be good, and for Nintendo to not give up on Paper Mario. It'd be a tragedy if it got bombed again because all that, and while I doubt a majority of people will do that, I know gamers will do a lot of gross stuff for less.

"Don't judge based on the trailers"
As others have said, yeah it seems kinda silly for people to say "don't judge based on the trailer" when the entire point of the trailer is to persuade you to buy the game. But even more than that, I feel like it's a dishonest criticism because even if you waited for reviews and said "game looks weak" or bought and played the game and said "yeah I still don't like it", they wouldn't suddenly be like "Well OK, you have now acquired a sufficient level of evidence for to judge the game". They would still find a reason to call you entitled, unreasonable, whiny, or whatever ad hom.
    -
And aside from that, unfortunately the quality of the last two games does function as evidence for the quality of The Origiami King. If you make two bad/not-great games in a row, you have a higher burden of proof to demonstrate your next game will not also be not-great. Like if you didn't enjoy Halo 4 & 5, you should probably be wary of the quality of Halo 6 even if they seem to have learned some lessons. It is totally valid and reasonable to be skeptical; probably more reasonable than looking at the trailers and assuming they've suddenly just figured everything out.
    -
I'm not saying with any of this that The Origami King will be bad; it probably will be better than Color Splash. I'm not super sure if I'll buy it at release, but I am...somewhat optimistic about it. But I do get tired of people asserting or implying that this is a return to form, or that past criticisms of the games have been addressed. (People jumped the gun with "Partners are back!" and best, they didn't really understand WHY people wanting partners back and what that means and at worst--no, they didn't bring them back.)

Well to be fair, Paper Mario: The Origami King probably started development before Alpha Dream filed for bankruptcy. Doesn't mean Nintendo won’t try their hardest to differentiate the two series though and while they will probably succeed, it isn't what the fans want.
UPDATE: After seeing that article that just came out a day before Origami King came out, it seems that it has less to do with differentiating the two RPG series and more so to having it as faithful to platformer Mario as possible. This is probably due to Miyamoto being outright stubborn when it comes to other studios handling Mario. My solution for Nintendo and Intelligent Systems would be for them to make a brand new IP using the classic Paper Mario formula, good storytelling and while still doing whatever with modern Paper Mario. And if Nintendo won't allow that, indie devs will and they already have in fact (i.e. Bug Fables).

What a lot of detractors think is that we want another clone of The Thousand-Year Door. Not true. What we want to see is Nintendo return to the formula that worked and build on it. Much like what Alpha Dream did with their Mario and Luigi series. Bowser's Inside Story played quite differently from Superstar Saga, but they incorporated interesting gameplay mechanics to keep things fresh. With Paper Mario they just keep inserting stupid gimmicks that detract from the experience, rather than adding to it. We liked the badge system because it worked. We liked the story because it engaged us. Another example is Mario Odyssey. Even though Super Mario Odyssey incorporated a "capture" gimmick not seen in the previous games, it still stuck closely to the Mario 64 formula that a lot of fans wanted to see for so long. And it improved on it! If Nintendo can make 4 New Super Mario Bros. games, then what's stopping them from making a Paper Mario like the first two? If this game ends up being good, this could vindicate Nintendo's headstrong mentality about this new formula, and completely stamp out any possibility of there ever being a return to form. Sucks we live in an age where you cannot freely express discontent with anything anymore without getting attacked. Arlo had to use up a majority of the time of this video hoping people don’t attack him for having his own opinion.

It's the other way around as well though. People are feeling ashamed that they think they game looks fun. Myself included. It's pretty rough when you keep an open mind to something like this and everyone else is like "nah, its not TTYD it wont be good and youre stupid for thinking it will be good. Remember color splash ans sticker star? looool" (abridged version of a comment I once received)
