- On Sunday 5th May 2024, Newcastle's Bigg Market had an 80/90's throwback party and was attended by almost 2500 revellers. It was a fantastic party and this video captures the highlights.
The event was organised by ex DJ 'Chris the Disc'. Wrist bands gained entry to 8 participating bars at £10 each with proceeds going to four local charities.
These include:-
Tiny Lives at the RVI
Alan Shearer Foundation
Blaydon Centre for Autistic & Disabled Adults
Hylton Cat & Dog Shelter
Ok, so this my favourite video you've ever done.. LOL..🤣😂😅 Absolutely mint!!!!
😃👊🏻🙏
They were the best days,no mobiles so people actually talked face to face, brilliant video Eddie I’m watching it in Thailand and sitting with a smile on my face, thank you
Love it. I was student in Newcastle from 89-93. I remember being warned against going to the Bigg Market, but I ended up working behind the bar in The Bacchus, and then Bourgognes up near the bus station. Met loads of great people and had many bigg nights.
Back in the mid 80s it was like getting into a football match.Packed Great Great times.
Worked in Balmbras, planet earth and rockshots mid to late 90s. Mad times!!
Nice one. Everyone looked genuinely delighted to be there and I recognised three people I know. Chris made a great point about a lot of lads and lasses in middle (and later) age have almost zero social life and this seems a great way for them to reconnect.
This was a cracking watch, been about 25+ years ago since been out there, met the most beautiful lass there once called Nina. I wondered what happened to her. Many happy nights down there.
Great feature brough back many memories. First went to Bigg Market in 1986 when i was 17. Remember in late 80s the joys of 1080 cider, Diamond White and Red Stripe and taking the last beer with me to have on last bus home from Haymarket !!
Red stripe, 30th birthday in rock shots drank 28 cans of red stripe, went from happy as F#£k to pissed then sober literally drank myself sober 3 in the morning rockin out of there straight into the chilli pepper for a kebab & pizza 👌🏼 them were the best days of my life
Thanks it's brought back so many memories I live on the south coast and wish I was there happy days best video keep it up but its made me home sick
I lived up there 7 yrs i Royal Mail postie doing that area 88-95 was a blast , I knew toon centre like back my hand . Jeff, birkenhead.
Many good memories Sunday, when Newcastle beat Man U 1997 .Monday never happened what a day, pleased to here this video but now retired in Bangkok, NUFC,
I remember, back in 2006 (yes that's almost 20 years ago now!) I was working in Alaska. I went in to a random bar and on the table was a brochure which what looked like Greys Monument on it. I picked it up, saw Greys statue then turned it over to see an ad for a weekend getaway to Newcastle upon tyne and 'Europe's best party place' the Bigg Market. I couldn't believe it. Legendary.
☝️
Loved it "BACK IN THE DAY" great times great days/nights just met the lads in the same bar same time and Toby around the Bigg Market bars and around the Grainger Market bars ❤
Used to finish work on a Friday get home and changed and straight to bee hive. Crawl out of pig and whistle at an ungodly hour. Then be in some random kitchen on the west end
I’m sat here in Canada wishing I was there…recognized a few faces from back in the day! I’m sure there were many more there that I knew back then. Always so much fun in the Bigg market and the rest of the toon late 80s and 90s. Many happy memories from Yel (sticky floor), balmbras, Bewicks (cheap cocktails!), Dobson’s (cheap trebles) Leg ends, Buz, Bliss, Madison, The Studio/Ritzy.
Used to go to Thresher before a night out and pack wor pockets with 20/20 or thunderbird then top up our drinks in every bar…got barred from Dobson’s for a while for doing that!
I’ve gotta go to next years event! And maybe see if Rezerection is holding any raves around the same time!
☝️👊🏻
What a cracking idea and brings back memories although in my case it didn’t last long enough as I was in the forces by the time I was 19. Another cracking video Ed
The video has me looking forward to June when I come to newcastle for a couple of days
I was a taxi driver in the town for 21 years and lived a crackin life , nights off were spent down the Bigg market and nights working were spent down there as well . I could write book after book about my exploits and plenty of other tales from the Bigg market but I'll leave it there for fear of dropping particularly me in the crap and plenty of others. Brilliant video as usual Eddie and fantastic memories .
I’d pay for this book
I genuinely would have to leave the country , far too much about myself and an much bigger amount of true stories about the prominent and not so prominent . There's no way I would betray anyone .
Amazing!! Well done for this!! ❤
great vid eddie! drinks wise, my tipple was either a can of red stripe, or cider with blackcurrent!
Guy on the Guinness is clearly a legend.
It was a brilliant day and night. Andy is a top class bloke 👌
Brilliant.
Excellent fun video 😎
Great video Eddy! Brings back happy memories! Top lad who organised it
Brilliant vlog that Eddie. Happy vibes and Disco Chris is some boy.
Brilliant video mate love it
Class video Eddie! Had some belta times doon the bigg market. The Mayfair was a haunt for me and the boys as well.
Quality video this. I’m only 42, but remember all them bars. Many quality nights out. Glad I’m old enough to have caught that era 🙌🏼
I'm the manager of the building complex, Cathedral Square, that runs down the centre of the Bigg Market!!!
pure class remember them days well not forgetting the canny lad
The Bigg Market was far better when I began drinking at 18 in 2002. I miss Pig & Whistle, Yell, Balmbras, The Cage, Kiss etc. The pop bars were great back then. It didn't matter if you wore a t-shirt or not. There are too many places now being gentrified. I say, bring back the pop bars of the 2000's! The only one left is Popworld. I loved the old Idols under the Newgate Street hotel. Long gone! 😢
Well done Eddie a cracking video love it I must get there next year
👊🏻👍🏻
That took me back a lot of year's Tiffany's on a Sunday night as a kid and the big market some cracking nights out loved the pig and whistle atvb Jimmy 😎😎👍👍
Great event - back in the day all over again!! Red Stripe for a quid 😋
Great job Eddy! Fantastic coverage of a brilliantly organised event. Raising funds for very worthy charities. Looking forward to the 2025 reunion! 🎉
👊🏻👍🏻
Absolutely fantastic, trebles for a quid in the Blackie Boy!
Great vid
Brilliant pal.
My favourite drink was colt 45 American malt licker , it was lovely stuff, we used to drink that in BAR 42, they were fantastic nights in LEGENDS BAR 🎉
God bless 'em, they're all having a great time and absolutely nee bother. I had many a good Toon neet oot in the eighties so these folks are definitely from my era. Great video, Eddy, I was especially pleased to see Bananarama doing that impromptu gig right at the end there. Struggling for the right notes a bit, so no change there then. 🤣
😂
Just watched this video and it was fantastic and I even seen my brother there and he said it was a cracking day.
Good on them hope they all had a great time and even better all for charity. We all remember those days, it is such a shame I live in Wiltshire and can't easily get up to the toon, as I would be there in a shot!!! I remember when Hooch (alcoholic lemonade) or unbelievably blue bols and lemonade, so the drinks were not necessarily the highlight but the atmosphere and the lack of mobiles and social media certainly were with proper face to face communication. Although there is a certain irony that the whole 80/90s reunion was arranged through Facebook but suppose that is the contradiction of modern life.
Another belter from Tyneside life, South Shields and Whitley Bay were great stomping grounds too, that from a 70 year old, but did we ever know how to party. Thanks Eddy.
🙌
Cracking podcast gutted couldn't be there,I used to work in the Bigg Market from 93. to 2008 as a doorman at the Pig and Whistle and Masters great to see my old boss Andy and Andy and Sharon also a few faces from back in the day looked a brilliant day maybe next year
I'm still smiling and reminiscing about the late seventies eighties nineties, every pub and bar were packed on a Friday and Saturday, 10/15 of us would start about 6pm and by 11pm we would all be lost from one another but all end up in the same club and in our favourite corner, I was the dancer and never off the floor, worst was if you had no money to go out...we always had that one lad who would never buy and drink who we called TAF...yep 'tight as fuck'
Loved the video...much cheers from an ex party animal
I forgot about losing everyone. That used to happen all the time.🤣🤣🤣🤣
I used to drink in the bigg market from 1982 it was always bouncing great to see everyone enjoying it today

Brilliant day it was bigg Market back in the day every weekend, but pop world & that pole had to be done, sorry Dj but I did slide off it & 23 year ago on that pole for me birthday got ermmm took out the doors 😆 bouncers back then eh brill day but cocktails go down to quick but bring on the next one thank you you all have done amazing for these charities, pat on the back for you's all x
Masters, Maceys, Robinsons and Kiss - that was my route on a Friday night 1997/1998 with those stagecoach bus tickets that got you two bottles of Carling for £ 1.50
Good times
Todays youth dont know what they are missing, someone should organise a day like this but it should be a tech free zone, no bloody phones allowed.
Eeeee great memories from 1993 til I moved to Leeds in 1996. Back in the day we got the bus from Ryton, free school bus pass, (in 6th form) 5 bars, 5 half’s of lager and last bus home! 😂
Love it 😀
@@TynesideLife a canny night out for £5!!! Lol
@@TynesideLife always a bonus if you got the last bus home and a lad bought you a single red rose 🌹

Im sure that fella used to dj the vault on a match day. Good crack. Nowt better than sneaking into bars when u were under 18 in ur rockports and lacoste shirt. Cant just cut it off at 2000 tho the bigg markets was still quality until 2007ish.
The line has to be drawn somewhere I suppose and 2000 is a good a year as any.
A few iced cold pints of Harp about 65p back then.

I'm sure everybody remembers the Mad dog 20/20s, but does anybody remember the cheap knock off called Bombas? Used to come in vibrant colours that didn't match the fruit? Blue Banana [might have been strawberry] used to turn your shite green.
Used to turn your shite green. Just made me laugh out loud. 🤣🤣

its great to see everyone enjoy there selves and the good thing about is with everyone being over 40 ish there will be no jumpy jacks i.e trouble makers
Yeah i kind of remember when the popularity of the Big Market faded and the Quayside took over. In fact I remember when popularity of Whitley Bay faded. Late 90s i remember going to Whitley and it was dead so we would jump on the Metro into the city.
Aye, even the Bigg Market now is dead on a Friday
Autumn gold cider
I drank Redstripe. Haha
Nice. I miss the 80s. Edited: Red Stripe, the Jamaican beer. Now I see everyone drinking Coors Light in Newcastle lol piss water
😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
So sad that the Bigg Market is what it is now. Not a patch on late 90s early 2000s
I'm quite blokey, but in the day, I was partial to a rum and black.
Blastaways!!
Kangaroos!!
used to work in Presidents, and Balmbras. Great times.
And Cans of Breaker, in the Bass pubs. Stronger than Red Stripe and cheaper.
Haunted by the ghost of The Fat Slags from Viz magazine 😁
Cherry B and Cider!
Circus Circus and Masters back in the day nowadays absolutely rotten place!
Worst drink ever … Blast away! Best ice cold Red Stripe! Big market time 1988 on…
