Welcome to my Channel,
My name is James and I live full time in my tiny van, however this is not just a van life channel. I enjoy travel, food and drink and making videos 🙂
When I turned 50 I decided I’d had enough of the rat race and working long hours just to pay rent and bills, life was passing me by and I needed a drastic change.
FAQ
Where is Helen?
Helen has a responsible full time job and two children so unfortunately she can’t join me on every trip. I really wish she could.
What equipment do you use?
My vlogging camera is a GoPro Hero 9 but I also use my pixel 6a phone and Lumix G80 camera for other footage
For editing, I used Premiere Pro on an old laptop but I’m saving to buy a more powerful computer.
Do you have children?
Yes I have a 6yr old daughter who lives with her mum but I see her quite a lot. I don’t usually put her on the vlogs and if I do, I block out her face for privacy reasons. I also have a grown up son.
How do you fund your lifestyle?
I don’t need as much to live these days since going full time van life but I receive a small percentage of income from the ads that CZcams put on the videos.
Why the sponsored videos?
I only accept sponsorship from companies I use and trust, this is my fulltime job and my income, it’s how I support my family. (I have Patreon if you prefer videos with no ads).
How do I contact you?
Please contact me here: james@bythecurb.co.uk
I'm a Mancunian, used to park my truck at St James on a night out then go into city for a pint the Strawberry, inventers, farmers arms, etc this was back in the 80s beautiful city, the Geordies so friendly have some cracking memories thank you
The Farmers was a superb pub
The Farmers Rest... RIP😢
@paulcook602 dodgy goings on to get Marks and Spencers there, not only The Farmers but we also lost the Newcastle Kebab Centre
@@kinga8876Your not wrong there... Money over greasy palms to be able to knock down a grade two listed building like the Farmers. Kebab centre was a class of its own, made famous by Sid the Sexest.. 😂.... We nearly lost the other side of Percy Street about the same time but the Newcastle public were having non of it after the Marks and Sparks fiasco. Shame about the Broken Doll as well. Gone for the sake of two feet of foot path. Criminal!!!?
Unfortunately the farmers isn't their anymore.. Happy days
Definitely is!
Stayed for two years during uni in the toon, and no place has made me feel at home like it has (not even where I'm from). The architecture, the vibe, the food, the streets, and most importantly the people who are outstandingly kind and warm. I miss the walks there with the lads, getting some coffee, Greggs and walking around near the monument.
Simple stuff, special place ❤
Thank you.
well you can come again!
@@jayveebloggs9057I sure will. It's all I think of every single day.

Many happy memories of going to Newcastle to see my Nana and Grampa. Coming from N. Ireland it was brilliant. My Dad was a Geordie. I love love Newcastle.
You would hate it now it's not our city anymore😢😢
Thank you James and Helen for doing us Geordies proud, and showing our beautiful town. Shame about the weather grr. Hope you enjoyed it, and come back soon. Brilliant video as always. Much love to you both ❤
I'm from Newcastle those photos at the end brought a tear to my eye we have lost our city to big corporations.
There's sadly so so many cities gone much the same way. The perfect example is how swiftly so many of those little independent sports shops have just evaporated from our towns & cities. Only JD & Sports Direct seem to control the monopoly now and they are 80% leisure wear, trackie tops or replica shirts of the "London/NW big six" or PSG/Barca/Real Madrid. You'll find a Newcastle United shirt, but only in Newcastle.
Shops need the support to keep competitive with online shopping.
I visit the area from Norfolk to see the family every so often & all I can do is look in the city centre & reminisce about how much nicer it was in the 70s/80s, especially when the Metro was only just built & you could come in from the Coast in around 25mins, get anything, then just hop on a train home. Now, I just come in & hope some shops still exist from my last visit, meanwhile the Metro fare's been ramped up yet again 😢
Your very right it's not the old lovely newcastle I was born bred many many moons ago it was the greatest place ever the town centre for night life was second to non back in the old days, it's horrible and dangerous now it's not our friendly city now it's the end

I love Newcastle. My daughter is at the Uni in Newcastle, she loves it and the town and has not intention of leaving once her degree is completed. Great pictures at the end. Thank you very much for making this video.
I am a Taxi Driver in Newcastle and more and more i hear the young students telling me they are staying in Newcastle once Uni ends, bring it on, Newcastle will be far better for it.
@@glenbolton make a change from pakistanis anyway .....!
Newcastle is criminally underrated as a city, (which helps in keeping costs down!)
Im born and bred, lived here 36 years, but Id say at least 50% of my friends have moved here for work or Uni, not knowing much about the city, and basically said.. "Yup, this is where im living now"...
I prefer York or Durham, prefer the accents in those cities, not keen on the Gordie accent. Prince Andrews daughter graduated and went to live back down south, more jobs there.
@@gareth265 yes she gave me a hand job a couple of years ago .. . .
I did a road trip throughout the UK a few years back and Newcastle was definitely at the top of the list. Lovely old town plus the Geordies are lovely people
Not any more hard to find friendly people here now , it's awfull it's dirty it's not our city.
I was born bred here .
The great old town we where is no more ,its heart breaking, never to return

@@gareth265 i agree to dissagree sorry the North East ppl are the best ! Well known for there friendly mannor far and wide !
One of the Georgian houses in front of you at Eldon Square, the one with the blacked out windows, is actually just a facade. It disguises a giant air vent for the Metro system that runs directly below. The vent was installed in the 1970s keeping the existing exterior.
Been into the city every visit back and its only the last few years that I found that out too.
London has fake houses in some terraces to hide the cuttings for London Underground lines below.
Who on earth had a go at you for your highly entertaining pub crawl content? Send them my way and I will destroy them with my sardonic wit. Another great vlog full of interest and great visuals, and all topped off by that wistful ending. Thank you both!
Another place now on my bucket list. I'm a child of the 80's so I loved Auf Weidersehen Pet. Gotta get me sel to tha Toon 😀. Cheers for sharing ❤️🏴
If you watch the 1976 film of the TV series "The Likely Lads", there are dozens of film locations just East of the city along the A1058, then in places like Tynemouth & Whitley Bay.
Your in for a shock mate , it used to be a fabulous city used to be friendly and the town pubs where smashing .
Not !!!anymore it's not the same place ,it's not any of above it a different place now it's horrible and doesn't resemble our city any more
Best episode by a landslide. Cracking couple. Cracking content. What a city Newcastle is 👏
Lancashire lad here, newcastle is a top draw place. Few years back me n 2 lads walked hadrians wall, we did it west to east, everyone else was going tother way. Lads said to me why do we have to be different ? Replied trust me lads at the end of the walk weve 2 nights in a bnb n a night out like youve never experienced. Fuckn love the place, its awesome. Me n wife stopped over many times driving up to seahouses or berwick for holidays. Northumberland doesnt advertise itself n long may it continue. Doesnt need thousands of tourists descending 😂
Born bred there take it from me it's not the friendly nice city it was back in the day 😢😢
Riff raff!
How beautiful are Newcastle's buildings, love this video. Thanks for perseverance in the rain, it's nice to see the real UK weather, I miss it. love the videos you two make . Take Care
Brilliant video James. Love Newcastle. My grandma lived in Gateshead and she would take us there when we stayed with her as kids. Did not appreciate the architecture back then , but now I find it stunning.
Thank you so much for doing us Geordies proud !!
The ending to the video really touched me 😢 thankyou both ❤
Thank you, glad you liked it :-)
@@bythecurb you both are legendary 🙌 ❤️
A cracking tour of Newcastle I’m glad yous enjoyed it ❤
As you like the Architecture it's a pity you missed the Central Arcade just over the road from the Grainger Market it's small but worth looking at for the Ceiling. I'm a 83 year old Geordie and the Castle Keep brought back memories of being a 12 year old with my mates running around there, then there wasn't any of the information things and shops just the Castle.
I also have a soft spot for Newcastle fans there passion is inspiring like their city is. Amazing content James and Helen. I'm a passionate rams fan dcfc for life. 😊😊😊😊😊😊
Glad you guys didn't become the latest "Ashley Slaves" like we were. 15yrs of purgatory.
Geordie fans are bad loosers and delusional.
I dont know what sort of person would find themselves "triggered" by your recent pub crawl, but i could probably guess.
Keep doing what you are doing, it's highly entertaining.
Yep, lots of people call us alcoholics without realising we only go round the pubs once a fortnight!!

Newcastle looks nice, especially at night and even in the rain...cheers for showing it off to us James; good show mate 👍🐕🚐👊
I’m pleased you like the Toon! I’m from Blyth on the coast a few miles away. What I like about the Toon is that there is a lot packed into a small city centre. Great bars, restaurants, music venues, shops, people and craic. And, of course, St James Park. Magic.
Thanks for showcasing Newcastle so very proud of the City and the people ❤

Can't believe you missed the central arcade. Great video. Really enjoyed watching. Thank you
Anyone I show around Newcastle I take them in there and people just walk passed it and have no idea it's there.
Hasn't that gone now pulled down ?
@@jean2740 I never heard about it being pulled down.
What a cracking video guys, rain or not you have really sold Newcastle as a city to visit...amazing place with lots of friendly people and amazing architure to see..brilliant.
PS your editing skills are going through the roof James and Helenybobs is not only gorgeus but is so so friendly
the M&S is their oldest continuing store & was the first outside of Leeds
Fenwicks has been there at least 80 years also.
@leigh-mariehamilton3361 not quite sure of the relevance here a) Fenwick's flagship store was opened just over 140 years ago in Northumberland Street b) it has never opened a stall anywhere, let alone the Grainger Market , both shopping places excellent (in their own way though)
That was absolutely class , thanks for showing people my city and all your kind words , Ps loads more to see so make sure you return one day , you will be so welcome and one last thing Helen , nowhere is too posh in Newcastle , just get ya self in there 🍻🍻🍻
York and Durham are better, less riff raff and safer!
@@gareth265 You stick to York and Durham then , probably best for all of us 👍

Love this, my hometown, where I spent the first 28 years of my life (57 now!) . The Nightlife in the 80,s was absolutely amazing, still miss it now. So pleased you showed Grey street, its a must see if you visit Newcastle. Omg that ending really got me, childhood memories of the market❤
Ahhh James, thank you for your lovely comments about Newcastle and its architecture.
I can tell you have a soft spot for it. Im from Rotherham but wouldn't live anywhere else.
We live in South Shields and go up and stay at the Quayside for a couple of nights and just walk the streets looking at all the buildings. Love it, especially the Quayside at night.

You will love Newcastle, my son supports Newcastle was at the match against Bournemouth, up again on the 2nd March, loves it, his word buzzing, they are passionate Newcastle, sure you enjoyed your trip, plenty of good pubs 🍺🍷
Lovely tribute to my home town. I spend a lot of lunch times in the Grainger Market sitting stuffing my face watching the world go by. Love the vibe there. Hope you both enjoyed your time in our city :)
Another excellent funny review. My dad and his familys home town. Not been here for a long time. I have to go now after seeing this brilliant review 👍
Dunno how I ended up here but was glad I did! You two are great fun. Subscribed. As a local it was a joy to see you enjoy our wonderful city (even if the weather was a bit crap!) It's always good to see these things through other's eyes, it makes you appreciate what you have a lot more. Loved how you randomly went to that gig at the end! There's a lot to be said for spontaneity and not always staying "on-piste", as you put it. Hope you come back some day and explore some more, there's so much more to see!
Thanks for the sub mate, we're coming back in the summer to see one of our favourite bands
Great video of your visit to Newcastle! I'm a proud Geordie and I do love the city. Glad you had a good time and found a nice spot to overnight at. The Quayside is lovely.
I worked there for Moulinex, McKeag and Cooper in the late 60's and loved it!
All those lovely bars you’ve walked by on Grey Street!! Some of your kind of bars up the side streets too!! 😭😂
I reckon Helen & you should go to Edinburgh! You’ll both absolutely love it.
Edinburgh is much better than Newcastle!
Hi, nice to see you ventured to where I live. You were parked in Gateshead and crossed over bridge to Newcastle.. Helens " stare" is scarey
I think they were parked Newcastle side. Spillers car park
No they were parked on the north side of the Tyne. Look at the bridges on the left as they are walking along the Quayside.
Definitely parked on Newcastle side next to the Cycle Hub
Helen you seem to go from grumpy to loving life after a few on this vid, hope you are ok🍻
Such a beautiful city, I will definitely be visiting. Great video, lots of interest and loads of fun! 😊
take a special trip to Elswick and Benwell ...you will never forget it . . .!
We love Newcastle go there at least 3 times a year nice to see you together going on trips out 😊
Thank you for having some lovely things to say about my city so glad you enjoyed Newcastle it is very underrated but most people who come to Newcastle end up falling in love with it
James , Helen loved this one for a few reasons , my dear old mun was a Newcastle girl and we spent a lot of our school holidays down there , going too Whitley Bay and up the coast to Amble , My soulmate is also from Newcastle and we often visit the city and i love it up there , i believe it is under rated , our next visit is in April and we cant wait . When you were at the Castle guys the Bridge pub just behind it is great . but then again they have a load of good pubs , hope you both enjoyed James
Thanks James, we loved it
Newcastle is my home town I love it, thanks for all the positivity 😊

Used to work in Newcastle. Now in SW ,have not been back for 20 years so thanks for reviving some memories.Grainger market is where my mum used to get weighed and she was always too heavy! She might even be in your photos.
You were in my neck of the woods James I currently live about 10 miles from Newcastle. And it’s a great place. Which is why I’ve stayed up here cos I got family back down in Barnsley and some want me to go back there, but to be honest I prefer it here. I also love Barnsley but, I’ve just got so used to it here. The people up here seem calm and respectful of each other, and that puts me at ease. Unlike for example a town like Doncaster where there’s a sense of intimidation and threat and the people can seem prickly
Glad you guys had fun up here
Thank you for visiting our beautiful city! You’re right the architecture in Newcastle is superb. Grey street is my fave. Come back when the weather is nicer..I promise we do get some nice sunshine ☀️ New subscriber too.
