I've had 11 daschunds in the last 40 years. I crate trained every one of them. For those who think it may be it's not. I have a thin blanket that I put over the crate at night, leaving it up a few inches to get a nice air flow. Put a nice blanket inside and they will burrow to their hearts content. Everytime they graduate from the crate and I allow them to sleep in the bed, i leave the crate open. Everyone of my daschunds get off the bed and crawl back in the crate for the first few nights. They think it is their den. This is the best way to potty train a daschund.

My 2 dachshunds love their crate. When training them, I made sure to only let them out if they quit crying for at least 30 seconds. They learn quick! At night they slept with me under the covers, it was late winter, they woke me up when they needed out to potty, for mine it was usually once mid night then again early morning.

Learn something new each time I watch. I pick up my Lil'l guy next week so this is a big help.

Ive had lots of dogs and various breeds so varying levels of stubbornness but this super gradual way of crate training is really the best and especially not rewarding the crying.

Thank you! It sounds soo silly but you finally helped us move crate training in the right direction. I watched soo many videos and read soo many blogs but something just wasn’t clicking and I was starting to think dachshund… specifically my dachshund was impossible. Then one little part of your video made all the difference… I was letting him tell me when he needed to pee which was just telling him whining got him released… he almost always peed but he was getting up more frequently not less. Setting the alarm and taking him out at set times and ignoring all other times has been a game changer. We are down to once a night and it’s only been 5 days! Thank you!!!

Omg Holly i needed this video. I just got my mini dachshund last weekend and have been using a play pen for her and she just screams and cries the entire time shes in it and will sometimes even have an accident. I had bought her a crate as well but thought the same thing about the play pen being better for her. Im definitely going to try her crate now and see how it goes! I havent found a treat that she likes yet so idk how to encourage her. I also let her sleep with me but i want her to be comfortable with the crate when i need to leave or to have her own space to go to

Great video! My standard doxie never took to the crate when there were people around. She is very attached to us, so if there were people in the house, she would scream for hours. She was fine at night in the crate knowing that we were sleeping as well. We just got a new baby a few months ago and decided to use a pen this time around and its been great! Obviously the pen isn't the best for potty training, but as the weeks have progressed, she's using the puppy pad less and less and understanding that outside is for potty.

Maybe I missed it; what size crate is best for a full grown mini dog? Love this video, will definitely get the dog bowl attachment!

We used a doggie playpen. It folds up if we have to evacuate and it’s soft and comfy. My Doxie loves it!
