@@ca6177 I have a 14 yr old mini and have had her since she was 9 months. They truly get more stubborn with age. Not so much stubborn but set in her ways. She's my shadow and whines when I leave even if her dad is here. Overall, they are wonderful. Have had as many as 4 at one time but three have passed on.

Same, mine doesn't even acknowledge fireworks or thunder.
Mine only barks when she thinks there is a "house invader", like someone at the door, or slamming of doors including car doors.
She vocalizes what she wants with grunts mostly, a few whimpers, and the occasional foot stomp when she means business. Lol
A doxie that doesn’t bark is a unicorn doxie!!! 😂 mine always bark like savages when someone rings the doorbell. But a slight shake of the dreaded “penny can” will quiet them down.
A M mine never cared about fireworks either. And they tended to run to the window to watch thunderstorms. Dachshunds are rather lion hearted hound dogs! NO FEAR! 😊 ❤️

I have a dachshund, she’s 5 months old and almost completely house trained & she knows how to sit, stay, come and give paw. She is honestly one of the smartest little pups, it took 3 5 minute training sessions to get her to sit on command

Same here! My little pup just turned 3 months and is virtually completely house trained. The only time we ever have accidents is if we somehow miss out on her signals to go outside or if it’s pouring with rain. She currently knows ‘sit’ ‘leave it’ and is learning ‘heel’ when walking on lead, she understands them all but her overexcited stubborn nature means she’ll definitely be selective about what she WANTS to hear aha
I am going to get a new puppy next week, this is my third Dackel, I loved every single inch of my babies they lived for 17yrs, I miss them very much, this time it will be a piebald dabble, I find this breed above all, their love and loyalty are unsurpassed, I don't agree with have of this video

So we got a string of bells off Amazon and tied them to our bannister (we live in a 3 storey and garden is on the bottom) but hang wherever you want - garden door is where most people hang them. Then whenever you go out to the garden, get them to ‘touch’ the bell with their nose, OPEN THE DOOR/stair gate/ whatever and THEN give them a treat. Take them outside to do toilet only. If they get distracted bring them in. 5 mins tops. If they do the toilet PRAISE! Loads of treats. And just keep doing it. It takes persistence but give it time and pup should pick it up. The actual getting them to do toilet in the garden is the hard bit but they will eventually do it with time! If you find they’ve done an accident in the house don’t scold or tell off, just clean up and take outside and say your toilet cue. Ours is ‘do toilet’.
Before we taught ours the command ‘touch’, we hung the bell and let him figure it out. Every time he looked at the bell, treat, rang the bell treat. Then every time we took him out we just did the above until he started ringing it himself!
I’m happy to do a video on how we got ours to do it if you want? I’m not an expert or a trainer in any way shape or form but this has actually changed our lives 😂

Agree no cons. The cons are just adjustments, i.e. sleeping with a burrower under the blankets, being out smarted often.
I had my first one for 14 years and my recent one for 3 years, I have had no cons at all.
Trust me, the things you don't mind may be deal breakers for a lot of people! I'm pretty sure dachshund owners just learn to deal. :)

Every Dachshund I've had over the years, have hated rain. Sometimes, they would take care of business in the rain, but rarely. They would hold it, come back inside & pee on the floor! I didn't have carpet, thankfully, but loved them all so much, an occasional clean up was worth it. All 7 were rescues except one. Oscar was tossed over our fence & we found him, 6 weeks old, undernourished, hardly any hair, but 100% love on 4 legs. He was incredible & lived 23 years. I miss him every single day. ❤️
My dachshund also hates the rain
I have a toy poodle who hates the rain. I pick her up and carry her out while I'm holding an umbrella. I keep telling her we are not going in until she goes. After her getting really wet many times she now knows if she goes very quickly once she gets inside I'll towell her off and give her a treat.
We had a Dachshund/Chihuahua mix and we adopted her as a puppy in 1974. I was 12. She was sweet tempered and very loving. We had her until she was 17 when we had to put her to sleep. She had short black hair and beautiful brown eyes.
Interesting. I never noticed that about rain. I know one of ours didn't like being out in the cold unlike a couple terrier mix that we got later who loved the cold.
Yes, mine did the same thing. He stuck his head out the doggie door and it was raining, so he ran all the way into the dining room and peed on the floor!
Anyone reading this who is considering getting a dachshund I can 100% confirm everything in this video. And like she said the pros absolutely outweigh the cons. They are the sweetest most lovable dogs. I have one and she is my best friend! They are so loyal and very protective of their mamas/dadas. If someone comes to your door they are gonna go crazy barking until they know that they aren’t going to hurt you. I can’t say enough about how much I would recommend getting one if you want a mini best friend. ❤️
Dachshund owner here. I can definitely confirm that everything in this video is pretty spot on. I love my dachshund so much that none of the cons even matter though. BEST dog I've ever had. My dachshund wasn't hard to train at all but she is VERY stubborn when she doesn't want to do something. I kinda like that about her though. She get it from her mama LOL
I've had 3 dachshunds in my lifetime, and my last one lived for 16.5 years. Everything you said was spot on.

Love Dachshunds! The love of my life Digby passed five yrs. ago. Lost Schroeder to cancer 6 months ago, he was 15. Picking up our new girl next Friday, she is going to be Poppy! Love them all so much.❤️
If I can give any dachshund owner the most crucial advice it would be to PROTECT THEIR BACKS. Neither of my pups even knew how to go down stairs. They were carried up stairs as well. I tried to prevent jumping off of furniture as much as possible. It was a back injury that ended my precious boys life after nearly 16 years. It’s devastating. Protect their backs. This also means WATCH THEIR WEIGHT! Dachshunds are one of the breeds that will literally eat themselves to death. They are notorious beggars. No people food! Protect the back!!!
YES with the cutting of stuffed toys. Napkins are so fun to tear up! 😂 NYLABONES are a major NO NO. Their teeth will break. Kong’s are best. Get a toothbrush and brush their teeth! Tartar and dental issues are a big issue with this breed.
Oh and since doxies think they are people please be aware that your bed is no longer yours. Aside from 1/16th of the mattress!
They are wonderful dogs. Remember that they are not golden retrievers. They don’t live to obey. If they happen to obey its bc they wanted to. Not bc YOU wanted them to. Once you have that straight it’s all good! Just as an aside...standard dachshunds can be up to 30 pounds. (My boy was 25 pounds. Not fat. Just a big boy) They are a robust hunting hound. A lot of folks don’t know that the minis are not the breed standard size. And they were never meant to be purse sized!!!! Teacup dachshunds are not a thing. If you are being sold one it’s not likely to be healthy. Bad breeding is an issue with doxies. Dapples in particular. The double dapple pattern is extremely dangerous and any breeder creating that pattern is not a good person and does not care about the health of the breed. Not to grandstand but its important that people know this.

KC, I totally agree with everything you said! Protect their little backs. We have ramps all over her house, any place that she want to be up on, she can safely. There are many dog ramps out on the market for sale, but most of them are very expensive. Find someone that can build one or two or three. Who cares what they look like in your house, you are protecting your precious puppy! We have extra large windowsills at our front window and a ramp that goes up so she can sit there and bark at whoever comes down the street. I have a nice soft blanket in the windowsill for her to lay down and have a good time. I also have another one that goes up to our very high bed because like you said it’s not your bed anymore and I have a very small space to sleep in. But if she doesn’t come to bed right away I have to go find out where she is and bring her to bed. If she wants to stay she does, If she doesn’t she’ll go off and come back when she wants to. I also have another one that goes up onto our sofa. One of them was purchased the others were built by a friend. There are many people out there that are handy and can build these things and don’t charge an arm and a leg. Above all protect their little backs. And you will have unlimited love and devotion from your precious little dachshund!
I agree with everything you said right here. I had no idea dapples were a dangerous type due to breeding, thank you! And yeah, their backs are very injury-prone, my poor baby Maia passed on at the beginning of January due to a back injury and I was devastated. The new dachshund puppy we got loves to cuddle with me and pretty much nobody else!
U got that 1000% Correct!! They will Literally eat themselves to explosion!!! Its the Only breed I've owned that LOVES LOVES eating. They are SOOOO CUTE when they beg too. So much SO that u would think they were being neglected & hadn't eaten in a week after just eating dinner. Lol. No Joke!
My sister dog sits for a family who is OBSESSED with dachshunds. Tucker, the dachshund has a younger sister named Camper who is a short hair pointer. We’ve taken him on so many trips. The beach, mountains, etc. Tucker has never been that bad with barking and isn’t that stubborn potty training was fairly easy, when he needs to go he runs to the door and we let him out. He is my little baby ♡︎. Edit: Tucker sadly passed away a few weeks ago. His family isn’t doing will and nor is camper. R.I.P my best bud.

Got my dachshund 5 years ago. I never thought I could love a dog as much as I loved her. Please like she said be careful of their backs. My emmie used a ramp for everything. She only went up the steps never down. She was very easy to house train to go on pee pads, so I never had to worry about getting up at night and take her out. She always went on her own. I just had to put her down a week ago due to a back injury going up her ramp. She lost her footing and slipped off the ramp and her disc ruptured. She made it through the surgery but unfortunately a week later she developed an infection near the injury and became paralyzed from her neck down. She was only 5 years old. The love we had for her and she had for us was unconditional. The pros are much of a reward that the cons never bothered us at all. Costly, yes. But I would do it all over again. The most loyal animal I ever had.

I found my mini dax relatively easy to house train - I put the work in - took her out every hour, waited until she went, praised her when she went and ignored the accidents inside (v important) and she was house trained relatively quickly. I also housetrained my second five year old rescue dachshund using this method who was kept outside all her life. But yes they are barkers!
Yes my dachshund was crate trained from a young age and no accidents in the crate and very rarely an accident in the house unless he got scared
My Daschund is 12 years old now and slowing down. Crazy little guy loves snow. He runs through the snow as fast as he can and just about disappears under it.
I've had a mini dachshund for 10 months and she just turned 1 yesterday! She is very protective, Stubborn, she sleeps a lot through the day, HATES THE RAIN! She's a good walking dog, she is usually calm, loves to play and she loves to give you kisses😊 Dachsaunds are very good family dogs and are extremely adorable!!!🐶

I had two shaded red long-haired dachshunds growing up, and I miss them dearly. They were terribly yappy, but so affectionate and loyal.
I've had my dachshund, Fido, for 7 years. And even though the "loyal" aspect of them can be great, in my case it hasn't been that way. My dad got him for me when I was 8 years old just before my parents got a divorce, he was just a puppy at that time, so he instantly took my dad as "the alpha". I was already going through way too much and Fido would use any opportunity he had to rip my things apart which made me lock him out of my room, and my mom wasn't very keen on him either at the time since he just reminded her of my dad. This all lead to Fido not getting attached to me, but to my dad, who lives in a different city. I feel guilty about it constantly and I wish I could've done things differently. I have tried to grow closer to him for years, but he still really only has eyes for my dad, but I think he still loves me. He melts every time he sees my dad, but only ever gets really excited to see me when I've been gone for a few days. He also hates going on walks, so my grandpa and I have to basically wait until HE wants to go out, which isn't very convinient, and he has become quite territorial over me, and also hates baths. But when my dad comes over, his personality completely changes, he just kind of melts over him. I'm currently writing this while sitting on the floor at 1am with my laying on a pile of my plushies as he ripped apart his last bed and due to corona we haven't gotten him a new one. So please, If you get a dachshund, be sure to love them as much as you can since the moment you meet them, don't make the same mistakes as I did.
Agree totally with everything Holly says - had two doxies so far and both met every personality trait she lists. The loyalty (following me from room to room... sitting at my feet in the bathroom even) is the most endearing trait. How can you not love a dog who loves you back so hard? The house-training was a pain - but eventually my last doxie would come to me and lick my hand when she needed to go out. She gave me about 2 minutes warning and if I didn't take her out, I was cleanig the floor.
your assessment of the pros and cons of the Dachshund were spot on. Like you I learned from personal experience. My favorite bob tail (long story) weeny dog would agree. Rosie is so sweet so loyal and so loving I don't know how I ever got along without her. 🙂
I’ve had this bread my entire life and I’m 52. This is the first time I’ve ever had more than one at a time and I highly recommend it. They act like siblings . Simply perfect!

I have a male miniature long hair dachshund. Koda , he’s almost 2 years old and luckily he barely ever barks only when someone rings the door bell
Over many years, we have had 6. Never more than 2 at a time. Cant imagine being without a Doxie (or 2). Every single experience is so delightful I cant fully describe it in words. I would suggest anyone considering one (or 2) look into finding a Doxie adoption network. Our last 3 came from Dachshund Rescue in Spokane WA. Dont overlook a senior (or 2). The last 3 we have had came from the rescue. I tear up just remembering the ones we lost as they are so far beyond cute and into world class I cant begin to adequately describe what you will encounter with the breed. Enjoyed the video!

I inherited a mini when a friend died. Daisy was nice, and even got along with Kuini, my Shar-Pei mix. The vets asst. wanted to adopt her, so I let her go. She was a sweetie and had the head tilt down too.

Great overview of the pros and cons of dachshunds! As a dachshund owner of 16.5 years, I would say that IVDD is something to be very concerned about and you'll want to implement those risk mitigating activities as soon as possible. Over the course of 16.5 years, Mr. Wiggles, my smooth dachshund, had both cervical neck and thoracic ruptures (IVDD) at different times, gall bladder removal, cancer, and liver disease. He was a hearty individual that always seemed to bounce back quickly after each episode. If you don't have a special medical fund, I would STRONGLY SUGGEST you obtain pet insurance at an early age. In my case, i did not have pet insurance and spent over $48,000 on his critical medical care (not the routine items) over his lifetime, but for all the love I received from this little guy, it was priceless!
I had 1 that was diagnosed with IVDD and spent $6000 on the surgery. I will always from now on get my dachshunds pet insurance.
Great video!! So important to stress the need for ramps and spine protection. We have 2. 11 year old. They both still pee when they are mad! Love, love, love them!!
I've had 5 Dachshunds. I absolutely love them. My last Dachshund lived to be 20 and only died by an accident. They are very loving and affectionate dogs. They are extremely protective. They will attack anyone who even raises their voice to you. Once I had an argument with someone on the phone and slammed the phone down. My Dachshunds attacked the phone. These dogs are very sensitive to your mood and love you dearly. They travel great and love to go to small dog park and hikes. They are total clowns who will keep you entertained. Housebreaking was quite a chore. I finally just tiled almost my entire house . They never messed in the bedroom because they thought of the bedroom as their den. It was a years long struggle but I finally got them to think of the entire house as their den. Take it from me --- if you want a Dachshund --- just tile your whole house. They are worth it though.
I've had doxies since I was very young and yes they do bark alot. My 2 girls let us know as soon someone is on our property and living in the country I really love that about them. Nothing moves without them letting us know about it. I really love the short haired breed because of the ease of caring for their coat. We had 3 black and tan girls but one passed away 2 years ago and we miss her so much. They bring us such joy

This video is so relatable...it was like describing my dachshund.
Absolutely gorgeous long haired mini dachshund. I have a 12 yo male long haired mini and to this day he likes to water the sofa legs, table legs or anything left on the floor. NOT always now, but they are difficult to train. As for the barking and, destructive behavior, I was lucky Milo grew out of that. I love this breed and can't imagine my life without a doxie to love me.

Love this video! The potty training struggles are no joke. It took my female dachshund 6 months and my male 9 months to be 95% potty trained...they still have accidents every once in a while. 💜 🐶

Dachshunds generally live a long life. I had 3 that lived to be 16 & 17 years old. They can be very protective. I've heard of some that have protected their families from snakes or even bears.
Yes all of mine have lived to be between 17-19 years. I have my last 2 litter sisters who are 5. I'm 62, had mini dachshunds all my like (3 sets of two each time) and couldn't imagine my like without my fur babies....

I liked your video. I have owned 5 dachshunds and they are the best. I got my first one as a puppy and he destroyed the carpet. We put in wood floors and problem was solved. This same guy had a $3,500 back surgery and had a complete recovery. I just adopted a 7 year old female and a 9 year old male. I have had the four days and they get along great with my 11 year old dachshund male. GREAT BREED!

@@HollyObee Stella is a beauty and I wish her a long health life with you... However, a word of caution, my adorable mini-dach died from her shots (long story, very obvious, won't go into details). There are MANY ill manifestations/side effects from too many shots, given too close together or unnecessarily without any scientific justification. One of them is there contribution to soaring rates of cancer in dogs. I strongly suggest watching 'The Truth About Pet Cancer' - 6 part series that deals tackles this issue in episode 3. Good luck.
I've had my dog for 3 years. She is every pro that you have said very very little cons. She doesn't bark barely at all and like you said only when something's not where it's supposed to be or someone's, not where it's supposed to be. I love her. She's fantastic little companion and she's my buddy 😍😘 mine is a long-haired dapple dachshund chocolate

Spot on! I’ve got 2 & this is sound advice. iDVD is largely an inherited condition,so do your research when buying to check if it’s in your puppies breeding line, if possible. They are the best!💗
I had a little miniature weenie dog named Maizy, she was very talkative and very energetic. We came home one day and she had a dislocated disk in her back. We took her to the vet, we did everything but we couldn't save her. We are buying a 2 week old purebred spotted weenie dog named Eugene. This really helps freshen my mind up! Thank you.
Best dog ever!! I got lost on hike back to my car, had to walk 3 additional miles and my mini stayed with me the whole time. She would not let me pick her up and carry her. They are up for anything. Tough, loyal little dogs!
We are now with our 3rd & 4th dachshunds. Everything you said is really true and yes, the pros have far outweighed the cons - including having to go through the cost and pain of IVDD with our Mr. Freckles. We sought out our first 3 via a breeder or private pet shop, expensive but not terrible. Our last, Parker, we rescued from a dachshund rescue group here in South Florida - we thought we wanted another long haired white / red piebald, similar to Mr. Freckles, but we ended up with a black and tan longhair and he is amazing. So, forget the cons - most can be trained out, either from you or them, we are now retired and have found our two are amazing travel companions and welcomed wherever we go.

I am brand new to your channel and happy to have found you. I have been thinking about getting a miniature longhaired dachshund for about two years. I believe a responsible owner should make sure that their fur baby gets the best food, can afford vet bills, expected and unexpected. I couldn't then. Now, I have a much better job and can afford one, but I am working long hours. This is temporary. Once, things slow down, I will be getting a fur baby! I am seriously beginning to fully research the breed. Looking forward to watching more of your videos! 🐶

I love my little dachshund so much. Hes got such a big personality!! I'm in college and I wish I could take him with me. I'm his person and hes bonded to me, but I have 2 jobs and school so there is no way I'd be able to take care of him the way I want. I miss him so much and he is one of the things I look the most forward to seeing when I go home
Be careful not to overfeed. They are food driven and will eat as much as you give them. They love people food, cat food, pretty much anything that might resemble food...
my dachshund just pulled an avocado skin out of the trash and ate some of it while I was in a Zoom meeting. She always scarfs up random food off the ground or from the trash. It is so scary
I love a highly food-motivated dog - they are so easy to train! I set aside part of my dachshunds’ meals and use it as training treats/rewards.
Mines have eaten mice, snakes, bugs, lizards, almost anything.
@@isaactristan6427 Mine love the June bugs. Those big buzzing ones that leave their skeletons stuck to stuff outside. Also great mousers. Anything that crawl in the house is in jeopardy, lol.

I’ve had 6 altogether two at a time all lived to about 10yrs old your spot on with stubborn behaviour but they are clever good video spot on!

I have a dapple dachshund named Roxie (same dog on my profile pic) and she has the best personality, and always stays by my side, Dachsunds are defiantly my favorite dog breed! She does bark when people knock on the door and come in but when she realizes its someone she knows, or even people she dont know, she still goes near them and always gets away with a belly rub from them in the process 😆
I’ve had dachshunds for over 30 years, always had min long haired sisters. My current ones are 5 years old. Could not imagine my life without them ❤️
My 11 year old dachshund did get a neck injury at the age of 9. The vet told me to put his bowl up higher, so he doesn't have to bend his head low to eat. Now I sit his bowl on a box and he hasn't had anymore issues.

A PLUS!!!! Great job, Holly. I've owned longhaired dachshunds since 1972, along with other breeds, but these are my top faves. Grew up with a smoothie (short haired) doxie, loved them for all the reasons you listed, yet wanted the fur of an Irish Setter! Found out longhairs existed, have had at least one at all times for the rest of my life! They also have long lives, another big pro. They live to 14/15 years, some longer, like my little Polly who is 16 1/2 and doing great! The cons you listed are all true, and yet not really cons if you appreciate the alarm of a bark, pick them up to stop them when a visitor arrives. They are tough and strong. Polly is built like a tiny tank and has never had back issues because I have always carried her with a hand under her rump, never pick her up without that extra support, and taught her early on to never use stairs or jump on furniture. We use ramps in the house for bed and sofa, and she has no problem waiting at the top of my outdoor stairs to my apartment when I go down...it's amazing how well she minds me. They are very smart and understand urgency in a voice. When I explained she could never use those stairs, she just complied, no problem. They want to please!!!! House-training is helped immensely by the installation of a doggie door! BIG plus!! They will also learn by the example of their mother or other older dog in the house. BEST DAMN BREED AROUND!! Loved this video!!!

Dachshunds are diggers, barkers and chewers. Instinctively bred to do a job. You also covered the long back not doing well with jumping down which puts pressure on their disks with the weight being on the front of the dog. The ribbing and keel is very important that it goes back far enough to support the length of its back and that the depth of chest is way down with a wrap around front. AKC describes the perfect dachshund and that is so that the body doesn’t have back problems.

We have 3 daschunds..they are all over 10 years old... . they are my babies/best friends/my children....... they are LOYAL... They pretty much own US... please protect their BACKS!!!!!. so fragile... ❤❤❤❤❤🐕🐕🐕

My Dachshund "Hershey" is 13. We've had him since he was 6 months old. He has been great and mainly barks at anything that is done at the front door- ring, knock or a chair moves on the front porch he hears it. We don't let him climb stairs at all. He has had back issues twice, but a trip to vet and medication the pain goes away in a day or so. We have pet insurance for him fro PetsMart and it around $55 a month. It started at like $35 dollars a month and rose over the years. The plan is great for yearly checks and covers any back issues that may arise.

Ive had dachshunds all my life, my parents had a little dachshund couple that they’d owned since they were puppies and before I was born. Then after they passed away, we adopted another middle aged dachshund. They are prone to bad dental health and are very stubborn. You also do really have to keep in mind their spine compared to other breeds. carrying them a certain way is important. My dog personally does not bark very much, only for a minute when someone’s at the door and they do get very attached to people. They’re a great breed to have around kids. My dog has never bit anybody, even when kids were grabbing him all over. So if you’re thinking of adopting a dachshund, do some research first, I would definitely recommend this breed for all ages and people in general.
I owned a dachshund for 14 years. She rarely barked, but she was mischievous, especially with the cat.
There is also a difference in temperament for short/long/wire hair varieties because of the different breeds used to create them :)

My doxie rarely barks, but is a whiner. Verryyy stubborn and yes, destructive. Haha. But he has a veryyyyy high energyyy. Always love to play fetch even if i am working (wfh) but i love him so dearly. He is my everything. ♥️

My doxi will be 13 this year. I got Tink at 2 weeks old. None of these apply. Doesn't bark, Doesn't dig, doesn't tear things up, obeys commands in English and German. Bonds and loved others quickly. He is a velcro dog. Training from experts from puppyhood is the key.
Yes to all of these. Mine has been really easy to toilet train but I worked really hard in the first couple of months of having him and it really paid off. I’ve got a short haired which are known for being wary of stranger and he really won’t tolerate people he doesn’t know. Lockdown has really impacted our ability to socialise him so this is going to take a lot of training
I had some doubts at first, but this cleared a bunch a f stuff up. Now I am happy with my long haired Docsond.

I must have gotten lucky because we rescued an older female Doxy and she’s the most amazingly well behaved dog we have ever had. She’s never had an accident in our home nor does she excessively bark. She does however sleep all day and hog our bed 🥰

My dachy just peed all the way up my stairs. On.Every.Step. 20 steps. Luckily, my stairs are not carpeted. He did it because he was mad that I didn’t take him out to “play” badminton. He loves chasing the birdie/shuttle.

@@slogan20018 Well after 35 years of doxie ownership, let's say I never had one that held a grudge. Maybe yours were unique. Grudges are human emotions, not dog emotions, IMO.
