    I approve of side by side comparisons. This is a very useful thing for models where different manufacturers make make the same type.

    Hi Jenny
    I am glad you said that there is room for both Terriers. The price difference is not small and so I would expect the better model from Rails/Dapol.
    However I do feel you have concentrated on the pros of the Rails and deficits of the Hornby versions.
    The Sam’s Trains comparative review showed both good and bad points in both models but the Rails model’s badly distorted running plate is unforgivable and was rightly brought to our attention. forgive me but from this video even yours does not appear true and I feel you should check with a straight edge. I also feel that the brake rods are more correctly depicted on the Hornby model as are the wheel spokes.
    The one thing neither of you have mentioned is the ridiculously small hole in the funnel cap which is most certainly not correct.

      I got so fed up with people quoting Sam’s review to me as if because if he had a bent one they were all bent that I put a steel ruler along the Rails Brighton. It is 100% straight.

  • @flyingtardisOfficial
    @flyingtardisOfficial Před 3 lety +6

    i mean, with the hornby one at least you can fix said detail issues somewhat as they are on parts whereby your not ruining the fine lining, try doing that on the rails one and you are more at risk of damaging the lining, which makes the "detail difference" (which lets face it is code for issues) super minor, whereas the rails one you'd need to be one of the best modellers going to fix its issues (well the main issue thats the cab anyway) so they look un-noticeable, the hornby ones just needs a touch of filler, paint from B&Q and some transfers, unlike multiple shades of paint on top of very fine transfers which would be piddly to get on, coal load and prefferably a none-dapol mechanism as i'm sorry but i trust those about as much as i can throw a badger to scotland.
    i understand the whole thing about pedestals and all that but looking at the practicality of them, the hornby one is better, and that's without my bias to the whole "Pedigree" bullshit rails did, but also, i personally like models that aren't perfect and may need extra things adding, it gives me a small challenge to work out the best way of how to sort it, i'm honestly not ready for the in depth work i'd need to do on the rails one to have it up to scratch, its not worth my time, especially as its not stepney in IEG A1X form, and thats the thing, the hornby one is better for those wanting to do a quick name and number change or a conversion from A1 to A1X, whereas the rails one just seems to be "add coal and leave our PEDIGREE model alone" and that for me and a lot of other modellers takes the fun out of it, perfection does not equate to either model in this instance, but hornby (at least to me) is the better option.

    I watched the video. I have hornby "Merton" and the "Brighton" . From rails I have the GWR one. I like both at the price point they come at. I would not expects quite as much from the Hornby ones. My rails one ran very well straight out of the box. I did check it very carefully after watching Sam's video. Is that guy unlucky or what? With the trend to add additional detail packs into locos I really think Rails/Dapol missed a trick by not putting an optional coal fill blanking plate. Yes I can make one myself but...................And yes I will get over it. Lol

    Jenny, have you seen Sam's review of the "Boxhill" Terrier. It was very badly put together as it had so many problems. How and why would a metal running plate bow as much as that. I believe that is why there are so many other problems with parts just not fitting together. I love the colours of the different liveries, but the LNER never had any to my knowledge. Martin. The hornby model has correct frames with holes however. The dapol one has no frame holes Its also stupid that the rails model has no coal load. You can say whatever you want but a steam locomotive being sold without coal load is just cheap.

    Great comparison Jenny, as always. Mine arrived on Friday, and I completely agree the detailing on the Rails/dapol one is vastly superior. After seeing your review I was really pleased Id chosen the Rails example. Then I put it on the track and sadly mine had serious running issues so had to go back for replacement, hopefully the second one will be better. Thank you for doing these videos

    Hi Jenny, nice comparative review of the two Terriers. I agree both models have plus and minus points. I received my Rails W C & P Terrier on the weekend, though not having a Hornby model, I am impressed with the finish and details of the Rails model. It came dcc fitted and straight out of the box it ran smoothly. It took a rake of 3 coaches up my branch line incline with no slippage. So the Rails model gets 👍👍up from me.

    A definitive review might mention the obvious orange peel paintwork on the Rails model (it’s a fault caused by bad spray painting technique), the few spots of white paint on the running board, and the fact that the edge of the running board of the Rails model is quite rough. My W9 Fishbourne also exhibits these issues. The horizontal run of rivets on the rear of the cab of the Hornby is typical of the two Terriers on the Isle of Wight, BTW. Both makers’ models have flaws or differences from the prototypes, some of which are more obvious in the different liveries.

    Thanks for the comparison video Jenny.
    I decided early on to buy the Hornby model, the Rails version is spoilt by the turned brass chimney cap.
    Looks terrible because it's slightly smaller diameter than the lower chimney stack, looks like its been squeezed into cap.
    Also on inside it tapers to narrow bore where as Hornby has a same diameter bore which is correct.
    Having sung the praises for Hornby l purchased an early version BR 32636 which was a mistake because it was of a batch where the sprung pickups were not springy enough to stay in proper contact with wheel rim, adjust them and they soon lost contact with wheel again.
    Upshot was l sold it to a dealer who told me they had received others with same problem, l don't have a Terrier in my fleet now!

  • @Impressionist55
    @Impressionist55 Před 3 lety +4

    I´m sorry Jenny, but it is very sad to see a very biased comparison like this one from you. Almost all of the faults with the Hornby model are getting mentioned, whilst the various faults with the Rails model are getting ignored. And there are plenty of faults on both models. You are then going on trying to "rescue" the Hornby model by saying it is cheaper, but therefore a lower quality model. Something which is simply not true. Im very sorry I have to say this, but all in all your video feels more like an advert for the rails model than a fair comparison.
    I would call myself a Terrier enthusiast and have therefore pursued the development of both models very carefully and was also in contact with multiple people regarding some issues on both models. I can´t mention everything you have left out from the video. But here are only four points the rails model falls short: Firstly please take a look in between the tanks. Whilst the Hornby model has a proper round boiler all the way to the fire box, the lower half of the boiler on the Rails model ends abruptly were the tanks begin with a flat wall. Secondly, to the roof. Besides the very prominent line you mentioned in the video, Rails also captured the shape of the roof very poorly, whilst the Hornby model is much closer to the real one. Not present on Brighton of course, but on various other version, the two different types of coal rails/bunker extensions. Whilst Hornby have tooled them both correctly, Rails did a very poorly job on them: The KESR coal rails are much to thin with to wide gaps in between the different rows, in 1:1 scale they would not even be able to properly hold coal in. The A1X bunker extension suffers from a similar problem, the details are much to thin and overall it is vastly underscale. The exact opposite problem is present with the brake rigging. Rails attempt is very crude. The rods a way to thick and lacking any detail. Hornby on the other hand have modeled them at the correct scale and even have the tinniest of proper holes in them at the proper position.
    Both models have their drawbacks and everybody has to decide for themselves which models suits their personal needs better. But it is definitely not true, to say the Hornby model is a lower spec model. It actually captures the overall proportions much better and still manages to be cheaper (not even including the retailer discount you can get with the Hornby model but obviously not with the rails one).
