I'm American and even I'm looking forward to this. Hardwicke is one of the most beautiful locomotives. I've always been surprised that there aren't more models of pre-grouping locomotives available in the UK, since there are so many interesting prototypes.

I'm not a OO modeller, nor am I a British outline modeller, but the production standards for this video are brilliant. Thank you. I've got a couple of the Bachmann On30 0-4-0 gas mechanicals, which are rubbish (and now off the market - no wonder). But I've just taken delivery of the Bachmann On30 Whitcombe bogie Diesel, and it is fabulous. So smooooooth at all speeds, crawls beautifully.

They look to be very accurate in paint and details 'Novelty'was one of only 4 to get full red LMS livery, 'Talavera' is in final 1931condition one of two to get ross pops, and 'Lucknow'looks to be in as built 5/1891 condition it never made it to the LMS being withdrawn 3/1919,but i have to agree they are very expensive,Just bought hornby Queen Maude,£156 and its superb I think Hornbys Best Yet,makes you think.

Lazy Turtle Sadly I'm finding this with more and more Bachmann products, whilst I don't question the quality of the products I don't understand their pricing structure. To add some perspective I have within the last three months bought a brand new DCC fitted Hornby S15 for £129, admittedly the loco itself was on special offer but even if I'd paid full retail it would only have cost about £150.

Lets turn our attention to retailers for a moment when looking at pricing policy. A well known retailer in the south of England had a sale in August when they offered a Bachmann LNER steam Locomotive, RRP was 1 penny under £180 for 1 penny under £60. Know that's a hell of a mark up in my view, apart from supermarkets, no one sells at a loss. Makes you wonder how much discount retailers get from manufacturers.
Oh!, and yes I bought this model, it would have been rude not to 😆.

    • @philnewstead5388
      @philnewstead5388 Před 3 lety +2

John Angus Dad had a 50% share in a model shop many years ago (1970 to about 1985) and the mark up then was usually 30% but the buying structure was different as the smaller model shops had to buy from a wholesaler who bought direct from the manufacturer and I seem to remember we were limited to the amount of discount we could give, the biggest model shop back then was Beatties. I take your point though when people lake Hattons and Rails can offer anything up to £25 off a new release, obviously they rely heavily on the volume of sales for their profit but back when dad had his shop offering a discount on a new release even by Beatties was unheard of.

Well considering that r-t-r models these days have to have either a currently preserved or new build/replica being made, the only locos of LNWR build preserved being a Coal Tank, Super D, a single 2-2-2 (Cornwall), and a Jumbo with a new build for a Bloomer and George the 5th, the only other loco they could do is a post-WW1 version of the ROD version of the GCR 8K, that's why there haven't been many LNWR locos made for a while.

So glad they do not limit themselves to the common repeated UK advice of just making preserved examples or models of models made 1:1 scale.
In other countries this advice is less widespread.
However it does require more knowledgeable and capable design skills.
Also this capability of research avoids duplicating some of the non typical aberrations that are just present on the preserved example. A trap for the scan then CAD approach common recently.

@@williambabcoke248 Strongly agree, and these little engines COULD be fabulous but I am as yet not convinced. Bachmann can produce strong, "middle-of-the-road +" quality models when it wants to, but its "higher-end" models are often lacking in quality and bountiful in cost. It's such a shame because when you look at companies like Roco or Liliput who are producing fabulous models with insane levels of detail(and have been for some time now!), the price is often in-line or sometimes even cheaper than these "nicer" Bachmann (or even other company's) models. I grew up with Bachmann in the 90's here in the states and I just wish I could get excited about their offerings nowadays, but increasingly I am woefully underwhelmed by the cost/quality.

If Bachmann can make the process easy then that's fine but the main issue is having the tryers in the first place which is just going to increase the cost and trying to manufacture an ''easy way'' to change the wheelset is just going to further increase the price. I am of course not an expert in making model locomotives but considering the model is going to be largely diecast then I don't see the need for traction tyres. @Tom-Lahaye Před 3 lety

A very nice model, but 220 quid is a very stiff price.
Prices for new Bachmann models are creeping up to Fleischmann levels, but the quality is not up to that same level yet.
Probably not so much in the detail and accuracy , which seem very good, but running quality (not really a smooth start from standstill in the video), features like lighting and smoke, crispness of detail and paintwork and sturdiness is still not comparable with brands like Fleischmann and Roco.
A good point however is leaving the choice to fit a wheelset with traction tyres or a plain one to the customer, and that's something the continental brands still don't do, you have to live with traction tyres or order plain wheelsets as spares at cost.

I would like to see Locomotion Models produce the Stanier 3 cylinder 4MT and LTSR Class 79 via Hornby next year because since I am considering doing a layout of Southend On Sea and Southend East in the days of the LMS in the 1930s in 00 Gauge and since I am an admirer of former Love Island contestant Megan Barton-Hanson myself I would have the layout built for her to remember me by.

Well, I just pre-ordered one from Rails today. We tried calling Locomotion at Shildon, but unfortunately, they weren't open as the shop in the museum was closed. I wanted to get the preserved example, but I could only get the one in the same livery but with a different number and name. :'( Still, better than nothing at all.
