    This video explains how I diagnosed that I needed to replace the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) control module in my 2011 Jeep Wrangler JKU. It shows how I not only had the ABS and Traction Control instrument panel lights but also the red BRAKE light. Getting just the ABS and Traction Control lights is common when you have a wheel speed sensor fault. The BRAKE light isn’t common and, ultimately, pointed me to the ABS control module.
    The video then shows some overviews of how you replace the control module. It’s a pretty easy task to do yourself and save some money over the dealership. The part is cheaper than from the dealer and you don’t need to pay dealer labor. You’ll still need to go to the dealer so they can flash/update the new control module to match your Jeep since they are VIN-matched. Total cost at the dealer for the flash was $165 in a May 2020.
    When you get your part, contact the parts supplier and make sure you get the proper part for your VIN.
    The part that I needed was part number 68089120AB, “Anti-Lock Brake System Module.”
    Part 68089121AB, “Anti-Lock Brake System Module,’ will ALSO work in my 2011 JKU but would not work for my VIN. Unhappily, the part I needed was about twice the cost of the other part.
    I got my part from dodgeparts.com:

    Seems our jeeps are alike. Not only did I watch your video on the power steering replacement, but I am also dealing with ABS issues too. It is showing c102b, which is the abs circuit. I have already replaced the right rear sensor and cleaned the area the sensor faces. Still getting the U1418 code too.

    • @CarbonsDIYGarage
      @CarbonsDIYGarage  Před 3 lety +2

      Oh man, it seems like ABS related issues are some of the worst! If you end up buying a new control module, make sure you confirm that you get the right part number for your VIN. One thing that I don't think I covered well in the video is that you can't get the dealer to flash the module in advance - they do it through the ODB2 port so it's got to be installed in the vehicle first.
      Good luck!

    Thank you for the video it was informative. I could not figure out what was wrong with my jeep but I suspected my ABS module after watching this video and reading the comments. If anyone is driving and it feels like all of a sudden you’re pulling a 5000 pound trailer and then it goes away when you let off and it does it multiple times then the “brake” light comes on and it drives fine its this issue going out. I have a 2008 JKU that I only drive around town and I’m running 40 inch tires. It is mainly an off-road rig so instead of shelling out the $500+ I pulled the fuse J7 for the ABS Valve. It is driving fine and not acting erratically with no CEL but the brake light does come on. If you pull J6 you get a CEL and lose your speedometer. It seems fine so far so Im gonna leave it like this. My ABS and ESP/BAS light has been on for like 8 years from a broken wheel speed sensor. I could care less I just want it to drive and not drive for me. Its gonna all be deleted soon when I drop in a 4bt now that I got out of Commie Colorado. Hope this helps!

    Hey Ed! I'm one of the seniors at H's CAP squadron. I have to do something similar to my Tahoe. Unfortunately mine is mounted under the truck, on top of the frame. I read on mine that the vast majority of the failures is due to some of the major solder terminals losing contact, so I'm going to try to re-flow those joints and see if that fixes it before shelling out the couple-hundred for a new one.

    Screws were a MAJOR pain. Access through the wheel well (removed fender liner). Also helps push from below on the socket/pins while using a prybar to lift as well. Drilled holes in the plastic case (over wheel) to get strait access to the lower bolts on ABS computer. ONE WAS FROZEN after all other options, used a grinder from underneath to cut the bolt. THEN, everything else went smooth. Replacing the ABS computer and bolts. $150 for ABS unit from AAA Auto Salvage (used only the computer). Still need to get ABS flashed I would suppose...

    Before anybody goes replacing an expensive module like this, they need to check to make sure the GROUNDS are all good and clean from the grounding bolt on the driver's
    side fender to the PCU and the ABS module. These ground wires are crimped and NOT soldered and they corrode pretty fast. Check, clean and maybe solder them FIRST...!!!

      I don't really have much insight on this combination. Since you've got a P0573, you've obviously got the check engine light, that you had read and got the P0573. I'm assuming you also have the ABS light? If yes, have you gotten that code read (might need to find an auto shop vs. AutoZone, etc. that have a reader to read it) and see if that helps you track it down? • @CarbonsDIYGarage
      @CarbonsDIYGarage  Před 2 lety +1

      Flashing it means that the dealer connects some sort of programmer tool into your OBDII port and reprograms the new ABS controller with your VIN. That way the Jeep’s computer will talk to/interface with the new controller.
      Replace the part first, then take it to the dealer (I had to make an appointment).

      I think that's what I had when I had a bad wheel sensor - ESP, ABS, and the stability control light. The new one for me that alerted me to it being different was the BRAKE light. Then a lot of googling and trying to replace wheel sensors. When that didn't help, I bit the bullet on the ABS module - I was reluctant because it's much more expensive.
      I wish I could give you a better answer, but I'm not 100% sure if yours is or isn't the ABS module. You could try taking it to a shop that can read ABS codes - that should really tell you the answer.

    • @CarbonsDIYGarage

      Unfortunately, I only know what my experience was, and that was with a 2011 Wrangler with the 3.8L engine. For that part, I don't know if it already had a VIN flashed to it or not when I installed it, but when I contacted the dealer (after I'd installed the new part) and told them what I'd done and that I wanted them to reflash the ABS module to my VIN, they just told me "sure, let's make an appointment."
      Maybe the only thing I can suggest is contacting a couple of different dealers (or go to one and talk to one in person) to see if they really can't do it on parts for the 2015, or if the dealer you contacted just didn't want to.
      It really only took about an hour for them to do the job and it seemed like it was as simple as hooking their computer up to the OBD port and doing "computer magic."
      Sorry I can't help more - once you figure it out, it would be great if you could leave another comment as I'm sure others have the same questions.

      Oh wow, that's crazy! This shouldn't be a part that fails so often that there's such a huge back order. What a pain!

    You can just leave the negative battery off over night and that will be the same as the dealer flashing the computer and clearing the code.

    • @CarbonsDIYGarage
      @CarbonsDIYGarage  Před 8 měsíci

      Leaving the negative battery terminal off for a while will clear the code but I think you still need to update the memory/EEPROM in the module to have the same VIN as your vehicle. Folks can certainly try the battery disconnect first but I'm thinking the ABS malfunction light will come back because the VIN in the module won't match the VIN of the vehicle. But it's a cheap and non-damaging thing to try. Folks should leave a comment if it works!

    I just had this come up on my 2016 Jeep Wrangler. Is it safe to drive till I can get the part and fix it?

    • @CarbonsDIYGarage
      @CarbonsDIYGarage  Před rokem +1

      Since it’s an important safety system, keep in mind all the disclaimers in the description of the video…
      That said, an ABS light/fault should just mean that systems that use the ABS won’t be functional until the issue is resolved. This would be the ABS but possibly also things like stability control and cruise control. The vehicle would still be drivable. I drove mine (2011 JKU) for several weeks before fixing it, just recognizing that I didn’t have functional ABS.
      I hope that helps and good luck; thanks for watching.

      @@CarbonsDIYGarage yes and this is actually the second time there has been a ABS issue. The first time was probably 2017 and it turned out to be a wheel sensor. It would apply the ABS while I was driving! Almost caused an accident.

      @@lisachiatto821 That's super frustrating. Yeah, wheel speed sensors have been my first go-to when I have ABS lights on the Jeep. I don't know if I mentioned it in the video but I did try replacing a couple of sensors before I landed on pulling the trigger to replace the control module.

    Those lights are so annoying. I have had the abs and traction lights for over 3 years. No codes thrown. Changed my clock spring, brake switch and all 4 wheel sensors and it still comes on and off lol
