Pedro Martinez's beef with Mike Piazza covered family honor, a whole lot of money, and camp drama
Vložit
- čas přidán 26. 10. 2018
- Mike Piazza and Pedro Martinez both debuted for the Dodgers in September 1992, and while they didn't stay teammates for all that long, they stayed connected. Just, you know, not in a really friendly way. From Pedro defending his brother Ramon, to Piazza wanting to earn more than Pedro, to a few beanings and a whole lot of jawing in the media, these two Hall of Famers kept the beef alive.
Oh yeah, and then they both wound up playing for the Mets.

Kinda crazy how piazza getting picked was a favor and he ended up in the hof
I bet his dad felt vindicated - trust me, my son is NOT just a rich kid! 'yeah yeah just give me the money and he'll sneak into the minor leagues' 😅
It's also crazy how Piazza getting picked was a favor yet he criticizes Latino players because of their english.
Really he wasn’t even expected to play for the Dodgers, Lasorda was just trying to give him some attention so he could get an offer from a D-I baseball program
MANCHESTER UNITED thanks for letting me know, I will try to stop loving baseball and love a more popular sport.
i love those kind of stories. Just like when Nikola Jokic got drafted in the NBA 2nd round he was sleeping
Still can't forget Piazza's "I'm not gay" conference. lol
The real gay Met was Bobby Valentine, who screwed the owner, players, and fans!
Covfefe Hamberder 😆😆
I'm still not convinced
@@robynbennett793 i hope it doesnt keep you from completing your daily activities 20 yrs later....
@@mayoluck no not at all but trying to find a perspective in which that comment is funny, clever or even more than distantly and barely relevant could hinder a century or more...but at least your still defensive about it...20 years later and well that's funny at least
My favorite Pedro stat combination is that in 2000, he led the AL in K's, and had an 8.88 K/BB ratio, demonstrating the greatest combination of power, nastiness, and control in pitching history. Yet, he still hit 14 batters, 2nd in the AL. From 1999-2000, you know if Pedro hit you, it was no accident.
mrmacross my alltime favorite was when Pedro hit a batter in the arms and the baseball bounced up a few inches to the letters on the uniform and slid back down to his arms as he was walking towards first base.
Varitek was walking behind waiting to see if he would charge the mound and the batter just took the ball and threw back to Pedro on the mound himself real casual like it was nothing getting hit by Pedro.
totally no sold it LOL
i wish i could remember who the batter was
i still remember Jerry Remy laughing at the batter doing that to Pedro
@@shooter7426 I wanna say it was Rodger Clemens that this happened to but I could be misremembering. Was it in 2000 that this happened? or do you remember roughly? I think the Clemens hit happened near the end of the year but I don't remember what month.
Imagine If Pedro Hit Pujols Intentionally Oh Boy Pujols Would Have Pedro By The Throat
Yea, and Martinez got whooped in all of the mound chargings that happened.
Prime Pedro for 6 years and 75 million? Wow, that sounds like such a bargain 20 years later.
you have gerrit cole signing a 9 year 324 million, for a borderline future hall of famer
😂 yeah seriously
Jerweh lets hope Cole can touch Pedro’s greatness
probably won't since they're two different kinds of pitchers
Pedro Sucks (yes I’m a yankees fan)
That wasn't goofy Spanish. Piazza said those words pretty well.
It's because it's a white guy speaking Spanish. Everyone always rags on white people speaking Spanish.
S. Iacomus You know. Not like the whole country of Spain exists.
Towelie You're a towel.
Quiet! SB Nation has to keep the narrative moving. White = bad.
Nope
Ok now do one on Piazza vs Roger Clemens
I think it would be a 30 second video
@@Am-Not-Jarvis there's actually more to it than what was shown in this video
@@Am-Not-Jarvis Well the reason Clemens hated Piazza was because Piazza absolutely owned Clemens. So I'm not really sure what you mean by it would only be 30 seconds
I'll never understand why Clemens was not thrown out of the game when he tossed the bat at Mike Piazza running up the first base line Roid Rage I hope that piece of s*** never gets in the Hall of Fame he's a liar he could have stayed in that 6 game of the 86 World Series he says the manager told him you're out of there all the players who were standing around to this day say Clements wanted out I liked him at the beginning of his career but lost all respect for him by the time he tossed that bat at Mike he could have injured him or that splinted sharp end could have ended Mike's baseball carrier and Mike didn't cry when he didn't get into the Hall of Fame first time he waited got what he deserved as far as the talk that little s*** and stuff like that that's just part of baseball so cut the s*** it goes on everywhere between different players in baseball I used to hate Pedro but have grown to love him he's a funny guy and I like his presents on the MLB Network as far as Mike's father the fat cat getting him in it's sure worked out best offencive catcher in baseball history so what his defense was not the best he did all right

That story is not finished

Moral of the story is that Dodgers management really screwed up in the 1990s. Could've had Piazza and Pedro, they also originally drafted Paul Konerko and Chase Utley if I remember correctly.
jasonfire34 Yess Dodgers front office in the 90’s were the stupidest of all time. And let’s not forget Adrian beltre ether Dodgers let go of 3 HOF, 3 corner stones to build a Championship team in the late 90’s/ early 00’ . I’m still shocked what they did. I would like to think the current dodgers wouldn’t make a mistake like that again, I’m happy we have a young core rn
@@aaronsaladbar97 IIRC, they had 4 ROYs in a row, and couldn't turn it into anything more than one super-brief playoff run before falling apart.
Yes, Konerko started his career with the Dodgers. One thing they did right in the 90s was take a chance on a Japanese player playing in the big leagues. The Dodgers signing Hideo Nomo is the reason for every Japanese player playing in MLB the last 24 years. They also signed the first Korean baseball player the year before (Chan Ho. Park).
In the 1980s, they gave away Sid Fernandez to the Mets, John Franco to the Reds, and Dave Stewart to the Rangers. I also read that the Dodgers would have signed Roger Clemens in 1983. but went for a left-hander after Steve Howe went AWOL.
IMightBeBiased that’s because they traded Martinez. If he was in the rotation with his brother and Nomo and Valdez all at the same they could’ve won pennants and maybe more and later they added Brown and Park. Things just never came together at once
@@imightbebiased9311 they've had two streaks of 4 straight ROYs. First one was 79-82, with Rick Sutcliffe, Steve Howe, Fernando Valenzuela, and Steve Sax, and then, in 92-96, it was Eric Karros, Mike Piazza, Raul Mondesi, Hideo Nomo, and then Todd Hollandsworth. Fun thing about the mid-90's streak, all 5 of them played in Bakersfield, California, my hometown. Granted, Hideo only played 1 game, but stil.
What sucks is that the Mota Piazza fight doesn't exist anywhere on the internet. I remember seeing it live and it was funny because Piazza needed the whole bench to hold him back

Thanks for filling in some blanks for me: didn't know Pedro Martinez had an older brother he teamed with on Dodgers, and didn't know Piazza was developed with them. What I knew of Mike Piazza was an extended post-game interview conducted by Jack Buck early in the catcher's career. I learned he had his own batting cage. Nice video....
Beef between Piazza and Pedro? WOW this is AWESOME!! I am a Mets fan and had NO idea. This video is EXTREMELY well done. Great work!!!
Awesome, two of my favorite MLB legends.
Fantastic!! Love the research. Keep it coming!
Mike Piazza is what happens when the DH wants to play defense
*Visualizes David Ortiz awkwardly fielding ground balls during batting practice of road interleague games.
Kameratyp the guy played in the national league.
dunno about that. piazza did throw out 423 base stealers in his career. also caught no hitters.
Recent metrics suggest he was actually quite good at framing pitches though.
@@joegti10 423 over 1823 attempts isn't impressive. Tony Pena threw out 656 over 1880 attempts and Ivan Rodriguez threw out 661 over 1447 attempts.
What's really interesting is that not only was he bad at throwing out runners, but evidence suggests that his reputation might have caused runners to be more likely to steal against him. Over his career there was an average of 1.12 steal attempts per game. Compare that to, say, Jason Varitek - a catcher who is thought of as average as far as his arm even though the numbers indicate that he was just as bad as Piazza for CS (301 CS in 1293 attempts) but who only saw .87 attempts per game.
Lazy Revolutionary mentions that he might have been good at framing pitches, and while I haven't seen the Catchella data which Baseball Prospectus created, I would observe that he did only allow 356 wild pitches and 102 passed balls over 1629 games, for .27 pitches not caught successfully per game. To compare, Varitek (who has a well-deserved reputation as a framer) allowed only 283 wild pitches and 105 passed balls for a total of .26 pitches not caught successfully per game. Pena is at .35 pitches not caught successfully per game and Rodriguez at .39 pitches not caught successfully per game.
So, was Piazza's arm trash? Yep. Was he bad defensively? Depends what you define as defense. He maybe should've been a first baseman, though.
For a video in the future can you please do the beef history of ty Cobb and honus wagner
Really well done video on a very specific topic. Nice work!
Good episode, thank you.
I still can't believe the Dodgers let Piazza get away.

Beef History: Paul Simon Vs Art Garfunkel
i was in philly when the dodgers came and i watched mike piazza hit a grand slam in the 9th...everybody instantly shot to their feet involuntarily after hearing that crack of the bat echo everywhere....ill never forget that as the best moment i ever experienced at a baseball game...and my uncle was college roommates with the philly fanatic mascot.
I’m one of the biggest Piazza fans there is and his beef w/ Clemens was 10x the beef he had w/ Pedro. I think in the end, Mike and Pedro were cordial teammates and fine w/ each other. As for Clemens, Mike would not give him a hug if he ran into him in the street today. The guy took karate lessons to learn how to fight because of Clemens. For real. That’s where there was beef. And, oh, as a footnote, Piazza handed Clemens his lunch whenever he faced him. His career numbers against him were absurd. Game winning home runs, grand slams, multiple big hits. He owned him.
I remember going to Cooperstown to see piazza induction it was a great experience
Both of these men are legends.
Piazza vs Clemens was the beef I remembered most. That one got pretty insane.
That's because Roger Clemens is 100 percent crazy.

I mean, you can kind of understand why piazza might feel attacked by dominican players given the whole training camp thing and then multiple dominican pitchers hitting him on separate occasions. Whether it was true or not is a different thing, but you can see his perspective.
Also Pedro and Mota had reputations for hitting people and starting fights
Now batting, MIKE PIAZZA!

I seriously think the baseball beefs are the best. It might be that they play with or against their beef partners so many more times than the other sports that there just more opportunities to have confrontations. Plus, fighting is somewhat normal and baseball is probably the most frustrating sport to play that pits opponents against each other (so golf is excluded).
