The Bryce Harper-Hunter Strickland beef went dormant for 3 years, then exploded into a famous brawl

  • Baseball's unwritten rules leave a lot of room for beef. Pitchers have been known to get mad when batters celebrate. Pitchers punish batters for celebrating by throwing baseballs at them. It's a strange, ancient ritual, and it turns out it can take place over a matter of years.
In 2017, San Francisco Giants pitcher Hunter Strickland hit Washington Nationals superstar Bryce Harper with a pitch, igniting a pretty serious brawl. Why? Well, Strickland wouldn't say so at the time, but he was responding to an incident from 3 years prior. Three years! And the incident in question was Harper kiiinda gloating after he hit a couple home runs in a playoff series his team didn't even win.
This is a tale of a long-held grudge; of beef exploding after years of hibernation. It's also a story about starting a fight about which your teammates aren't entirely enthusiastic. Baseball's so weird.

If he wanted to get the most money possible by going to a division rival then fine. I think it's fun to have a rivalry sort of beef, but I've seen people that genuinely hate him and want to wish bad on him, and I wish that would stop. In a vacuum where I look at Bryce in a baseball sense, he was such a hype player that brought so much fun to Nats games. I still have respect for him.

I was standing on top of the right field arcade at AT &T Park when Harper hit that second home run. The ball flew right over my head so high I was flabbergasted that someone could hit a ball so hard and high. In all my outfield experience in Little League and Pony League, I had never come close to seeing anything like that moon shot. I was on top of the arcade and it still went so far over my head I got dizzy trying to track it. I was so lost in tracking the ball into McCovey Cove that I never saw the whole Harper-Strickland interaction.

My opinion of Harper has changed drastically over the past few years. Sure, I'm a diehard Phillies fan but even the season before we signed him, Harper started to grow on me. I used to despise him because he was easy to hate playing for a division rival and being as hyped up as he was entering the league... BUT especially since he's been in Philly, the dude is genuinely a good dude who plays every game as if it's his last. He cares about nothing but winning and has been saying all the right things to win over the fanbase here. If you're not from Philly you really can't understand how misunderstood our fanbase is. We care about our teams and want the players on our teams to care about winning as much as we do and Harper absolutely does and unlike a lot of today's athletes, he's not a phoney.
