The Jose Bautista-Rougned Odor beef featured an iconic bat flip and an equally iconic face punch

  • Baseball at its finest. This beef features two moments so memorable and exciting they were each featured on T-shirts. I’m talking, of course, about Jose Bautista’s bat flip after his ALDS three-run home run, and Rougned Odor’s revenge punch the next season.
Bautista and Odor are both passionate men, with a strong sense of what’s right and what’s wrong on the baseball field. Those senses of right and wrong don’t necessarily line up, but they both believe in justice … which is what lead to some violent beef.
In the aftermath of the bat flip and the punch, both players scrambled to the press to define the other guy as The Bad Guy. Baseball players, coaches, legends, and fans took side and the result was that both guys had to own the role of villain a little bit. This was a reputation-defining beef, whether they wanted it to be or not.

True. Bautista will retire soon knowing full well that he beat Odor in every way, performance, stats, taking a punch like a man, being a better fielder. Odor will get replaced by that one 2B prospect the Rangers have and disappear from history. MLB fans will always remember Bautista's clutch home run and bat flip in a hotly contested game that featured one of the longest innings witnessed.

@@iangallagher4135 Who? Funny, because 3 different teams actually rented Bautista's services less than 2 years ago. People remember Bautista, whether they liked or hated him. It's just he's not playing because nobody wants a 40 year old washed up player past his prime. If Bautista put the numbers he put up in the 2010's earlier in his career, he would've been a HoF candidate. Barely anyone knows about Odor, he's 26 and already is on a downward spiral. The Rangers have an upcoming prospect that is set to replace Odor. If the Rangers don't resign Odor (which would be smart to not resign him), he will likely not be signed by any team making a playoff push. The only team that'd really consider him are the Orioles and Tigers, who kind of need players to fill in the holes before their prospects come up.

The" batflip heard around the world" is the benchmark. It created so much controversy from the old guard but it really opened the doors for that kind of thing. Since then everyone is flipping their bats or doing their thing when they hit a big shot. And this is where the MLB "let the kids play" stemmed from really. I even read one of the mlb.com writers saying if jays had won the world series after that it would have been the MLB logo for decades to come because it was such an iconic moment in baseball.

Fights are for the NHL, showoffs and emotional headcasses are for the NBA, the NFL is filled with pre-madonnas who put themselves above the team, calm clear heads and smart athletes are what we need in baseball not more cocky jackasses

I still get chills watching that home run and bat flip, that’s how I’ll remember Bautista. I remember watching it live and got so hyped, not even a Blu Jays btw.

This whole beef basically boils down to Odor and the Rangers being a bunch of babies who couldn't take losing. The slide wasn't even that bad.

As a Toronto native and casual Jays fan I can say that the bat flip was pretty electric.
Not as cool as Carter winning in '93 or Kahwi's buzzer beater last year... But it was cool. Canada was excited.
