This week’s video is the continuation of a very full travel day! After our stay at the W.H. Lyons Fairgrounds and visiting Sioux Falls (here is that video if you missed it: • IS IT STILL A GOOD OPT... ), we headed off towards Badlands National Park.
On our way, we decided to finally stop at the Dignity of Fire and Sky Statue and were completely blown away, not only by this incredible piece of art, but also by the beautiful museum that is also at this rest stop! The stunning sculpture is right off of I-90 before crossing the Missouri River heading West and is definitely on our recommended stops list now!
The plan was to stay on the wall in Badlands at one of our favorite boondocking spots, but the weather was looking pretty rough, so we decided to just do a drive through of the park with the rig. These types of parks are some of our favorites, because even if you are short on time and can’t stay in the area long, you still get to experience the landscape and beauty even with your rig attached.
The incredible scenery hits you right away when you enter the park. We pulled off at the first overlook right after the park entrance to see the stunning white and orange stripes down into the many canyons of the Badlands.
The weather was supposed to hold off for a few hours, but we got nailed while still driving through the park. Thankfully, we made it through the heavy rains and wind, and the sun was shining by the time we got back out to I-90, just as Corey predicted!
Soon after leaving the Badlands, Corey had to slow down for some pieces of tire in the road, and we were able to pull over and help out a fellow Grand Design owner who was on his way to Sturgis on his first RV trip and had blown a tire. Thankfully, we had all the tools he needed to get it changed and were all back on the road in just about 15 minutes!
Our insane day ended with us pulling into Keystone, South Dakota, with a pretty spectacular view from our campsite!
Stay tuned for next week as we visit Mount Rushmore with Jess’ parents! Be sure to like and subscribe and click on the bell icon for notifications when we release new video!

When we drove through The Badlands, we had our travel trailer hitched on the back. It was in the upper nineties and they were reconstructing the road. When the guys holding the signs on a pole that say stop on one side slow on the other had us stop, we ran back and grabbed cold pop out of our refrigerator and gave it to the workers. They must have radioed ahead because each one we came to had us stop and we got to give them cold pop. We have never seen more appreciative guys. We. enjoyed talking to them and seeing how much they appreciated the refreshments. We enjoyed the scenery as well!!

Eight years after we moved here, my wife contracted brain cancer and three months later, she passed away. That was almost ten years ago. Glad to be near family now that I am alone.

My memory of the first time I saw the Badlands is that I was in awe. I remember telling people how hard it was to focus my eyes, my loss if depth perception what with the the landscape and strata-coloring of it. Decades later and seeing it again in your video, now I think how great it is that developers will never be able to put multi-storied apartments there, with canopy covered parking, tennis courts, and a c-ment pond.
South Dakota and Wyoming: two very underrated travel destinations. Let's hope it stays that way.

I have enjoyed watching your videos since discovering your channel in 2020, while recovering from surgery. My wife and I are residents of South Dakota and just recently visited the black hills for our 10th anniversary. We have been there many times and there is always something to discover off the beaten path. We constructed our own teardrop camper together, building from the ground up and have now traveled over 5000 miles in our “Hobo Hilton “. We are almost always the smallest camper in the campgrounds at four feet wide, four feet tall and 8 feet wide… but we can go anywhere! . A gem off the beaten path in South Dakota is palisades state park just 10 miles off the interstate outside of Sioux Falls and pipestone national monument, also only 30 minutes from interstate 90 in Minnesota. I always enjoy seeing what you’re up to next, keep up the great work!

There is a book called Sacajawea by Anna Lee Waldo that your family might like. The book is extensively researched and although it is a biography of Sacajawea, you easily learn about the Lewis and Clark expedition. I agree that a lot of the places we all travel to are along this famous route and the book brings them to life. I think it's great that your family loves history and learning.

It stormed both times while we were at the badlands. We stayed all night at Wall Drug with rain and 35 mile per hour wind all night till 2 in the afternoon. Storm came from the north. So it brought down all the smoke from Canada and it was like heavy orange fog. We drove to Rapid Cit and it was just as bad. We wanted to take a helicopter ride to see Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse. But they were all grounded. We will have to redo that trip!

Can you imagine doing everything Lewis and Clark did, in modern times? Not canoes, but motorized boats! Lewis and Clark made it to Alaska, the Allen Expedition. Be sure to explore the area between the North Unit and The South unit of the park. You can find the Wounded Knee Cemetery. Be sure to Check out the town of Interior. There is a place called Sheep Mountain Table. DO NOT enter if it has rained. The white mud is like driving on butter. High winds and thunderstorms are pretty typical in the Badlands. The beauty is, you cab see them coming right across the Prarie.

Badlands is a family favorite. We just had our 10th Annual Family Camping Extravaganza at the KOA there in June. Massive hail storm - everyone had major damage to vehicles (many were totalled by insurance) and my son and I had damage to our campers (his was totalled - mine was okay - fiberglass helped!). It was a wonderful time, but wasn't exactly cheap lol. Love that place though.

Some of those squalls are downright nasty. We had spent a couple of days just outside Rocky Mountain National Park (lots of adventures inside). Ran north out of Colorado across Wyoming on a quick run back home (just north of Portland Oregon). Had been a long day and were making time cutting across Wyoming when daylight was about to run out and my body had already run dry. Found an especially wide spot on a two lane road on which to spend the night. Kept the hybrid Ultra Light Jayco hooked to the car (Ford Explorer) but did drop the stabilizers. During supper the squall lines began blowing through. Thought for sure that they were going to take us on a cross country wind tour! Thankfully they blew themselves away by bed time. Around 2-3 am we heard a trucker pull in beside us. He did leave plenty of room so we could pull out after breakfast. It was that trip that convinced us that we needed to step up to a fifth-wheel with a larger tow vehicle!

Sooooo many memories brought back from this episode! Thanks ya’ll! First, @2:30, first trip out, same view from Keystone, one of our twins started bouncing up & down in his car seat and was screaming; “THE FACES, THE FACES, I SEE THE FACES!” The kids got to tent camp at Flintstone Park in Custer that year. (Note: that campground is now defunct; but a VERY worn out Dino still stands guard in the trees!). We’ve made multiple trips out and just LOVE to stop at the Lewis & Clark (we call it) rest stop. Camped at BLACK Hills KOA in 22. Got great video of severe ⛈️’s that passed by. Great campground as it’s all alone…south of the park…no cell signal👌👍🏻.
Suggestion for anyone going to the Black Hills: Ya want to do the Chuck Wagon Dinner beside Palmer’s Gulch KOA. (You can find info on their website). Steak cooked to order. But the best part is their version of baked beans cooked in Dutch ovens…only thing I went back for refills on! THAT good! Cowboy singers for entertainment…simply a fantastic evening.
Again, great video and thanks for the memories!

Couple things this made me think of. First, the wall (as you keep referring to it) was the first video I watched of yours. I think it was titled "Living on the edge" and you opened it with a drone fly over. You had me right there. Second, I had a blow out on my truck while towing the RV. Weirdest thing it blew the center rubber but left the outer wall and belts in tacked. Then blew it again on a brand-new tire while towing this time the core of the valve blew out but that wasn't enough, we made it to our destination and while parking the RV the stem on the other rear tire got cut. Needless to say, all new tires and spare. Parking on the wall is at the top of my bucket list.

Before Lewis and Clark went west to St. Louis to start their trek up the Missouri River. They met across the Ohio River from Louisville, KY. The town there is called Clarksville, IN. The Clark Memorial Bridge is US Hwy 31 coming across into downtown Louisville. The East end bridge they just built a few years ago is named for Lewis and Clark as well. The Falls of the Ohio State Park has a Memorial Statue of the meeting to talk about heading west. Great video! I love when you show history. I am a big history buff.

This spring we left from our home near St. Louis took a 5 week trip to Oregon and back. We missed this stop that you featured, but saw a LOT about Lewis & Clark. So after we got home we decided to go to the museum in Hartford, IL (20 miles from our home😂) where they spent the winter preparing for the trip, gathering supplies, and building the boat before they set out. There is a replica of the boat in the museum. An amazing accomplishment.

Next time you go to the Badlands, drive Highway 44 from Interior to Rapid City. Make a quick stop in Scenic, South Dakota, and stroll around town for a few minutes.
It's really a nice drive, especially when in the Cheyenne River area. I prefer it over the interstate.

We are always amazed when we come across Lewis & Clark spots and yes, there are lots! We towed through Badlands NP too. We had to skip the hikes because of our dog, but we still loved it!
Yikes on that storm! We boondocked at the dispersed area and would love to do it again, but no way in that weather!

Loved the episode. Next time your out their take a drive on The trans America Trail road that goes right thru the middle of the badlands. It's a gravel roadway. You literally drive right thru the middle and see it from a totally different perspective that you can't get from the paved road!

Love your CZcams channel, have watched you for several years now! Little known fact, Lewis and Clark weren’t the first Europeans to reach the Pacific. Alexander MacKenzie was! ……….. In July of 1793, a 29-year-old Scotsman named Alexander Mackenzie, working for the fur-trapping Northwest Company, traveled this same route through what is now British Columbia. Accompanied by seven French-Canadian voyageurs, two native porters, and a dog, he eventually reached the Pacific Ocean and became the first to cross North America, beating Lewis and Clark by a good 12 years.
