    I've seen dubs before where even though we hear english, they canonically are speaking Japanese. So, when they bring up learning English or speak to English people, they say how their English isn't very good even though we hear it all as perfect English. It makes for interesting conversations...

      In R.O.D the TV, the Japanese version has the characters in school studying English in class. The English version instead has them learning French instead, so it avoids this issue. They also got people with real British accents to voice the British characters (Helena Taylor (Bayonetta) plays Yomiko and it's amazing). Honestly one of the best dubs ever IMO

      +Communist_Penguin While it may make sense for the Japanese studio to not necessarily have access to a cachet of English actors to handle dubbing, it makes no sense that Funimation wouldn't have had access to the original Japanese lines as they handled the sub as well.

  • @suburiboy
    @suburiboy Před 6 lety +481

    Black lagoon's English dub is actually kinda awesome. most of the characters are American and canonically speak English, so it's nice to have native English coming out of them. Also with the level of swearing in that show, the English localization includes more authentic swearing.
    The Japanese audio takes a more traditional approach, where all characters speak Japanese(even though the audience is meant to understand that the in-universe conversation is happening in English), except when English vs Japanese interaction is canonical, then broken english is used.

    • @DreadNought0255
      @DreadNought0255 Před 6 lety +30

      I love Black Lagoon's dub more then the sub. The characters have MUCH more personality and dubs in general add a lot of it through accents. And in the second season where they went to Japan, they actually use this same overlay technique AND have the dub VO actor speak in japanese during the translation scenes between Balalaika and the Yakuza.
      Though for the accents it could simply be that in the original version the voice actors use different Japanese dialects to convey the same personality differences but for us in the west, it all sounds the same.

    • @Jestrath
      @Jestrath Před 6 lety +18

      Black Lagoon is one of the animes I highly recommend watching the dub over the sub. I am usually for watching subs but I feel like some dubs are actually better than the original voice acting. The majority of the time this isn't the case though. A few other instances I can think of where I thought the dub was better are: Hellsing. Hellsing Ultimate, Black Butler, Full Metal Alchemist/ FMA Brotherhood, Fruits Basket, Ghost Stories, Code Geass and DBZ.

    • @suburiboy
      @suburiboy Před 6 lety +14

      Ghost Stories barely counts though. Yes, the dub is great, but you really aren't getting a localization in any meaningful sense. It's more like watching an abridged series dub.

    • @Jestrath
      @Jestrath Před 6 lety +9

    Funimation, Sentai Fimworks, etc. should just do this officially with every blu-ray release. Think about it, they already have the rights to sell the English, as well as the Japanese versions. If these licensing companies did this with their official blu-ray releases, it could offer an attractive incentive to buy the blu-ray. Granted, this would only happen with the select few anime where multilingual lines are spoken, but I personally would love to see this happen. Better yet, I'd love to see a collaboration between the actual anime studio and the English licenser where if they needed characters to speak fluent English they could get in touch with the American VAs to voice those lines.

      @donovangunther4538 Před 6 lety +2

      armynurseboy probably because the East teaches traditional English and would be more immersed listening to voice actors who are fluent with it. Just a theory

    • @armynurseboy
      @armynurseboy Před 6 lety +5

      No, I think the issue is that that there is a lack of bilingual actors so they get whomever they get. For example, in the movie adaptation of the anime Beck, two of the main characters are supposed to be Japanese Americans who are colloquially fluent in English. The actors they got to portray them WERE fluent in real life....but one was from Europe and one from Australia, and their accents reflected that. The average Japanese person would not have caught that, although they likely would have maybe thought they sounded different from English they may have heard before.
      BTW, it depends on where in Asia you're talking to what accent an Asian listener is used to hearing. In many places, American English is the more common accent they hear. And with the widespread distribution of American pop culture, more and more folks are exposed to the American accent. And in Korea and the Philippines, they actually prefer to teach and learn the American accent.

    • @sc81838
      @sc81838 Před 4 lety +4

If a Japanese film has English speaking characters they should actually hire legit native speakers to voice them, and then just put subs for them in Japanese for their local viewers. This way they are establishing that the people are from a foreign nation however the technology is actively translating so that our main characters and the audience can understand it their native dialect.

    • @higurashikai09
      @higurashikai09 Před 6 lety +4

      The issue is that depending on the scene it may not make any sense. Take that scene with the car for instance. If the japanese guy can use his device to translate his voice real time to English, why would he have the English speaker speak first after talking to him in Japanese. If he was able to translate his own voice, he would have spoken first to communicate rather than the other way around. I can see this being a bigger issue in other scenes and other movies, so it’s actually easier to use the Japanese voice acting along side the English voicing because it keeps the original context of the scene and therefore would match up better.

    Speaking of dubs, I'm still a bit disappointed in what they've done to Little Witch Academia. Considering it's an international school located in Britain, students of Luna Nova would definitely be speaking English, but with their respective country's accent.
    I mean, at least give Diana received pronunciation to up her snooty factor.
    Bonus points for Brooklyn accent for Amanda.

    • @Imicus
      @Imicus Před 6 lety +8

      Agreed.
      I love the dubs that have a diverse cast of people, Hellsing Ultimate had a lovely blend of UK and American voice talent and I loved every bit of it, but the ones (which are most of the dubs) where no matter what setting you are put in everyone sounds american, or are americans putting on bad accents, it's a big turn off for me.

    This pretty much applies to any situation where the characters have to speak English. There's a girl in Senran Kagura who occasionally speaks English but the subs were already in English. Xseed decided to make it read like she's an English speaker who occasionally speaks French. I don't really like that approach as it's dishonest about what's really being said. I know it's weird but when it comes to something being dubbed so that people can avoid subtitles altogether I'd prefer something where a guy pulls out a translator even though they're all speaking the same language. I'll admit Funimation made the right call. Since the composite is great but still requires subs, it makes sense to just accept some awkwardness for everything to translate well.

    • @LightsJusticeZ
      @LightsJusticeZ Před 6 lety +2

      Haha yeah I noticed that too! I was like "wait...the subs are in French...but she's speaking English...". It works when you piece it together to try to understand what and why they did it that way.

    Interesting topic and great example of how editing and rewrites after the fact, can improve the anime experience. From watching behind the scenes for shows like Archer, and DCAU projects, It's apparent that a lot of voice actors either work from home or via teleconference with the voice directors. The anime studios should (if budget allows), hire foreign actors if the goal is to provide non Japanese characters i.e. Western, Asian, European, African, S.American authentic and nuanced dialects and language is critical plot device.

    awesome review, well written, well spoken, and the reference at the end was so good. I just might look this movie up. I really enjoyed the anime, and I think the hybrid version you mention does sound like the best of both worlds. Why they didnt do it that way in the first place is either actor availability issues or due to some union contract that said they had to use all Japanese actors (voice actors I mean)

    I remember Phoenix Wright having a similar issue for the game translation. The original games were set in Japan and a vast chunk of character names and puns had to be changed so that the English version made sense and was funny. They even changed the game's setting from Japan to America. However fans have often pointed out how ludicrous this is when very Japanese specific things kept popping up on the series that were harder to change. It's easy enough changing dialogue since it's just text the player reads but when it comes to background art of locations you visit or the sprites of the characters this is harder to do. So you'll get things like characters initially replacing going to get Japanese food with stuff like burgers since it was text only but then the characters have to talk about cherry blossoms because they're in the art background or how some characters dress in traditional old Japanese clothing. Sure they sometimes get away with it by saying there is s festival on or something to cover people dressing weird but there are still some jarring translation issues the series has had over the years. Even similar events happen when certain characters are supposed to be "forreign" like American, but since the game in the English version is in the US they had to change which country the forreigner is from like German or just don't mention it.
