I will say one thing for the uninitiated: if you ever want to really rewatch Psycho-pass do yourself a favour and read Foucault's Crime and Punish and Russell's The Conquest of Happiness.
Other good books that are referenced or related: Dick's Do androids dream of electronic sheep, Gibson's Johnny Pneumonic, Orwell's 1984, Swift's Gulliver's Travels, Berlin's Two Concepts of Freedom, Conrad's Heart of Darkness, Project Itoh's Genocidal Organ, Terayama's Saraba, Ega Yo.
After studying philosophy at uni and rewatching Psycho-pass I feel a bigger appreciation of its themes, I am actually really impressed with how beautifully many of the ideas in political philosophy and continental philosophy are pictured. There's just so much to the story that you don't get if you haven't read these works and I think understanding Makishima's character in particular requires some familiarity with continental philosophy.
I admire your essay and that's why I'll like it. But beware that I strongly disagree with sequels slander being "nonexistent", because while the scriptwriting definitely went downhill, they greatly expanded and given much more substance to the center of triforce, the Sibyl System and it's power of evolution to better fit with our MC's sense of justice, and that shouldn't be easily overlooked. The 2100s Japan is alive and fascinating and not stale as one would think from just watching Season 1 and ignoring the rest and this is the hill I'm ready to die on.

we're gonna need a Providence update - I'm interested in seeing what your analysis of it is.
A big part that made this show so good is that Makashima is a near perfect sympathetic villain. His logic is on spot, despite his worldview being coherent he is evil, hes willing to die for his convictions, and most importantly he is slick meaning that he is smarter and stronger than his opposition. Such a great character.
can't even remember how i stumbled across PP. it was many years ago. recently, i rewatched S1 & all that follows & found it to be the most compelling & cerebral series, anime or otherwise, that i have maybe ever seen.
the relationship between Akane & Shinya (sp?) is superb. didn't need to fall into romance, and instead took a deeper stronger path.
as for Cybil.. that's an all-nighter with fine wine & finer whiskey 😉😉
excellent video. really enjoyed every aspect. thank you
Will you be doing a follow-up on how the movies, the sequels, the novels, and the games pick up what The Butcher laid down, what they get right, and where they fail to live up to this masterpiece?
PsychoPass 2 has already been covered very thoroughly by a lot of people, and I don't think I could contribute much to that conversation.
Covering the other PsychoPass related material isn't off the table though. And if I were to, I would probably briefly mention 2 in passing.
Thank you so much for this well thought out video! I thorougly enjoyed it.
This is such an insane amount of love and care and it’s really got me kind of teared up. This has been my favorite show for ten years and you get it so deeply, thank you for this and happy (belated) ten years of psycho-pass!
This video is an absolute masterpiece! I enjoyed and learned something every second
You just made me love the show even more! The fact that this didn't get more views is offensive
I love Psycho Pass. It was my introduction to Urobuchi and has remained one of my favorite series by him. Its tied with Kamen Rider Gaim as best series from Urobuchi.
Well thought out and fun video essay. This increased my IQ. thanks PNUT.
fantastic video!
this video rockd. I learned a lot about the show. I subscribed
Gurren Lagann, Hunter x Hunter, Psycho Pass, you've got great taste, and your videos are a breath of fresh air when compared to the synopsis reading CZcamsrs out there. Subbed
This is so good! Why doesn't it have more attention?
What Kougami said to Akane is "Shoot me" in Japanese, for the info.
Edit: "The law doesn't protect the people, people protect the law." was a line that had been embed into me all those years to my core.
I know Psycho Pass isn't everyone's cup of tea, but to this day is one of the most life changing shows I've come across, especially given how and where we're headed to in this current era.
Really great video essay.
I would ignore the second Season, and go directly to the third and the three movies, including Sinners of the Systems and The First Inspector, there is a new movie coming in the 14 of June, that is a prequel to Season 3, that explain the people that Akane killed and how she end up lock up.
It's sad to see this amount of views after eva/guren video. But i can't blame them, not everyone is ready to watch 6 HxH videos, and then 3x longer video essay. Thank you for it nonetheless
I think Griffith might have something to say about being on the same list as Makishima.
Funny enough I'm fairly sure I prefer a good story with bad characters if I had to choose, which is funny since you used rogue one as an example and that's my favorite star wars movie XD (also I perfer AK"s to revolvers)
On "the law doesn't protect people, people protect the law" it's somewhat similar to an Epicurus quote (and similar quotes) on the nonexistent nature of absolute justice: "There never was such a thing as absolute justice, but only agreements made in mutual dealings among men in whatever places at various times providing against the infliction or suffering of harm."- Epicurus
Love from India, waiting for fate zero analysis
If you'd like a similar and good, but not as well done (after all it'd be hard to top Psycho Pass), I'd recommend checking out ID: Invaded
I love the fact that there is no season 2 or 3 of this show
I love modern benchmark for quality of life in different society systems - at least they have gay.
NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICE VIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIID 😀👍👍👍👍
loved it and completely agree with you. Happy to someone else gushing about Shogo
Where did this guy go? :(
Shogo Makishima was so badass and awesome that once he [*spoiler] I didn't bother watching any other "Psycho Pass" story.
I wish the sequel was better, but the original story was amazing. Too bad they just did a spin off for part 2 with mostly new characters.
> 22:23. If there was a season 2
wdym by that? Season 2 and 3 exist.
It's a tongue in cheek joke, because the other seasons weren't written by the original writer, and aren't considered as good as the quality of writing kinda drops.
@@nomadsgalaxy much later I believe sinners of system 3 is closest to season's 1 perfection. The plot is simple in good way and characters are interesting.
the only thing that ruins the show that it I feel like Gracia is forced villain as it's out of character. It's a bad plot twist although there's hint in one of early scenes where paramilitary dragon members say they are not but the problem is it can be easily dismissed as distrust. Instead of Gracia being villain I'd add some inside group that controls the mercenary company action without Gracia's knowledge and with kogami they clear it out.
Season 3 Has great idea and it's actually very enjoyable if you overlook the problems. Simply to put it's great idea but bad execution. Am not against Mentalist idea BUT! When I reevaluated story I think it could have worked if they made his ability through childhood surgery where he was given implant that unknowingly directly connect to Sybil system and thanks to that he can figure out cases but at expense of bad headaches. Not just fatigues and stress. Lastly I'd rework the Bifrost and first inspector. Great idea but bad execution .
@nomadsgalaxy 2nd season was like let's put some black inside Akane.
Like capitalism. It has many flaws and exploited many times but its the fairest system known to man. You do away with it and then what? Well were seeing that what today. Police can be pricks but defund them and lets see where that takes us. Were definitely seeing that.Akane sees Sybll as a necessary evil and destroying it without something better will only destroy society. Sybll was basically gone with the whole helmet incident. If Akane saw the Sybll core without that whole incident she may have destroyed the system.
I think what's also worth mentioning is how both in reality and in how it is portrayed in season 2, a lot of those "lesser evil", "best among given options" systems are self-serving and quick to shut down alternatives (even if "season of hell" has to happen for it). So there is no real way for a "good" alternative to pop up. It will be either reform of current system (what Akane and Kamui standed for), or revolt against it (anarchists and late Kogami). Once again the answer as to who is right is not given directly, but only characters trying to actively shut down any change from both sides are shown as clearly in the wrong (Togane family)
I am probably an outlier on the community, because I do like Psycho Pass, but I really don't care for Makishima. I find him pretentious and his ideals childish. Still pretty cool tho

This is hands down one of the dumbest anime I’ve ever seen.
And I’ve seen Rent a Girlfriend
The whole premise is “comically inept crime fighting system that blatantly doesn’t do what it’s set out to do is bad”
Yeah no shit.
Makishima is your run of the mill psychopath in a world where said shallow psychopaths aren’t affected by the system that uses stress as a barometer to determine your predisposition to committing crime because,
Get this…
Psychopaths don’t feel stress over such things.
alright, this video is absolutely amazing! there is details so it genuinely feels like i learned something and i found the humor pretty funny. The scene introductions felt like thorhighheels in a good way. AMAZING CONTENT! 🤍🤍
I recently watched the series and I’ve been scraping the bottom of the barrel for content on it so i was hyped to see an almost 2 hour video about it. Thank you for your service. 🫡 I really like/love all the main characters but MAKISHIMA!!! Definitely my favorite antagonist now. He instantly hooked me from the moment he appeared. Also a season 2 of psycho pass?? pshhhh that’s hilarious we all know that would never happen!
