Was HELA Trapped in SOUL WORLD? - (And Did She Survive?) THOR Love & Thunder MARVEL Theory Explained

  • Hela is the greatest villain that Thor ever faced. She defeated him I battle, destroyed his hammer, conquered Asgard, murdered the Warriors 3, and forced Thor to fundamentally change. That's more than Loki could ever accomplish, and Hela did it in about a day. But none of this explains where the heck Hela was imprisoned for all those eons.
We have a theory that Odin trapped her in soul world--making a bargain with the vampiric soul stone to provide Heimdall with the soul stone's powers. This also ties into the theory that Odin originally sought out the infinity stones and designed the infinity gauntlet.
It's not that big of a stretch. Hela is the goddess of death, and Soul World is a realm of the dead--similar to the spirit world that the Wakandans visit after drinking the heart-shaped herb. This also explains how Odin can continue to speak with Thor after his death, the Odinsleep, and why he turned his heart toward peace.

A long running theory for many MCU fans is that Odin once sought after the Infinity Stones. He almost gathered them all, only to change his mind once he realized the destructive power of his conquest. To support this theory, we have his possession of the tesseract, which may have been used to invent the Bifrost. There’s also the infinity gauntlet he keeps in his basement, and his knowledge of the reality stone.
And Odin used to be a conqueror, subjecting the nine realms with brute force, with Hela by his side. So it would make sense that he would have pursued the infinity stones. But something made him drop this quest, and turn his heart toward peace. Many people think that Odin’s quest stopped the moment he reached Vormir and learned the price of the soul stone. In Odin’s case, he may have been asked to sacrifice Hela or his wife Frigga.
This idea is the key to our theory about where Hela was locked up, and why it took so long for her to escape. And our theory also explains why she could only escape when Odin became one with the force.
We also think that Odin secretly benefited from her imprisonment-and not just because he was removing a dangerous megalomaniac from the right hand of his throne.
Here’s our theory: What if it was actually Odin who created the Soul Stone’s price of “A Soul for a Soul”? Odin might have built Well of Souls on Vormir-as a way to communicate with the Soul Stone. Oh, hey soul stone, what’s up? Hey Odin, I’m hungry, got any of them sweet, sweet souls?
I mean, someone had already visited the well of souls. Someone had to have drawn the map that led Gamora and Thanos to Vormir, right?
Infinity War establishes that the infinty stones have a kind of intelligence. Maybe the soul Stone was a malevolent intelligence, demanding Odin sacrifice more and more souls for him to feed on. This is how the original Soul Gem operated in the comics, when Adam Warlock was its host in the ‘70s.
When the stone demanded Odin’s soul, he would have made a counter offer. He tells the stone, “what if you only take one soul as a sacrifice?”
And the soul stone responded with, “I need that one soul to be someone who’s loved-someone who was worthy of my hunger.”
And at this point, Odin realizes that Hela would totally sacrifice him to get all the infinity stones. So, it’s him or her. But Odin, the old softie, doesn’'t want to kill his daughter-so he makes a bargain with the Soul Stone.
Odin and the soul stone form a symbiotic bond. He tells the soul stone that it can have Hela-imprisoning her inside Soul World. That’s the orange pocket universe inside the soul stone, that we saw in Infinity War.
The stone agrees to imprison Hela inside it, but with limitations. Odin has to use all of his strength to keep Hela imprisoned so the stone can feast on her-and the focused energy also prolongs his life.
In exchange, the stone allows Odin to use a portion of its power. And maybe, the Odin sleep was a way for him to recharge this energy, to keep her trapped inside soul world. After Odin’s death, this power would return to the stone.
And the stone wants to keep Odin alive. Because, if he were to die, then Hela would be freed, and the stone would lose its grip on Hela’s tasty, tasty soul. While Heimdall continuously shows that he has the powers of the soul stone.

Nope, Odin was stuck with a choice, destroying asgard was the only way to kill hela, Odin was already in peace mode so he wasn't willing to do that, so he used the Odin force to imprison her. She was free from imprisonment because the Odin force was no longer in effect after his death, because now it's the Thor force. It's not fancy but it's based on Canon and fits occam's razor

Great theory. This might also explain why Heimdall couldn't see the Dark Elves since their power is based off of the residual power of the Reality stone. Hela could very well be alive and have Odin's spear Gungnir, which is pure Uru, in her possession.

I thought she was made too powerful and that made her kind of boring. "Her power comes from Asgard, she'll get stronger the longer she's there." How? Why? What does that mean? Apparently it means she can kill anyone effortlessly by throwing magical blades, but that's just kind of boring to watch. She looked cool, Cate Blanchett vamped it up quite well, but Hela effortlessly destroying the armies of Asgard is just kind of like.. ok? I guess. My least favorite thing about the movie. Like she was just a plot device to wipe out secondary characters and ultimately lead to the destruction of Asgard.

My head cannon. It wasn't hela's ambitions that outgrew Odin's. It was because Odin and Frigga was pregnant with Thor. A male heir. The old nordic world was a patriarchy but if a man had no sons he could raise his daughter like a son. Giving her the same rights as any man but as soon as that woman got married or had a son, she would loss all standing and her rights would go to the husband or son. Or if the father had a male heir.
Odin didn't just Exile his own daughter. He had her intirely erased from history. I think it was because Hela feared she'd lose her place as the rightful heir to Asgard, so she turned on her own father and tried to take the throne from him! By force. Which greatly angered the old god so he not only banished her and erased all trace of her he even banned anyone from ever mentioning her. I quess that makes sense as to why Thor and Loki never heard of her :)

    • @gregbasore2108
      @gregbasore2108 Před 2 lety +5

I think Odin did more than ban mention of her. She mentions to the gathered crowd of Asgardians that no one seems to remember her. That crowd includes people as old or older than Odin, so they should at least recall her even if they'd been forbidden to speak of her.
Seems likely that The Runes of Kauf Kaul were used to wipe her memory from the realm eternal. Runes have a long, rich history in Nordic/Asgardian culture, so it makes sense that the spell came from Asgard before it was added to the tomes of Kamar Taj.

I'll go ya one better: I wanna see a set of MCU movies in the '60s through '80s with X-Men, Fantastic Four, Squadron Supreme, Namor, Classic Wasp/Ant-Man, Classic Nick Fury and Sentry. In addition to fleshing out the mysterious backgrounds of guys like Odin and T'Chaka and Howard by having them be supporting characters or getting their own movies, you could also have a set of prequels that dodge the biggest problem of prequels. More oft than not, there's not mystery or tension, because we know who's gonna live and who isn't. With X-Men, FF, Namor etc. that wouldn't be the case. Instead, we'd be wondering "Why aren't these guys present in modern day and why is no one talking about them in the modern era?"

It’s important to remember that in the opening of Infinity War Ebony Maw said that “Never before has anyone wielded the power of two Infinity Stones.” I don’t think this contradicts your theory, though. He already had the Space Stone, and probably had an idea where the reality Stone was since it was his father that sealed it away, but I think it’s possible that Odin gave up on his Infinity Quest after he realized the price of the Soul Stone. Knowing Hela would have gladly sacrificed him for the Stone and realizing what he was becoming, he had no choice but to sacrifice/imprison Hela tying his life to her imprisonment through the power of the Soul Stone.

I saw someones comment about all of Wanda's visions kind of come true. But apart from Thor and Tony's and Caps. Thor was supposed to die with his people during Ragnorok. But because of Lokis unpredictable nature of saving them last minute, Thor survived and some of his people and he even survived Thanos. Same thing with Tony, everyone was supposed to die by Thanos, but time travel kind of undid most of it and he died instead. Cap was never supposed to get that last dance but he did through time travel which goes against the natural order. So it proved chaos can rewrite reality. It's kind of cool when you think hard about that :)

Hela is the goddess of death. She can't die. In the mythology hela's wolf Garm guards the gates to helheim. Hela decides who goes and who leaves 'her' land of dead. I get the comics are different from the mythology but I'm pretty sure she has resurrected herself a couple of times in the comics. Why else call her the goddess of death? if she can't even conquer death herself..

MCU Hella is a bit different from the comics from what I know. In the comics, what you say makes sense, but in the MCU I feel they will develop her differently. It's kinda like how Lady Loki and Enchantress have their character's merged in the MCU.

I think it would be great if she came back but with the new title of Lady Death. Red Skull became keeper of the soul stone, a soul for a soul implys that "souls" do have purpose and power in this universe, maybe she could have been brought back as a collector of souls for a yet unseen big bad.
Plus if we're introducing Deadpool again, it'd be nice to see him fall for her, and her become fascinated by not being able to harvest his soul.

Hela is a hella powerful villian....sorry figured someone would say it. But I like this theory. Heimdall did say seeing souls. Maybe that's what he sees when he sees people wherever they are in the universe. And the deep that when Odin dies she is freed. And, as far as I remember, MCU Odin never mentioned (or stated about him) he gave an eye for wisdom. That's just lore. But what if his eye was the "tax" on the deal to swamp souls until he naturally (for an Asgardian) died.

Your theory doesn't address that Hela's power was tied directly to Asgard. That is why Thor let Certa destroy it: destroy Asgard = destroy Hela. So you need a way that a nerfed Hela can survive both the destruction on Asgard, and the cold cold emptiness of space.

I have a crazy theory. What if Bor is the one who taught Odin about the infinity stones? I've never heard anyone talk about this, but it seems obvious upon rewatch. For instance, the beginning of Thor: TDW shows us that Bor knew about the Aether. It also shows us the Bifrost being used during a time before Odin's reign and if you're like me and believe the Tesseract was key to its creation, then that means that Bor had knowledge of it as well. I think what may have happened is Bor taught Odin about the stones and out of his own curiosity, he began a quest for the others, sort of like Thor did. While I don't think he was able to find them all, I do believe he was able to find the Soul Stone and that the Odinsleep is derived from its power much like how the Arc Reactor is derived from the power of the Tesseract. I also think that Heimdall's power comes from it, which implies that he came into contact with it or its energy similar to what happened with Carol and Wanda. Maybe that happened because of Odin, or it was under his watch. Seeing how the Mind Stone corrupted Loki's mind in the Avengers, Odin might have also had it in his possession at one point, and perhaps that's what caused him to conquer the nine realms instead of protecting and keeping the peace between them as his father and grandfather did. Perhaps people knew he had multiple stones in his possession at one point, and this is the reason he had the fake gauntlet made because he didn't want anyone to know he stopped searching or that hid the ones he had, so he led people to believe he was able to collect them all. The only problem with this is that Ebony Maw says that Thanos is the first to wield multiple stones, but all that shows is how they knew Odin didn't have all of them. With that said, it not too much of a reach to think they may have also presumed he never wielded multiple stones at once either, whether or not he actually did. Anyway, that's my crazy theory.

I thought Hela was going to be Lady Death the driving force behind Thanos' Infinity Quest, you know telling him Asgardian lost Secrets but no such luck...
Also I don't think it not keeping two stones in one place was fear of temptation, but they are "alive" and want to by together so having two together calls the others.
But Odin using the four or so stones he collected to forge Asgard and empower her people would work. Odin All-Power/Reality, Asgard the Timeless city, Heimdall Soul, Bifrost Space...

before the Infinity War movie, i thought that Heimdal had the Soul Stone because he had an organge gem in his chestplate that had the Tree of Life/Light engraved on it, and his pupils were orange and he said he could see 10 billion souls and in Captain America, the Space Stone was hidden in a relief sculpture of the Tree of Life/Light . and when Heimdal was killed, maybe the Soul Stone was sent back to Vormir. in the Silver Surfer cartoon, Thanos is in love with Death, a female marvel character. Hela said she was the Goddess of Death. Odin had the Space Stone in his vault, guarded by the Guardian. why did Thanos wait until Infinity War movie to collect the stones? he had to wait for Odin to die, to get the Space Stone. but Odin dying released Hela , maybe Thanos knew Hela and was waiting to impress her with killing half the Universe . like he did in the comic books.
