Hela isn't Hela - Thor Ragnarok

  • Thor: Ragnarok was delightful and it was anchored by a truly fun and menacing villain in Cate Blanchett's Hela. While it's clear that Hela is based heavily on her comic counterpart, there are a lot of big changes to the character that you may have missed. In this video, I take a look at six comic characters and one broader concept that in one way or another influenced the MCU's take on Hela.
    SPOILERS for Thor: Ragnarok and to a much smaller extent, other movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
    Special thanks to CZcamsrs MCU Scenes and Janootz for clueing me into the Gorr connection.

    Waititi mentioned in a podcast that Odin was 'carrying' Hela with him wherever he went. She was imprisoned 'around' him, and sapping his strength regularly, contributing to his death. So in some alternate dimension. Apparently he did this after she broke out of her first prison, and he ordered the Valkyries in to weaken her so he could trap her within himself this time. Which I think is pretty cool and has nice metaphorical ideas.

    • @Ahris22
      @Ahris22 Před 6 lety +67

      Well, her norse name is 'Hel' and it's her name the word 'Hell' is derived from. But yes, she is the daughter of Loki in the mythology. It was Thor who cast her out to the underworld (Niflheim) where her kingdom is located.
      She is the sister of the Fenris Wolf and the great serpent Jormungandr.
      Her kingdom was synonymous with her name (Helheim means 'The home of Hel' but it was common to just say they went to Hel when they died) and it's where 'common people' would go when they died, only people who died in battle would go to Valhalla (Carried from the battlefield by the Valkyries).
      It's worth to note that Hel wasn't necessarily a bad place to go to pre-christianity, but it definately wasn't as classy as Asgard.
      Cate Blanchett as Hela was the best thing about this movie. :)

      Yh loki has 3 children: fenris wolf, the midguard serpent (wraps round the earth and bites its own tail to maintain order) and then hel who is meant to be half dead half alive and the "ruler of the underworld" kind of character. So hela takes very little inspiration from hel at all other than the death part. Not complaining tho as Blanchett did a great job with her and its really a huge shame marvel are god awful at villains. Hela could of easily stayed around for a bit and went to war with Thanos??? Maybe just a thought

  • @undead_corsair
    @undead_corsair Před 6 lety +210

    I liked Hela in Ragnarok, the problem though is what I think it's always been with Marvel villains, they die too soon. Most people say Loki is the best villain, I think it's an unfair comparison because he's been around for several films. I can't think of another main villain (Thanos hasn't properly done anything yet) that has lasted longer than one Marvel film. And Loki's more of an anti-hero now so he doesn't really count anymore. Marvel's heroes tend to be very likable, well-developed characters because they get multiple films to develop through. Pretty much all Marvel villains get one film and then they're offed. There have been comicbook movie villains that have made an impact in just one film of course, (Doc Ock, Heath Ledger's Joker) but they were already iconic before their films came out and in the Joker's case Heath Ledger stole the movie, and sort of overshadowed the titular character.
    I think Marvel really needs to give us some running villains that can have longer, better-developed rivalries with the heroes so that when the villains get beaten it makes for a more satisfying climactic moments.

    Im Swedish, norse mythology is the bedtime stories I grew up with and what happened here is obviously that they mixed the MC character with the actual mythological Hel from norse religion.
    Hel, along Fenrir, Jormungandr and depending on what Edda you read Sleipnir are all indeed Lokis children (and the children of the giantess Angrbođa) theyre also known as *The fang of chaos, The world eater* and *The sky strider,* Hel being the only one lacking a definitive title.
    Not that she need one, she is the ruler of Hel (yes, the underworld bears the same name) which is placed *in* Niffleheim and guarded by Garm, a giant frost wolf (in some versions Garm and Hatii are the sons of Fenrir and are chasing the sun and the moon across the skies turning night into day and vice versa.)
    Hel is where "bad people" go or perhaps rather where cowards go as in Norse mythology only people who dies a warrior death goes to Valhall.
    Not even *all* who do die a warriors death may go.
    The Valkyries sweeps the fields after battle, selects only the bravest warriors and guide their souls to Valhall.
    Hope this cleared some stutf up

      Theyre actually more descriptive than titles as in the lore the prophecy says when Fenrir breaks free and wreaks chaos upon the world and Jormungandr releases its tail and rises from the sea, Ragnarök (basically Norse mythologys Armageddon) will follow and Thor will fight Fenrir untill they both perrish..
      Sleipnir is Odins eight-legged steed which he quite literally rides across the skies.
      But yea, they do sound sort of ominous...

    for number 3 the reason Hela was "trapped" and too weak before Odin died is because Odin banished her from Asgard. It's really a shame they didn't play that out longer. Knowing what you guys have shared about Hela and Scourge, I'm actually pissed they killed them off. These characters should have been built and developed over at least a couple movies. Karl Urban and what's her face are both perfect in these roles, but adding this detail you guys are talking about makes them FAR more interesting characters blurring the lines of "evil."

      There's alot of different Hebrew names. One is satan ha-Mashhit or mal'ak ha Mashhit which means "Destroyer" or "destroying angel". Another is Maweth. There's also a distinct class of angels in Judaism called the Memitim which can mean "executioners", "slayers", or "destroyers". Samael is also another name, as well as Abbadon. Azrael is a name sometimes used in both Judaism and Islam. It all gets really complicated when you get down to it.

    I think in the comics, they have said that Hela is the daughter of a previous Loki. Since they go through Ragnarok, the gods get reborn so while Hela is the daughter of Loki, she's not the daughter of the current Loki. Or something. Because magic.
    I like comic book Hela but I LOVE MCU Hela, and that's largely because of Cate Blanchett's portrayal of her (much like I didn't care for either Maria Hill or Nick Fury until they were brought to life in the movies).

      Yeah, though I thought it was too bad that they approached Thomas Jane for the role of Frank Castle. In appearance, tone of voice, and bearing, I thought Thomas Jane would have made a much better Nick Fury.Even so, Samuel L. Jackson did a great job with the role. As time went by, I didn't care that I thought there could have been a better casting, because Jackson really owns that role, and rightly so. He captured the essence of the character, his "accountable to no-one attitude," and that gray morality that makes him one of the most interesting humans in Marvel.

    • @lunatickgeo
      @lunatickgeo Před 6 lety +1

      Michael Nicholas if they were casting the white Nick Fury, Thomas Jane is a pretty good choice. I'm glad they went the Sam Jackson route though. He adds something to the ensemble, Thomas Jane, I fear (although I could be wrong! we'll just never know), would have been swallowed up by RDJ, the two Chrises, Mark Ruffalo and even Tom Hiddles.

It retells the majority of the most well known myths and legends, always opening each chapter with the dry undramatized version first so you can compare how he adapted them into his work. It's clever, funny, exciting, and all around the best dramatic representation of Norse Mythology I've ever seen.

I enjoyed the film but it isn't the greatest. Mainly I just hope she is not going to be left dead like Red Skull for instance, and comes back with a vengeance and even nastier acts and intentions. After all, Thor hit her with all he had even with his newfound powers and he basically just knocked her down.

    I'm a little surprised there was no mention of Lady Death.
    villains.wikia.com/wiki/Lady_Death_(Marvel)
    I don't think they borrowed all that much from Lady Death for Thor Ragnarok, but I do believe they're setting Hela up to take Lady Death's place (willingly or otherwise) at Thanos' side during the upcoming Infinity War movies, which is why his presence and machinations were hinted at in a couple places in Ragnarok (Loki spotting the cube, the ship in post-credits). I'm sure you've ready the original Infinity Gauntlet series, I think they've been setting up a couple characters to step in and take over specific roles from OG Infinity Gauntlet. Specifically, I think Loki is being set up to take Mephisto's role as the conniving accomplice that tries and fails to steal the Gauntlet once Thanos assembles it, and Hela will be the avatar of death that Thanos falls for.

I stopped reading Thor after Williamson brilliant run and was scratching my head on how Hela, powerful as she was , was able to destroy Thor's hammer and instead of her death touch or hand if glory she was casting out spears and swords. Now I know. Spot on with your analysis.
    Just nitpicking though I wished they would have adhered more to the original Hela. Doctor strange proved you can simplify mystical powers. I wish mcu would just give Hela and Loki their magical powers in the comics. Hex bolts and such. Seems more powerful and visually appealing than Loki tossing daggers while and kung fu wire flips. But like I said, I am nitpicking. Loved the movie. Will see it again!

    I think maybe they didn't want to show her doing the whole Game of Thrones White Walkers thing so they opted for a different power set. I personally think her airwalking and and raising the dead while unleashing blast that age people and kisses that kill would've been murderously magnificent. Cate is such a great actress she could've made anything work.

    Something I think should be noted, that you were on the cusp of with the Angel of Death bit: I've heard it said and totally buy it that she might be the version of Death that Thanos falls in love with. That's an important part of his character, she is established, and has a great actress in the role. Unless they want to stack another character in on the complex Infinity War deal or leave that out of his story entirely, I wouldn't be surprised if they put her in there. Especially considering how Thanos, spoiler alert, runs into Thor at the end of Ragnarok.

      I think you took this movie too seriously. Where Guardians Vol. 2 took its threat deadly seriously, making those moments where it just doesn't feel completely out of place, Ragnarock just wants to have fun. There are no genuinely tense scenes, just scenes with cool action, and scenes with great laughs. It's a comedy. I expected nothing less from an indie filmmaker known best for his comedies.

    • @gabrielwilliams8508
      @gabrielwilliams8508 Před 6 lety +1

      Jared Delahoussaye I know right, all she wanted to do in that film was kill all the Asguardians, and keep Fenris and Skurge to rebuild her kingdom! Like, that concept is really cool, but it would just be them doing that with little to no people on Asguard!

    • @106588
      @106588 Před 6 lety +3

      It's an opinion I share the same one, I found that it was to focussed on being funny all the time reducing the impact of certained events in the film. Like the destruction of Asgard, did it have to have a joke running alongside? I know it was mentioned that it was just a place but come on everyone looked at their entire lifehood being destroyed and it had to be made funny. I think great comedies know how to balance between the really deep stuff and the funny stuff making a distinction when to use which. For example I love the series Scrubs they do this method in their episodes knowing when it's comedy and when it's drama.
      So I think his argument holds merit and it's not just a question of not ''seeing'' it.

    If I remember correctly Amora was in Marvels Agents of SHIELD! She came to Earth and Lady Sif followed her and got help from Coulson to capture her and return her to Asgard. Great episode, I remember learning a lot about Lady Sif and her feelings towards Thor (that I don't think are ever gonna develop in the movies but i'd kinda be indifferent about it if it did)

    • @Croftice1
      @Croftice1 Před 6 lety +74

      Marvel actually doesn't get things straight from the Norse mythology. They are creating their own version. In our real world, Marvel created these characters INSPIRED by the Norse mythology, while in the Marvel universe (both comics & MCU) THEY inspired the Norse people to create the mythology itself. Odin and co. are aliens, who came to Earth some thousands of years ago and inspired the people who then came up with the mythology, that's the Marvel version. Marvel is free to interpret their version of the Norse mythology, however they want, because that's how it works there. They are not taking the raw mythology and implementing it as it is. People just confuse it for that.
