With Shelley Duvall and Gena Rowlands' recent passing, we take a look at one of the more memorable episodes of Duvall's seminal Showtime classic, Faerie Tale Theatre. Actually, we use Rapunzel as a prism to look at the show itself, and how it was both a landmark for pay TV original programming - and a style of kids TV we haven''t seen before or since.
Very special thanks to Pop Arena ( / poparena ) for providing the inspiration for this series. Please, check out their Nick Knacks series, it's fantastic!
Great Pick, Hulkie
HBO Family and Starz Kids and Family were two of my childhood mainstays but I didn't visit Showtime Family as much as those two. I'm looking it up now; it's called Showtime Family Zone. I don't remember what shows they played but I did watch the Nickelodeon movies there.
I had no idea this show existed
RIP Gena Rowlands too, apparently. Man, what a year
That blinding scene has unfortunately lived in my brain since childhood.
Also, 100% agreed on Fraggle Rock being Jim Henson's finest.
RIP Shelley Duvall (1949-2024)
Obviously, you went with the Shelly Duvall episode for obvious reasons.
Personally, I consider the Sleeping Beauty episode to be the wildest.
Episode literally opens up with the king and queen wanting to have a baby.
The fairies tell them they can do so if they don’t read fairy tales before bed.
The king asks, “what are we going to do if we’re not reading stories?”
The queen replies, in no uncertain terms, “make a baby.”
And so they make a baby.
Okay, all of this is subtle and unsaid. But still…this was a kid’s show!
Is the update schedule still going to be sporadic...
@@JaydenSmithsonian I’m taking steps to get on a regular schedule; it’s been a rough summer.
I have two more Pick of the Weeks in production and I have actively begun work on Fox Kids Club episode 4.
@@HulkieDthanks for the update!!!!!!!!!!!
