  • @ddsdss256
    @ddsdss256 Před 4 lety +2

    Spot on! I've had my G9 for about a year and it's the best overall camera I've ever used. I shoot a lot of nature/wildlife and the Leica 100-400 (200-800mm FF eq) is phenomenal with the G9. Even an APC-C-compatible lens of close to that reach would be much larger/heavier (and forget about FF!). Also, with that lens, the dual IS gives you 6.5 stops--no tripod necessary unless you want shoot a super-long exposure or 80MP. Try that with FF...if you need more then maybe you drink too much! My G9 with battery grip (a must-have, as far as I'm concerned--it improves the already great ergonomics, especially with that "big" lens), Leica 8-18mm, Zhongyi 25 f/0.95, and Lumix GX 35-100 f/2.8 (multiply all of those FLs x2) plus spare batteries, flash gun, softbox, and other misc. stuff, plus an Olympus TG-5, all fits in a tiny pack and weighs

    • @FabledFew
      @FabledFew  Před 4 lety

      The "Full-Frame" hype is massive right now. Even people who don't know anything about photography have heard of "full-frame" and will dismiss any camera that isn't FF. It's ridiculous, if you ask me.

    • @simonc8265
      @simonc8265 Před 4 lety

      completely agree. the most fun functional cost effective camera and bang for buck lens to let you try new things. its got a bit label on it that says use me. now getting into the setting up different camera profiles for different jobs...something I could never be bother to do. firmware 2.0 was a welcome bonus and improvements of real value. as for the viewfinder on the g9.

    • @ddsdss256
      @ddsdss256 Před 4 lety +1

      Yep--may people are wasting their money and giving themselves back aches with FF, plus here's another MFT advantage: minimum focusing distance. Even the long Leica at 800mm "FF eq" can focus down to 1.3m/4.3' (compare that to more like 6m for a FF 800mm) which gives you the ability to practically shoot macros from a distance that won't spook a lot of subjects (plus it makes it a lot safer to shoot some potentially dangerous subjects)! Of course, the Olympus TG-5 (1/2.3") can shoot down to 1cm, plus it has several "microscope" modes and is submersible to 15m (but it only goes out to 100mm).

  • @GPadugan
    @GPadugan Před 4 lety +1

    From content to production, this was a extremely well done video! One question, you mentioned providing out of camera jpgs to your clients. Is this something they ask for or something you've just done without telling them? Curious, because I believe with the new technology among all brands, knowing how to properly expose a photo in camera, is all you really need to do. I'm starting to think the need for raw is more of an archaic hold-over from what are now the old days, lol.

    • @FabledFew
      @FabledFew  Před 4 lety +4

      Much appreciated! My wife primarily shoots weddings/engagement parties, and those shoots can often yield more than 2000 photos! It's a heavy task to sit down and edit 2000 photos, especially when you have 2 or 3 clients per week, so we hand over all the JPEGs, and ask them to choose about 20-30 photos for a special edit. I agree, knowing you have to deliver the JPEGs with no post-processing makes you think differently about photography, it really makes you step up your game and make sure you're nailing the focus and exposure of each shot. There's no "I'll fix it in post" anymore!

    • @jeffslade1892
      @jeffslade1892 Před 2 lety

      Yes and then consider that Adobe does not understand the Panasonic and Olympus "Extended-RAW" files and makes a botch of converting them leaving you with more work. If the jpeg is no good the raw will be rubbish too. Edit the jpeg.
      Silkypix converts better than Camera-RAW.
      Me, I rarely bother the raw file and I delete them over a couple of years old, they take up too much space

    I own the camera and like it's features especially since the 2019 firmware update. Its the only camera I know of that has a close focus capture for small songbird shots. I have programmed the lower front function button for that. Being able to customise each button is great. I also like the 6k photo stacking and high resolution capabilities for landscapes. However my experience is that it struggles with focus in low light, when I am photographing deer in woodland. For instances like that, I use an old Olympus EM1 which has hybrid contrast/phase autofocus. I use it with an Olympus 50 - 200 f2.8 - 3.5 from the old 4/3 system using an adapter. Focus is slower but reliable and adequate plus the lens is acceptably sharp wide open. It won't work with the G9 unfortunately

    • @FabledFew
      @FabledFew  Před 4 lety

      Focus in lowlight is very lens-dependant, I've found. Usually faster lenses are okay, but slower lenses, especially zooms, struggle.

      @@FabledFew Thanks, but I saw people mentioned this already in your second video about the GH5/G9. I miss two things on the G9:
      1: The ability to adjust the shutter angle. Not a major problem without it but would be nice to have.
      2: Let the user to turn off the shutter button and only use it for auto focus while in video mode. The button is very sensitive but I have got used to it in stills mode. In video mode however it seems the button is even more sensitive so I always get dozens of short clips that has been recorded unintentionally. I have moved the auto focus to the rear button instead in video mode to solve this but it is a bit unintuitive. The fact that the shutter button still triggers video recording in video mode kind of defeats the purpose of the dedicated video record button.

  • @jeffslade1892
    @jeffslade1892 Před 2 lety

    Something else - if you set up the G9 just so it can shoot acceptably at ISO 16,000 or more. The trick is having some light and contrast, it can be dim but has to be the right kind of light. But it is not hit or miss. You need to look at the read noise of these sensors. Now we have less read noise at ISO 12,800 than ISO 6400 it becomes doable. We do loose dynamic range but we can push the gain curve. The default noise reduction is often too aggressive and can cause artefacts, so it can be turned down a little. Sharpening, NR, Contrast, Saturation can be changed for each Photostyle. The blanket NR, iR, iD, can also be altered too. All of these are gain effects. Some of the gain effects are applied to the raw, the ISO certainly is. I find it best to set the camera up to take the best jpeg, the camera will do most of the work but default is not always right.

      Thank you! It was shot with the Sigma 18-35mm. Honestly, I don't see strange softness. The parts that were in focus seem very sharp to me. However, the wide shot of the jungles is bit a hazy, that's because of the fog that raised after a rainstorm the night before.

    Great review and nice photos! I have the GX85 & G85 - both have the sensor & processor right before the G9. I would never consider giving clients out of camera jpegs with either of these, so I just shoot RAW only with those cameras and process in Lightroom - even for personal work. This is the first I’ve heard of new colour science with the G9 & its newer sensor & processor. Interesting. If it could shoot video over half an hour (for events) I would sell my G85 on and pick up a G9 at the current price. The G9 is a much better camera for sure. But for people recording events, the 30 minute time limit is a dealbreaker. Too bad.

      I know what you mean. I had two G7(s) before the GH5 and G9, and I definitely did not give out any JPEGs then. Lots and lots of overnight editing. GH5 would be better for your needs, it seems, if you covee a lot of long events. You know, I really like the 709L profile in the GH5 for SOOC delivery, too! GH5 is the only camera that has the 709L picture profile, and its colors are really unique.

    • @LyndonPatrickSmith
      @LyndonPatrickSmith Před 4 lety

      Mohammad Rezaie I am still in that overnight editing phase as I sometimes use my Pannys for stills! : ) But actually it’s much better now that Lightroom has implemented the Universal Plug In feature. A couple of months ago Mastin presets did not look very good with Panasonic files. But with somewhat recent changes in Lightroom’s preset engine and Mastin adopting the Universal preset standard I can - unbelievably to me - get great skin tones on GX85 & G85 files in just a couple of clicks! Before these changes I never would have used the Panasonic cameras I have for a stills portrait shoot, but now I can and they look really good. I imagine with your G9 the results would be even better.

    Whilst the G9 is professional I am not so sure the rest of the G-series sits below the GX, the G7 is certainly as capable as the "enthusiast" level E-M5ii.
    The GH4 still buffers and stores quicker than the G9, and uses less of the same battery, but is showing its age in image quality now.
    The back of the G9, the sensor, gets hot shooting video - the GH4 is one big heat sink. This does restrict how long the G9 can shoot continuous video. You cannot shoot for hours like the GH4 can. There again the G9 is not a videography camera.

    There is one small detail I don't like about it... For many trips I have used a G80/G81/G85 for stills and video. When I walk around, I just put the camera in auto mode and I can quickly decide to take a photo or a video without messing around with settings. 99,9% comes out right. On the G9 the buttons are too far apart. You need to change the grip on the camera. And yes, I know, I know, I know, you should film in manual mode and I do that too with 50 kg of extra gear and a hernia :-) Just like you I shoot jpg because they are good enough. 8:57 ... dude, I have both, Olympus and Panasonic and going straight forward saying the G9 has the best stabilization in M4/3 is bullshit, even if you work for Panasonic... v__v
    Stabilization with wide angle lenses is full of warpiness at the edge of the frame: this camera barely keeps pace with the EM1MkII (which is older) even with dual stabilization in lens and Olympus has no issue at all stabilizing wide angle lenses even on older cameras. I didn't even mention the EM1 MKIII is in another ballpark stabilization wise, but nowadays is 1 and a half the price of the G9.
    I like the camera and has a lot of strengths, but when you come out and blatantly put out false informations like these you are not doing a good service to your audience.

    • @FabledFew
      @FabledFew  Před 4 lety +2

      I disagree. The Olympus' all have that warp distortion feeling while shooting video, regardless of the focal length, maybe except for EM1X (which is 3 times the price of the G9). The G9 does have better IBIS performance while shooting video. Your opinion does not mean I am "blatantly putting out false information". Thank you for watching.

    • @Leptospirosi
      @Leptospirosi Před 4 lety +2

      @@FabledFew they does NOT have distortions and warpines, or, at least, way, way less then Panasonic does currently. You clearly have no experience with them or you would know tha the Em1 MKIII is way better then the Em1X in stabilization and a 2/3 of the price. The 1000€ EM1MKII is just behind but certainly better then the G9 which has advantages I admit, with long focal (above 100mm) because in lens stabilization is more common in Panasonic range. This being told, Panasonic which certainly is better then Sony of Fuji in stabilization has still a long way to go before even being equal to Olympus, which has YEARS of advantages. The problem is that if you don't try and test the difference (with an umbiased mind), and I doubt you ever tied shooting Olympus seriously, you are gust acting like a PR for the brand
