The Panasonic Lumix G9 - All About the Gear

  • The Lumix G9 is one of the latest camera releases from Panasonic. It’s significant in many ways, one of the main reasons being that it’s squarely targeted at “stills” photographers (versus video shooters). Panasonic asked questions, listened, then implemented the suggestions for professional landscape, nature, sports shooters and others.
    The result is a triumph in engineering. And I’d even go so far as to say the Lumix G9 is probably the best camera I’ve ever owned!

    Well done. Will look forward to future G9 videos by you. I have the Fz2500 & like the option of having a half / press shutter - or not. If I get the G9 I would have the focus assigned to a separate fn button. Maybe one of the two front right side buttons ( the top 3 are hard wired ) I would also prefer changing the left / upper corner preview button over to the the right - for my right thumb or finger. Could yo look into your G9 & see if this can be done ? Thanks

    • @TWIP
      @TWIP  Před 6 lety +1

      Hey Ray, I just had a look for you. You CAN assign focus to one of the two front right-side buttons. But it looks like the left/upper preview button is not editable. However, the button right next to it Fn3 (default assigned to toggle through EVF modes) IS editable.

    • @rayjenkins2754
      @rayjenkins2754 Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks for cking. Having the preview button placed where it is might be a small oversight by Panasonic. If one has a substantial telephoto lens ( weighty ) the left hand would need to remove it's support of that lens in order to press the green preview button. I was hoping it could be re-placed for the right hand.

      You might try this for ch-ing the playback button location.
      menu - go to 3rd line option - select operation - go to 3/6 page & select FN button set up
      select setting in REC mode - highlight the Fn 1 or Fn 2 button
      on page 16/17 select Red/Playback switch & that's it.
      A kind fellow at our local camera store used a demo G9 & found this. Thanks

    Great overview! I’ve just acquired a G9 (in 2023) as an upgrade and I’m blown away after only a few days.
    I’ve overcome the sensitive shutter button by setting up Back Button Focus (thanks Marlene) and the front function lever to switch from LMonochrome to Vivid Colour on the fly. Also upped the firmware system to 2.7. Exciting times. Thanks✌️

    I've only owned a few cameras, but the G9 is the best I've owned. I sold my Nikon D500 and lenses a few months ago and switched to the G9. There are only a few specific instances where I miss the D500, mainly the autofocus in strong backlight was more consistent and noise above iso 3200. In all other ways, the G9 seems like a solid upgrade. The stabilization is amazing, and allows me to keep the iso lower in cases where the subject isn't moving too much.

    Very nice review. Features outlined quickly and to the point. Having just gotten my G-9 last week and puting it through its paces. I must agree, this is probably one of the best cameras I have used in almost 50 years of shooting. Last time I was this excited about a camera was when I bought the very first Auto Focus SLR, Minolta's Maxxum 7000 back in 1985.

      Yes, you heard correctly. I also own the GH5 and I have positioned it "mentally" as my "video-centric" tool, and the G9 as my "photo-centric" tool. A match made in heaven.

  • @terencekearnscreativeenter9532

    This camera is an ABSOLUTE BEAST. I've only had it for a couple of weeks. I normally thorouly research everything before I drop that kind of cash and invest so much time. But this thing keeps surprising me all the time. I keep discovering new stuff and I find myself grinning like an idiot each time LOL! The manual is useless. It doesn't do it justice.

      I don't think so Trooper. I don't know, but it seems like Panasonic should be able to do something via a firmware update. • @arielrglaze
    @arielrglaze Před 5 lety

    No, I did not guess it (nightmode) lol. I’ve to say Fredrick, this review you made makes me realize that we live in a post CanNikon world where Full Frame is no longer the “holy grail” or even the sweet spot between performance and image quality.
    Panasonic has made incredible strides with the help of those great lenses even for a micro 4/3 sensor (where Nikon failed with their Cx series). I personally switched completely to Fuji X early this year and I haven’t missed my D750 or my Z7, thanks to Fuji’s great lenses. And Sony has left Nikon/Canon crying mama.
    Bottom line, Panasonic, Sony, Fuji, iPhone, Samsung, this is a new world where everyone can pick what they like and be individual. Gone is the iron throne of photography (The Canon/Nikon standard).

    After 10 minutes I was used to the shutter button. I can't understand why it's mentioned in all reviews. Maybe it's because I have not the biggest hands. Yes, the body is big compared to a still very good OM-D EM5 MkII or so, but because of the size it's a serious tool again. In terms of image quality I compared it to a Nikon D750. Unfair? Not at all! In real life I couldn't see any differences even at ISO6400 in the darkness. And yes the EVF is just great!

    • @TWIP
      @TWIP  Před 6 lety +2

      Agreed Stefan, the sensitive shutter just takes a little getting used to. But initially it's just not what we're used to. I actually like it now. When our complaints come down to minuscule things like shutter sensitivity it's a good sign the rest of the camera is amazing.

    I know that this video is over a year old, but I have a question. I am looking for something to shoot aviation (airshows and Jedi Transition) and birds of prey in flight with. I have a Sony A7iii, and with the 70-300mm lens, I simply wasn't getting enough reach. I could get this camera plus a 100-300mm (200-600 full frame equivalent) lens for about $1000 less than the cost of a Sony 100-400 G Master lens, but it would mean that I would be carrying a separate camera and lens solely for one purpose.
    Is the autofocus on this suitable (fast enough and accurate enough) for aviation & birds in flight photography?

      Hi R Hogarth - the AF seems more than fast enough for me using the 12-35 I have on the camera most of the time. But I can't vouch for aviation and birds in flight photography. That'd require glass that I don't own, plus I've never shot that subject matter before.

    Yes, there is a 30Min Video Recording Limit on HD Video, & 10min Limit On 4K Video
    Do to due to sensor heating in poor design of reducing heatsink mass?

      This review is 3 years old, and my G9 is still my favorite camera. And I am NOT a "CZcamsr selling to amateurs", there are no affiliate links associated with this video. If I cared about high-iso (or shooting wildlife) I'd pull out my full-frame Lumix S1. There is no one-size-fits-all camera - yet.
      Sounds like you are basing your opinion on micro-four thirds solely on your experiences with the GH5. Have you even TRIED the G9 yet? Or have you dismissed all m43 cameras based on your experiences with one. What's that... "sensorism"?

      Two completely different cameras for completely different purposes. Use your brain please.

      and you have to deal with one of the worst menu systems on the market and lug around MASSIVE and heavy lenses. Apples to Oranges. This panasonic uses very small lenses

      I have both the a7iii and the G9 - the Sony is raw, wildly capable, with crude usability. The G9 oozes finesse, ruggedness, intuitive usability. The camera shift between A & B cam depending on what task I have for the day. The G9 does Trick shots and telephoto. The a7iii does gimbal work, low light, and general video. They overlap on portraits with the G9 being my favorite despite the fact that even kitted out with a nocticron the Sony outperforms it by being smaller, less expensive with the 1.8, lighter, better eye tracking, and slightly higher IQ.

      Sir Lancelot agreed. Just a shame the G9 is not great for landscapes which is what I shoot most.

      And you forgot the cost of the lenses for that Sony?
