The Rolling Stones - Miss You Drum Cover (6-Year YouTube Anniversary)

As I celebrate my 6-year anniversary on CZcams today, I thought I would do a drum cover that worked specifically on feel, groove and pocket, which is something I have been evaluating a lot lately on my playing as I have a major tendency of playing more on top of the beat too much. So to help me develop that laid-back feel more, here is my drum cover of The Rolling Stones' Miss You.
I chose this song because Charlie Watts is just grooving along on the song so steadily, so minimally that he is just letting his amazing pocket and four-on-the-floor stomp provide the groove and danceability of this great song. Now the version presented here is the 12" disco remix version which adds extended parts, guitar solos (not sure if it's Keith Richards or Ron Wood doing those), an electric piano breakdown and extra words sang by Mick during his 'rap" part in the middle. It really is a cool, amazing version. Also, on here, you can really hear Bill Wyman's incredible bass lines which also made the song groove and set the template for other rockers going the disco route during this time period (late 70's).
For 8.5 minutes I am just sitting on the groove and I am ok with that. A little flourish on the splash and hi-hats during the electric piano breakdown is the extra things I've added, but overall I am just staying out of the way. A couple fills and cymbal hits too might be heard here and there but to me the groove and pocket is the important part for me on this one.
So a couple extra musicians are featured on the track as well, including Sugar Blue on harmonica, Ian McLagan on electric piano and Mel Collins on tenor sax. Also, there are extra words Mick says/raps during the song's middle breakdown:

I really enjoyed playing along to this one although I am not really doing much, but I really dig this version of Miss You. A lot better than the regular version found on their Some Girls album. And I can see why this song was a bit hit. Just a great feel to it and the right tempo too (110bpm I believe). Not too fast, not too slow--just right. All of that made this their last #1 song on Billboard here in the States.

Congrats on your anniversary, whatever the date was😉I did watch your premiere video just after this and it's cool. Don't know the song but I like it. The first video I found from you on youtube was your Twisted Sister cover "We're not gonna take it". Looked at your channel, watch a couple more vids and subscribed. Ah, so that's the video that made you subscribed. Honestly, I didn't think that cover would blow up as it has as I saw other cats who did it and had more views at the time. Cool that you saw my very first cover as well--it's an obscure song from an obscure band who were like the Canadian version of Heart (female lead singer, female guitar player). Heard of that song through the early MTV days and it stuck with me. I guess I wanted to start my channel off on a "easier" rockin tune than doing a Rush tune right away, lol! Yeah, 6-years is not your typical anniversary celebration (as compare to 5 or 10 years, lol) but I knew I posted my very first one around this time so it gave me an excuse to have others check it out (clickbait I think it's called, Haha!). Thank you. Glad the intro wasn't too long winded, haha or overly technical. And you are correct that that broken eighth note pattern on the hi-hat can be deceptively tricky. But once yu get used to it, it becomes a breeze, lol. Always appreciative of your support--thank you!

That's cool I try to mix it up too. You have a lot of good music on your channel. I did Gimme Shelter a year ago and I was real happy with how it came out. That might be a good one to work on your pocket too. I like the hit hat part on that song. Happy new year 😎🥁🎵
There was a lot of explanation in the beginning, and quite honestly, I don't understand what half of that was about. When I play a cover, I try to own it and not do exactly what the drummer in the original song is doing. You know, like #Metallica in #GarageDays.

Haha, yeah, I guess I can be too overly technical (wordy) at times but the gist being that I need to work on my timing and tempo--but I think it's working. Yeah, the ekit is sitting there waiting to be recorded and as you can see to my left I do have a tablet ready to capture the sounds, but I am still not getting good levels--yeah, I know, excuses, excuses, lol! Anyway, always appreciative of the cool feedback from you!
