Here is a woman that stood up to the suits (not just men but women too), took control of her career, sacrificed sales and popularity to stay true to her work and vision ... and is rarely recognized for her work or for the fact that she is still going strong despite any support from Radio or a strong commercial outlet .. SHE deserves all the life time achievement awards that the Music Industry has to offer - She is Rock n' Roll Royalty and She is Pop Culture ... She is, Cyndi Lauper.

I like Cyndi. However, I cannot call her a legend like Madonna (not a fan). She had her time in the 80s but she hasn’t had any big hit for decades. Being ‘alive’ doesn’t make her a legend.
There's loads of things that justify calling her a legend. For example, she's the first female solo composer who's won a Tony award for best score of a musical.
I don't think you need a continued big hits to he deemed a legend. Her influence is vast, from Lady Gaga to Nicki Minaj, so many modern popstars have been impacted by her work. Her blues album was the highest selling blues album of 2010 and spent 13 weeks at #1 on the Blues Charts, she won a Tony, Grammy and Olivier Award for composing Kinky Boots by herself, her memoir was NY times Bestseller and she was recently inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame
