  • Ok, I've been on a 1960's Pop listening binge of late so I've decided to cover this cool tune from The Turtles called Elenore.
    Never thought much of this song before, but I got a new lease on it when I saw a CZcams video of The Turtles performing it live with the great John Barbata on the drums. I love the groove, shuffle beat of the song plus the pretty heavy fills on the song that he did. Here I replicate a majority of the licks while adding a little neat fill and a flourish of my own (which I'll admit I nicked from John Barbata himself from that CZcams vid!). Can you find where in the song I do my "own" thing?
    This song was a surprise hit for the band considering it was supposed to be a satire/parody of their biggest hit--can you guess which song this was supposed to poke fun at? Thus, the irony of Elenore being a hit. Also, this song features use of an early sound from an instrument that was just coming out at the time that would be known commonly by its inventors name. Can you guess that instrument?
    Ok, I am peppering this description with some cool trivia and questions that if you can answer correctly in the comments below, you will get a cool something from me. Also, it'll help me know who actually reads these. So good luck!
    Hope you dig this one--I did a lot! A very fun song to play even though it is considerably short. But you know as they say, short but sweet!
    So until next upload cats, take care of yourselves. Stay healthy and safe!

    I've loved this song from the first time I heard it while I was in college. I have long admired the composition (despite it being a spoof) and the soaring performance -- the harmonies, the dynamics, the tightness. But I admit that in all my listenings, I never noticed how much the drumming added to the drama of the song. Thanks for showing how it was done, Jorge,

    Love this song so much, and only recently realized John Barbata was a huge reason why. I searched CZcams thinking there might be more live Turtles than the one vid from Kraft Music Hall. And then I found you, completely crushing it! Well done!

    Oooh! Let me try and answer the questions if someone hasn't already! They were parodying their own song "Happy Together" and the early sound of a Moog Synthesizer was used . Just right before Keith Emerson and The Beatles got their hands on one! Did I win? ;) I'm a big fan of this song and John Barbata. Him, Carmine Appice, and The Rascals' Dino Danielli are some of the 60's American greats in the drumming community!

    There's a cool drum part here, along with the vamping on the keys it IS the song. Oh yea vocals yadda ;)
    But I imagine this is a hard gig for a player over 50 years later, getting into the seat of this young star in The Turtles. Where's his head at?
    So I would have thought a lighter treatment, but I see all the business that needs doing demands quite a firm approach.

    Songs were really short back then. I had no idea this was a parody as, even with the rather empty lyrics, it fits within the timeframe. Not sure about the instrument but the only one that is known by its inventror that comes to mind would by Hammond. Althought I'm not sure I hear it in this song. Cool look with the jacket.

    • @JorgeStJorge
      @JorgeStJorge  Před 3 lety

      Thanks so much Michael and glad you read the description! Yeah, believe it or not this was a song that was to parody their big hit Happy Together but then they heard that Elenore had hit potential and then released it to success as well. Ironic, huh? Unfortunately, Hammond is not the answer but the Moog (which you can hear in the first half of the 2nd verse). Nice try though! Appreciate the support!
