On today’s FD Explained, we take a look at how Brighton manager Graham Potter has become the most exciting English coach in football.
On the 22nd February 2018, Swedish minnows Östersunds beat Arsenal 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium in the second leg of their Europa League last-16 tie. It wasn’t enough to overturn their 3-0 loss in the first leg, but it did announce a rising star to the wider football world. Almost four years later, and Graham Potter is now an established Premier League manager, leading one of the divisions’ most progressive sides in Brighton and Hove Albion, and gaining high praise from both Jürgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola, who has described his sides as “a joy to watch and analyse”.
He has recently been linked with the Man United job, and has also been tipped to succeed Gareth Southgate as England manager. But is his excellent work at Brighton enough to secure one of the biggest jobs in the sport? Let us know your thoughts down below!

Exactly, it's a shame that typical English Managers like Sean Dyche, SouthGate etc really like that old school defensive football more and haven't really moved on from it nor have they tried to reinvent themselves. This is a manager and club that has both feet firmly on the ground. They were interested in Andre Ayew last year. Ayew was probably the best player in the Championship; but they didn't want to sign him for 90,000 pounds a week, based on the reports. This would suggest that few if any at Brighton is earning that salary. Considering this, Brighton and Potter have worked wonders.

Yeah. And you all keep speaking he's overrated. I just see what his team does on the pitch. It's almost like playing FIFA. He is doing in England exactly what he did in Sweden. And I always will remind how Klopp and later Tuchel became managers of Borussia Dortmund. Don't you see Potter's career path is somewhat similar? Even if he succeeded in a championship like Sweden, which is far below the class of the Championship, it's still a success. So what do you need more to be proven he is a classy manager that deserves a bigger club?

No one deserves anything, to get a big job you have to be at the right place at the right time. Another thing is Dortmund and German clubs in general have no issues giving young managers a chance, with the riches of premier league clubs they have the option to go for manager who’ve actually won trophies in big leagues which potter has not. So really he is competing with title winners like tan Haag and emery for the next big job, clubs don’t look at the fact wether he deserves it or not. ultimately clubs will pick proven winners over him unless they are going for a rebuilding job or looking to give their young players a chance which again comes back to being at the right place at the right time.

So that needs to change! Managers have one thing up and that is tha they can build clubs from the start, again I place Klopp as an example. Mainz were a mid-table Bundesliga 2 club when he retired. They immediately appointed him manager, two years later - 10th in the Bundesliga 1. Borussia Dortmund, on the brink of adminstration, even Rummenige gave them €30,000,000 to pay their debts. Three years later - Bundesliga champions. Potter is like Klopp - a team builder. The future belongs to this type of managers.

He's certainly a Man with a very educated plan. He will go to higher places. If he likes a big challenge, then there's a very good chance he will go to United.

@@spd-kv6sd potter is nothing like klopp. As you say klopp got the dortmund job when they were in serious financial trouble. When jurgen was done he had 2 league back to back league titles and champions league final and 2 cups. Which is why he got the liverpool job and was linked with all the big jobs in the planet. Wtf does potter have. Very poor comparison. There are millions like potter that build young exiting teams. Only the very best actually go all the way and win with those teams.
