One of the most talked about managers in world football today, Erik Ten Hag’s work with Ajax has seen him linked with almost every elite club in Europe. And this season finally feels like it could be his last. Following the untimely and rather embarrassing departure of director of football Marc Overmars, one of the key components of the operation which has helped him achieve such great success at the Johan Cruyff Arena, now could be a good time for him to seek a new challenge.
And with rumours that Mauricio Pochettino could leave PSG in the summer, Man United on the search for Ralf Rangnick’s successor, Borussia Dortmund yet to consistently impress under Marco Rose, and even a club like Real Madrid rumoured to be assessing potential alternatives to Carlo Ancelotti, he may have no shortage of options come the end of the season. With recent polls showing United fans overwhelmingly preferring Ten Hag over the Premier League-proven Pochettino, it’s clear his stock is at an all-time high.
But what makes Erik Ten Hag such an enticing managerial prospect? And how did he become the manager he is today? On today’s EFD Explained, we’re going to find out..

I think Ten Hag will leave after this season but not necessarily because of Overmars. I actually expected him to leave after last season because he's had massive success with Ajax for 2.5 seasons at that point and he really deserves a step up in my opinion. For whatever reason, he wanted to continue his success with Ajax for another season but everyone knew he'd be out of the Netherlands sooner rather than later. I'm convinced he would have left after this season even if Overmars had still been there.

What people forget about Ten hag (as amazing as he is) is that he describes himself purely as a coach , he puts his trust in the people above him to make all the footballing decisions , he's not as hands on as other managers. So unless the people making sporting decisions at United miraculously change the way they operate, this could be a recipe for disaster.

Man Utd need an identity and also DEEP squad overhaul and getting rid of overpaid deadwoods. Something that require at least two seasons which Ten Hag will need full backing from United hierarchy. At United, he will need to coach, manage locker ego and attend hostile press conference. Its a high pressure demanding job. Hope for the best....

I'd really love to see him feel comfortable enough with the replacement of Overmars to stay at Ajax one more year to have another chance to make a deep UCL run, and hopefully pull off the feat of getting Ajax back to the final. As far as where I think would be the best fit for him once he leaves... I think he would be the best choice of an heir apparent to continue the culture City have built with Pep over the past handful of years. His philosophy would fit well with the talented roster City already have, he'd have an excellent academy to develop young talent in, and he'd have an exceptional operational and organizational culture backing him.

    • @cheerios2834

I can actually see this happening. I don’t support Man United but would like to see him there although now I think he’d be a better fit at City given they’re already familiar with that style of play. Poch probably would be a better fit at United because he counter attacks and his system suits players like Rashford, Sancho etc. also Bruno would be a bit like an erikson player which would be great to see

Personally I'd love to see him revolutionise the culture at a club, so having the full backing to do it, but not at a club where he'll fit like a glove. Not sure what the best club would be though. I'd love to see him at Benfica, and do there what he did at Ajax, but that's because I'm a Benfica fan, and also I don't think with the current institutional structure he'd be able to.

They will have a target on their back regardless of any managers they to link with United In future.
With that being said even If they pick Poch, there is no guarantee Poch will be sacked by PSG. We have heard players and directors being cut off from the club In the summer, but Poch isn't one of them. And If Untied does sign Ten Hag, I don't see PSG sacking Poch unless they have a better replacement. Which at the moment it dosen't seem they do.
And If he stays, he would have to win Champions League 3 times with PSG for him to be called an elite manager.

Erik ten haag's only major weakness is that, he isn't good with substitutions, whether they be for injury prevention or for immediate impact. That isn't such a huge problem when it's Ajax that's dominating a league, but if he joins somewhere like man United who's fighting for top 4 right now, it might have a greater impact on results of the games in the last 20 mins in a league as taxing on players such as the premier league

I think him and Guardiola are pretty overrated as a manager. Ajax in eredivisie is already a juggernaut so practically they expect to challenge and even winning the title every season. As for Guardiola well we already know his story. I think United would be better of with a manager like Klopp or Tuchel. Because I don’t think Zidane is interested.

There goes the over-hyping of a manager by English press about a manager whose yet to prove himself on the Big stage. Don't get me wrong Ten Hag plays nice football, a poet of the game but he hasn't been able to do that and win. He bottled the champions League Semi-Final when they lost to Spurs and Ajax has always been winning the league and cups in their before Ten Hag so I don't see him as proven winner. In the words of Jose there are many poets in football but poets don't win trophies with the exception of Pep and Klopp.
