    I was looking for a way to simulate paper grain texture for a "printed" look. Your image is quite dark so it's difficult to tell that this setup alters the colors, although very lightly. I found that if you plug the noise texture into fac, enable color ramp for the noise texture and make the slider use constants, the texture now acts like mask. This results in the white stop in the noise texture's color ramp becoming an opacity slider for the effect. This way adding the noise won't alter the image colors. This is more visible in very light images. Just wanted to mention in case anyone finds it useful.

    Awesome! I had no idea you could do that in Blender, but I just started using it only a month or two ago. Thanks for sharing!

    What I do for that is denoising directly in the compositor and setting a mix color node to mix the original image with the denoised one, so I got a final image 60-70% denoised. This way I don't denoise to renoise afterwards.

    Thanks Kai. I played around with it a bit and found if you duplicate the texture node that is linked to the noise texture so you have 3 total and then scale them all a bit differently, and then plug them into the rgb inputs of a combine color node and then blur a little bit, you'll get a more realistic result!

    Such an operation is akin to adding noise to the image. to achieve this effect, i might as well turn off the denoiser during rendering. However, the grain effect obtained this way is very different from that of a real sensor.

    Overlay makes the grain too black and multiply messes with the exposure. Screen also shows black grain. Any suggestions on how to make the grain look more like the white and black noise on other settings without messing with the luminance of the image?
    Thank you for the vid BTW!
    Edit: I downloaded a better film grain image from adobe stock images. It looks much better than the built in one.

    If you would want that for a movie sequence. Any way of doing that? I guess the image texture would have to randomise for every frame somehow?

    Can you keyframe the grain to get stronger or weaker in a motion tween?

    • @seriousbeing7328
      @seriousbeing7328 Před rokem +1

      Yes, you can keyframe the Factor of the mix node in the compositor.

  • @colly6022

    couldnt a more authentic film grain effect be created by blending the grain texture with a blurred version of the base image by some factor, before blending it with the base image again? since film grain is not actually just darker spots, but actually captures light at slightly different angles inside a film camera. if you take a video of a red ball in a room with a film camera, you might notice the specs around the ball are not just darker, but also slightly redder.

    i think i havent able to figure out is how to use compositing if i am rendering multiple frames into png for a video, how do i apply this compositing setting in all of them

    • @JosuRibeiro
      @JosuRibeiro Před rokem +1

      You only work on compositing once, all renders of all frames will obey the settings from compositing. Test it out and you will see that at the end of each rendering frame, Blender will add the compositing as a last step before it starts on the next frame.

    Does CZcams compress this film grain effect? I’ve heard some video editors say that CZcams makes the video with film grain look worse because it compresses it

    • @zaneberry
      @zaneberry Před rokem +2

      if you export your video as DNXHR DNXHD or Pro res and upload to youtube the grain will survive but it will make your file huge so you should prepare for a full day of uploading

    or just remove the denoiser
