- Traxion.GG has been lucky enough to sample a preview build of EA SPORTS WRC, Codemasters’ follow-up to the excellent DiRT Rally 2.0.
It’s a new era for the developer, as it switches from its proprietary Ego game engine to Unreal Engine, taking over the WRC licence from Kylotonn to boot.
It’s a bold move, but does it pay off? Well, Traxion’s very own rally driver in waiting John Munro takes to the stages to offer his opinions, based on years of playing all the top rally titles - including the pinnacle of rally simulation, Richard Burns Rally.
Will EA SPORTS WRC be peerless, like Sébastien Ogier on Rally Germany, or hopeless, like Derek Bell on the RAC Rally? Have a watch and let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Never get overly excited for an EA game pre release
Name one Codemasters Rally Game that was anything below great... case closed... Codemasters doesn't release mediocre rally games... PERIOD
@@nikosfotidas8543 I mean... Dirt 4 and Dirt 5? They weren't horrible, but they were both generally considered to have pretty subpar launches. Dirt 5 especially was really underwhelming.
I guess a little caution is ok and necessary. I did put too much trust in CDPR for making Cyberpunk 2077 everything you'd have hoped it to be. turned out to be a complete disaster. of course this is a heavy example but it still shows a little scepticism is always good. I'll wait for it to launch and see how it does the first week.

@@PIECEofTOAST That's because nobody asked for Dirt 5, we had enough rally games and we had Forza Horizon 4 & 5, which was basically superior to Dirt 5, that the devs didn't see that coming I don't understand.
For the settings all being on medium, it looks pretty good.. I'm so excited to drive the gallant.
Here's hoping it'll look this good on PS5.

I didn't see any spectators on the stages. And shame we don't control the car after finish line, when it just goes where it want.

Agree, I usually do the doughnut after the finish line in Dirt4.
I think its because hes testing it in time trial mode. Dirt rally 2.0 does the same thing in time trial.
It goes slow mo after the finish cos it's time trial mode. It does the same thing in DR 2.0.
I've been a rally fan since the early 1990's and played more 'rally-racing' titles, over the years, then I care to admit.. I gotta say, even with the minor hiccups and issues - which every game has, this truly might be the best, truest, most authentic rally game ever made. I sincerely hope it hits hard like all these previews, as I've been pretty amped up for this title.
After what dirt rally became after getting EAified, I wouldn't count on it.

Wow, i'm just at 7:00 and from what ive seen, this looks so good! The car behaviour, the graphics on medium looking way better than dirt rally 2.0 on high or even max, the sound, cockpit materials, the feeling of the car you're describing, man, I haven't been this excited in a long time!
How on earth do you figure that? Did you actually play dirt rally 2.0?

If the degradation model keeps these marks and adds more as more drivers pass over then this is BY FAR the best and most realistic rally game of all time...
triple support, FOV setting and the ability to hide the steering wheel should be standard at this point in racing games

Unreal IMHO, has always been the bells and whistles engine that not only fail to deliver on performance, but bells and whistles themselves.
It could be worse, they could use Bethesda antique creation engine.
Thanks for the vid. broadbent only tried tarmac with an old car while I wanted to see gravel and modern WRC. You also answered a lot questions.

IMO this is a must own title. Haven't been this excited for a rally game for a very long time. Absolutely LOVING the inclusion of the Astra as well. Such a cool car, easily forgotten in more illustrious company
For me it was megane, cordoba, colin R4 (omg that one!!!!) and the xsara…. Wish dr2.0 had it
I am SUCH a sucker for the details and I'm geeky out over the little bits of dirt on the alcantara dashboard 😂 I loooove the way this game looks
I've been waiting for this new version of Dirt Rally for quite a long time, and am quite impressed with this preview.
As Indonesian im very happy you testing the Pacifico rally, so we can see how it looks

Great video, many thanks for the preview, you mention graphics performance issues, I think you mentioned stuttering, have to say your video makes it look really good, it would be most helpful if you could give us an idea of what sort of frame rates you're getting with the 3090 and also what's the resolution you are using.

This is using Unreal engine so i'm 99% sure there will be performance / stuttering issues in the final build.

Wow, how far games have come. Glad you kids are getting efficient Rally games these days. Do you have to work so much harder playing rally games today?, compared to our "arcade" racers back in the day.

Strange feeling when watching replay....it feels like the car is floating on the road.
Hopefully we get TrackIR support. After getting used to NeckFX in AC, I cant really deal with sliding around on a fixed camera

The vegetation looks nice. Wish you could see some of the surface information transfer to the car body through vibrations and such.

@@0thers1d3 That's because there is no detail to the surfaces to translate. They're all super flat.
Yes this is my biggest issue with it. It looks like the cars are hovering and not reacting to an uneven bumpy off road track the way they would in reality. It's a serious problem and most people are not noticing it.

You should of used same car on tarmac as you did the gravel to have a true comparison of feel.
Pre-ordered the game for PS5. Can't wait to play it :)
1. Hope swingman is as good as in Dirt 1 & 2
2. Hope we can save replay's
3. Hope we can race online championships with different classes, Dirt 2 example H2 FWD vs H2 RWD cars
4. Hope of me jumping the gun against my better judgment to not pre-order does not bight me as it did with PC 1 and 2
5. Hope a 3080ti laptop version is decent play
6. Hope stages are not repeated or less repeated than D 1 & 2
7. Hope I have time to play it
8. Hope career mode is good
9. Hope for a Traxion FWD champ
10. Hope that my hopes are not broken.

Oh boy!! Nice video, I’m excited for this. Dirt Rally 2.0 was my absolute favorite game and with this Title coming out, I plan on dropping the controller and getting a DD wheel
Don't go instantly from controller to DD wheel. I recommend getting a cheaper, gear/belt driven wheel first. Starting from a DD wheel is gonna be too BRUTAL, which might quickly turn you off.
@@sebastianzarek7056 He can always turn the FFB down if its too strong which I doubt it will be especially if its just a 5nm CSL DD

@@graeme111 maybe you're both right. When I started there were no options like CSL DD or Cammus C5. Still. No point in buying an entire sim rig with wheel, shifter, handbrake when you might aswell quit after a week
Maybe my minds been changed. Visually the handling of the cars looks impressive.
Thanks for the review i'm getting more hyped the closer release gets. I'm a little disappointed the tarmac you still feel disconnected from the track as you do in previous games but overall it's an exciting time to be a rally sim fan.
Textures looked better this time around. Physics still look off and like there are assists on maybe.

Looks great for being on medium and you have made a better "deep dive" then any other video out there.
The only thing I will complain about tho, Is the replay. Camera options and how the camera is following the car is to stiff. It's like there is no human behind that camera.
And the car sound in the replay sounds off and goes quiet too quickly. And there is like no echo to the car sound aswell. Just quiet, Then more car soun to quiet again as it drives by.
Man I can’t wait to drive the astra. Last I’ve seen it was in the rally championship games
Very nice insight, im excited to say the least. Im a big DR2 and enjoyed elements of the old wrc games. This looks like best of both with lots of refinement

How is the weight, momentum, braking distance, and weight transfer - compared to 2.0? These things were actually really good in WRCG. I am hoping this game is at least as realistic and believable. And is the handbrake a 'magic slide button' like in DR2.0, or is real finesse needed to use it?
WRC 9 is my favorite rally game by far. We'll see if this one can match it. Although I'll have to get my wheel out from under the pile of crap in the garage.
It does look like the best ever Codemasters rally game, which is great on its own, but you can surely see some codies quirks. Tarmac is probably miles better than in DR2, but I still didn't see a single understeer moment there, only 4 wheel slide. And IDK if the actual physics are better than replays, but I also saw classic codies no-bodyroll, no-suspension type of movement.
Overall it does look like a pretty good game. I can see the improvement in speed, because in DR2 even the R5 cars were rocketships which they aren't supposed to be.
I am stoked for the release! I am one of the preorder fans from DR2.0 and I have been waiting since I caught wind that they were going to get the licence to do it! With they way game dev's have been releasing unfinished works lately I and being a fanboy of codemasters I have high hopes this will be the game of the year!

Hello, thank you for this video. I would like to know what are the optimal settings in game and on the wheel (fanatec dd pro 8nm) to best use for this game?

I have a question about WRC there's a map from Dirt Rally 2.0 that I love so much but you would think I'm crazy as I raced it on a controller. The course in Catamarca Argentina the course with the very twisty bit on the cliffs. Is it in WRC? If not oh well.
Definitely pre-ordering. Was a little nervous due to some of the other reviews. Excited to log hours in a Cossie.

So yeah, pre-ordering THIS SPECIFIC GAME is a no brainer...
For a regular rally gamer to have one gripe, being lag on the hand movements, which you can switch off. I feel this is going to be a special game.

One thing I didn't like about DR 1 and 2 is how even modern cars felt a bit of a handful. You mentioned the flow you felt driving an unknown car and road combo and looking at how these are driven in real life and how quickly they react to little steering input, even on gravel, I felt it wasn't well replicated in those older games.
I wonder if DR suffered a bit from the "hard = realistic" problem or if WRC made some things easier to welcome new people to the genre.
i don't think dr was that "hard", but the cars felt weightless and hesitant to change direction. in a way hard = realistic, but the cars should also be driveable. i'm a bit worried about these new tarmac physics since tarmac was pretty undriveable in dr1 and 2. i hope the ffb actually feels better this time than rbr. in dr the cars gave information about surface to the wheel, but still somehow felt disconnected from the road. i really want this game to be good since there is no excuse why the feel couldn't be "hardcore" for wheel users but manageable for controller users with assists. i don't also care for graphics that much, mainly physics, but being a new sim/game, i feel the road surface actually looked better in dr2 for that matter.

My question to you as somebody that has enjoyed these game on and off in the past and as a bang average player is…
Is there the option for ‘flashbacks’ if you make a mistake throughout a stage? I previously stopped playing these games out of frustration of not being able to complete a tricky stage without completely resetting it
I don’t believe there is unfortunately. Might be an idea to turn down the damage so that although you still get punished for a mistake in terms of time, you can make it through to the end without getting massively frustrated. Not ideal though!

Rally Pacifico sells it for me. Finally, some great SE Asian locations to rally around. Day One.
The graphics look amazing!
Looks much better than the official footage. This game will be a 10/10 for me.
The wheel / arm animation not matching real life is an issue in dirt rally 2 if you do not set up the wheel base and game wheel settings to have correct rotation. He mentioned something about default used in video so I assume it’s same for this game once you set it all up properly it will match

@@YB4L_TV thanks. I feel like this is the issue, it def tripped me up first time I played DR2 with my then new DD Pro. I’m sure it’ll be similar fix once set up with this game
@TraxionGG at 8:00 you are talking about hands and wheel is not moving at the same speed as your wheel is because they are probablly using steering assist for you not knowing. How i know this is because for the past 6months i´ve been devloping my own game and by know know a few ins and outs for developing games and physics.
A bit left field, but I’d love to see Codemasters tackle a proper Trophy Truck/Baja game as well as a D1 Drift game.
7:30 This is a visuell input lag, just turning off V-Sync and capture the frames to 60 or to 144Hz should be fixing this issue.

I have never played a game where the hands kept up, I have learned to turn it off if possible, ignore if not. My biggest worry is I have an older PC with a 1070 card and triples. I never could get WRC to work on triples, DR 2.0 works pretty well but at a lower setting, I do get water splash and falling leaves. Still I bought it and I am looking forward to it.

Is it me or do some of the elements of the Chile stage look very similar to the Perth and Kinross stages from DR2.0, the logs and forest makeup look very similar.
Tbf watching the rally this year I did think in places it looked a bit like rally GB

Are there better cockpit view adjustment options than in previous DiRT titles? The seat adjustment options in DiRT Rally 1 and 2 were too limited and I've never been able to align the cockpit view properly with my sim rig. It drives me nuts and makes the game less enjoyable to play on a sim rig.
I can just about get dirt in kind of the right place, but if I remember correctly the height adjustment is just massively lacking range in comparison to anything else I play (I have a 55" screen right up against, and slightly lower than the wheelbase, and want to see the dashboard dials through my wheel)
@@Chuggnuts I have the exact same setup. I run a single 55" OLED and the main issue with DiRT was that the height and seat tilt options don't have a big enough range. From my perspective in my seat, it always felt like I was tilted too far forward in the seat and looking down on top of the dashboard. I have all my other sima dialed in with a perfect FOV and cockpit perspective so it's jarring to switch to DiRT and have it not be the case. I still love the game but the cockpit view pulls me out of it a little. I'm having the same issue with the new Forza as well.
@@HollisterMotorsport on a similar topic, I also don't understand why games put on screen menu buttons etc bottom centre of the screen, so they're completely obscured by your wheelbase if you run a similar setup to us (which I'm sure loads of people do)
