    It is a strange phenomena that a framed photograph on display that contains people smiling seems natural but a painting of the same is, by personal experience, very hard to live with after a while...... maybe because of size I don't know....

    • @jeffhreid
      @jeffhreid Před 5 lety

      ArcturusGold it is challenging to paint a smiling subject. Maybe because a painter usually won’t have a live sitter smiling due to the time required to do the painting.. it’s also interesting that when photography started you rarely saw smiling sitters, maybe because painted portraits didn’t have smiling subjects traditionally, now a smile is the norm for photos. Times change

    hi Ben..i was wondering..first of starting the portrait you made a sort of a coat of a grey kind of colour on to the surface of the canvas maybe for preparing it,what was that?thanks

    • @lustenhouwer
      @lustenhouwer  Před 8 lety +5

      +federico heidkamp Yes I prepare always the canvas with at least three layers of gesso. To that gesso I add a little bit of ivory black and yellow ocher (acrylics) to obtain a sort of off white.

    Your technique is of a Master, but the composition looks like a picture taken by a camera made in japan and not for a divine eye. I had a hard time finding a focal point or general theme. Maybe each family person could have handle an artifact accord to their personalities? or maybe wearing rare costumes (Like Rembrandt paintings)
