Eyes are never round, do not be afraid of darks, do not do lipstick lips, do not use black or blue they do not do the job, people start blending too early, if you see 100 paint 10. So much valuable advice! Dear Ben, I am very grateful to watch you and learn your lessons.
Thank you Judith.
Absolutely amazing advice i never would have known but are so useful, i learned so much valuable lessons in this one video.
if not blue then what
Nice blending colors mention almost kindly and how burshes be kept. And clean it with what
bloody hell you sound like you know what your talking about cheers mate.
It is so comforting to find actual professionals explaining how difficult achieving an outstanding result is.
Glad to hear you like it.
It's so cool to see it's like seeing magic
Wow, your brushwork speaks volumes but your explanations are the icing on the cake. Thank you kind sir.
Thank you so much
Mr. Lustenhouwer, it’s an honor to see you paint. Your skill, patience, and gentle tenacity in achieving what you want is a lesson for us all. Thank you for this wonderful portrait of your delightful granddaughter.
Thank you Judith
I love everything about this. The calm way you explain your process, your loose painterly style, the focus on simple blocking in of shapes and approximations of local color/value, and (being a guitarist myself) the short break to play some Blackbird (one of my favorites to jam out on). This is how I like/want to paint. Thank you.
You are welcome.

I always wanted to try painting portraits, I’m scared to ruin it. Your teaching motivates me to give it a try. You’re an excellent teacher. Thank you Ben
Thank you Marie. Allow yourself to ruin a portrait. That is where you learn.
Andrew I just wanted to say that you're a true inspiration to everybody who loves painting. Your passion about all the tiny things around creating a beautiful piece is amazing and very inspiring at the same time. Watching you explain all those tricks and secrets that everybody hides is giving me the needed courage that i didn't have. You may not realize how much you're giving through your videos and appearance. The attitude about what you love is gigantic and resident. I love your style and paintings and really wish I could afford buying some of your pieces some day. I know that I am just another subscriber and just noone in the ocean of fans you have, and probably you won't even go through my comment, but in case you do, I want you to know that you've got a big fan out there from Bulgaria (oldest and most beautiful country in Europe) who supports you and who appreciates what you have been doing. As a starting self taught artist I find your content priceless. I would love to find out more about the lights you use in thr studio. The ones you use when paint and the other ones that create that warm atmosphere.
Andrew keep the good work up, stay safe and wish you much inspiration.
Greetings from Bulgaria!
Tank you. I do read all the comments. Kind regards.
Ben
I haven't painted in many years, but your videos are giving me courage. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful portraits and methods! ❤️
Thank you Elizabeth
I paint from foto three times
Good vedio
I also need to let go of the fear and just start, his tutorial will help a lot!
many thanks for the wonderful lesson: your teachings are precious. I wish to thank you for your generosity in sharing your art. Happy painting and happy life Master!
Thank you Marie Angela.
Very nicely done. What many accomplished painters miss when they do instruction videos is that novices, like me, need to see your palette and the reference photo so we can see what you're doing and why. Good job. I learned a lot.
So good to hear you learned from the videos!
This is probably the best teaching video ever made.
It can be used both to teach how to teach and how to make teaching videos on the highest level.
I make great art, but I do not make paintings like this. In the future, I will paint portraits, and I will copy all steps from the best teacher ever!
Thank you for your really kind words Jan. I is my pleasure.
I learnt so much. The tonal difference (more red for the middle of the face, more blue for the chin and more yellow for the forehead), the compas trick, the underpainting with acrylic... Goud waard :)
Dank je Roxane
this is so cute imagine your grandpa painting you 😭😭
This is wonderful. Thank you so much for showing how to start this painting from the planning stage. Watching you makes me want to paint. God bless you! So glad you are back!
Thank you Julie
My professor didn’t teach any technique, only critique. It disheartened me and took me years to pick up a brush again. Thank you for such a wonderful way for explaining. I know my skills are far from yours but the giant feels more conquerable this time around. ❤
This is probably one of the best videos I’ve watched so far. Really breaking it down and showing the process, especially showing your palette as you mix the colors and showing compared to the reference is soooo helpful. Really helps you learn how to get started.
So good to hear Lorea
This is the best tutorial I have seen. Exactly what I need to try & start oil painting. Thank you Ben for your generosity and excellent skills.
Thank you Marion.
How kind and generous of you to share your knowledge and amazing talent with the rest of the world. You have done some incredible reductionist work on the craft of painting while at the same time enhancing the artistic magic of the whole experience. I am grateful for every step you have talked us through, but in particular the use of the Gesso, the white spirit, the type/colours of paints and brushes and not least the gel and the subtlety of it uses - the hardware that underpins the personal marks of a painting. Sincere and grateful thanks. You have made me want to paint again!
Thank you for your kind words.
A sentence you said in several of your videos struck me: "you must be courageous". I wrote it on a watercolour paper, and surrounded her by beautiful colours. Four words, whit a great strength. This sentence has greatly changed my artistic advancement. As if,I welcomed a strong dose of courage and confidence. So now I have this quote in my workshop, from a master portraitist who has had a tremendous impact on my life as an beginner artist. A deep thank you Mister Lustenhouwer.

Thank you Danielle for your nice comment.
Best tutorial on portrait painting I have watched! Definitely will share this. Thank you! Great tips!
You ard welcome
Absolutely brilliant. Extremely instructive, in a way that is usually only found in live classes. Thank you for taking the time and energy to make this available to everyone. Your powers of observation for laying down shape and value are incredible, but what blew me away the most is your ability to observe a tiny spot of colour on your reference and then recreate it effortlessly for your canvas. Unbelievable.
A whole life painting.
I will watch it many times now to imbibe all the pearls which have been delivered by your masterly work , stay blessed sir!
Thank you so m much Shazad
THANK YOU for the encouraging lessons! You have shared your knowledge and experiences in a STEP by STEP .... You are my PORTRAIT PROFESSOR! dURING covid i HAVE COMPLETED 9 PORTRAITS ALL OF MY gRAND-CHILDREN WITH YOUR INSTRUCTION!!
Thank you Mary. So nice to hear!
Even though I paint in acrylic, the approach you teach and many of the tips are invaluable to me. Thank you, so much!
You are welcome.
My grandfather used to do oil paintings as a hobby and I used to watch him do them. I never had the courage to do oil paintings myself as it seemed a very time-consuming and expensive hobby, but your videos are helping me gather the courage to try! Thank you, Ben. Your paintings are wonderful.
Just give it a try Stella.
The paints are expensive however they last FOREVEEEEEVER just make sure u paint I'm a ventilated room because some paints, thinnersand even mediums can be toxic to breath in but honestly it's not when that extreme
I am so glad to see you back making video tutorials. I always enjoy watching and learning from you! I have been following you for some time! Please keep painting!! You are such an inspiration!
Thank you for your kind words
Je n'avais encore jamais vu une personne notamment un artiste être si généreux de conseils, vous êtes vraiment formidable!
Thank you Brigitte
It's amazing to see your approach and how you block the lights for the nose and right side of the face. You got the perfect volume for the face with so little information on the sketch.
Tank you Virgínia.
Thank you, Ben. That was a quite exceptional and exquisite portrait ... in fact it is my favourite so far. I learnt so much, just from watching it, and I shall do so over and over again in order to retain the valuable information you have provided. Your teaching method is so easy to follow and is very inspirational. I improve all the time with your masterful help.
Thank you Alan. So good to hear.
This is a fantastic lesson, a wonderful video tutorial about your method! Thank you so much for leting us learn from your Art with such Great Generosity! God bless you Ben!
Thank you Cristina, it is my pleasure
I am so glad you are back, Ben! Thank you for this complete step-by-step lesson. Very generous gift to all us.
You are welcome.
You are a really good teacher. you must have a kind heart..
Thank you.
thank you Ben Lustenhouwer for your portrait painting videos. So valuable to watch an expert painter create a portrait and explain which cool shades go where and which warm shades go where. The last time I had the chance it was Daniel Green's workshop and he passed away last year.
Thank you once again and also for your support!
So happy to see you back. Your videos are the reason I took on the challenge to paint portraits, using your color combinations which I would not have used if not for your teachings. Thank you so much
So good to hear Julie. Thank you.
Great painting tutorial! What interest me most in your painting videos is how you show your color pallette. That's why I watch them all the time. Thank you so much for sharing this awesome painting knowledge. I was wondering how it was going to turn out and it turned out so great. Beautiful painting style 👌.
Thank you Peter
What a talented painter, great teacher, and likable man. Best oil painting tutorial I’ve ever seen.
Thank you Kent
What wonderful the way you started the painting and took us through to the details. Yet staying painterly!
Really enjoyed it, thank you💖
Thank you Carol
Oh Ben this is a huge help! I can already see a great way to improve my own work from watching your video. I must now start making a quick color and composition study before I start my portrait, just to help me visualize in advance how my portrait might look. This will give me the confidence I lack and will help me to stop procrastinating because I will then have the confidence and enthusiasm, since I can see with my eyes the design for the whole painting & its colors. After that it will be easy to simply copy the whole idea into a realism style. I also love how easy you show us we can match flesh colors from a photo without guessing! A thousand thank yous Ben! God Bless You!
So glad you like the tutorial Joyce.
Wow, clearest instruction ever. I love the way you think out loud and do not get chatty. Thank you for this.
Thank you Tom.
Hartelijk bedankt voor deze uitgebreide video. Ik heb er veel van geleerd. Je hebt een prachtig kleinkind. Many Thanks for the wonderfull lesson.
Dank je Klaas. De video is eigenlijk nog niet officieel te zien, maar dat gaat binnenkort gebeuren.
I have just discovered your channel. It is amazing. I love how you take the time to show what you mean; for example the extra step where you show before and after the glazing touch ups. You are incredibly talented - thank you for sharing your insights; it is very inspirational.
Thank you Kim
Thank you Ben. So glad you’re back. You are very generous. God Bless you always❤️
Thank you Ana.
Thank you!
Oil will try it myself 😅👍
Thank you for showing us how to achieve a beautiful portrait with planning, having foundation colors mixed, keeping the early layers thin, then building, building up. I never went to art school, so your color mixing is valuable and key to achieving warm or cool areas. Everything you shared is quite beneficial. “Keep it simple,” is a great phrase to keep in my mind!! Huge thanks! God bless you and many years with your granddaughter!
Thank you Phillis, I am glad you liked it.
wonderful lessons .God Bless and Thank you
So amazing! Your painting so beautiful! Thank you for sharing your skills ! Great explanation, and great inspiration!♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️🎨
Thank you Lara
Thank you so much You are a great teacher. You look kind and generous and very good. You make me courage to paint.
It is my pleasure. Thank you.
Thank you for this generous sharing of your art !
By my good fortune, your videos were the first I studied when I started painting portraits about five years ago. I have watched many other teachers. But I only appreciate your methods all the more. I have been scared away from using turpentine in any part of the underpainting so I use Griffin quick-dry oil paints for that. This video is a great review of your earlier ones. I see now where I went wrong in my last painting.
Thank you Cheryl. I try to slowdown the drying time so I don't use mediums in the beginning that speed up
So wonderful to see a new tutorial. You are an excellent teacher. Thank you🙂
Totally agree
Thank you Melina
Thank you so much, Ben. Your generosity in sharing your experience is very much appreciated. I just started painting portraits (from landscapes). Your information (especially your paint color mixes) is invaluable. You are a wonderful teacher and I plan to watch all of your videos!
Thank you Mimi
I really cry!! Absolutly gorgeous calm soul. God bless YOU!❤
Thank you.

Mr Lustenhouwer you are an absolute breath of fresh air to listen to. I just love your approach and how you tackle your work. I enjoy listening, watching and i watch all your videos from start to finish. To be honest some other art/youtubers i watch i cant help myself but "fast forward" but you have so much to give when you paint and explain... you are a fabulous teacher and i am always excited to watch your stuff! thank you for the lovely video and your excellent commentary (you always give me a little laugh too lol)
Thank you for your nice comment.

Muchas gracias Domingo
This is awesome. I've been painting non stop as a kid but at some point forgot about my passion. Now that I've finished my PhD it came back full force and I just can't hold the brushes still. Sadly where I live there is nobody offering professinal instruction but thankfully there is youtube and masters like you sharing their knowledge. I really, really appreciate your calm and detailed explanations, they really help a lot!
Thank you so much.
I just love you! I get tickled how you say to your brush," more color I said" lol Thank you so much for teaching us amateur painters who want to learn and succeed in our journey to painting portraits!
I am so grateful! God bless! ❤️
Thank you Cathy for your kind words.
I haven’t found a better artist on CZcams since I found your channel Mr. Lustenhouwer. 🙂 I just love your style of painting! I’ve always wondered… Is there a specific name for the loose painting technique you use?
Thank you. I don´t really know a name.
It is very close to “alla prima”.
I struggle with “noodling” my paintings to death and ruining the freshness of the brushstrokes. I believe the trouble comes from not taking the time to block in with care. Can you explain more in depth how you simplify during the block in stage? For example, how do you decide what to leave out? What planes are most important during this stage?
And also, solutions for my issue. You briefly mentioned walking away from the painting more, and I know I could benefit from that.
As always, thank you.
Maybe in the future I will make a video on the topic on seeing the different planes to block in.
Here's a tip that I use... you can blur your vision and paint what you see
I didn't paint for 30 years. Always liked to do portraits since my childhood. Found your videos. Thank you very much for detailed explanation starting from mixing colors. It helped me to refresh forgotten. I have started to paint again! I would like more videos. I enjoyed watching.
See my channel for more.
Your painting process and demonstration with live commentary is astonishingly absorbing. Best I witnessed so far. Thanks.
Thank you.
I can’t describe the immense gratitude I have for you and your generosity. God bless you with happiness and everything you desire!

Thank you Aida.
Your ability to see color and create those colors is inspiring.
A lot of practice.
I really appreciate this video. I wrote down the main points in my sketch pad, and refer to them and this video when I need to. I spent about a year getting up to speed on my drawing ability, and came back to learn how to paint. Recognizing the subtle differences in values on the face and translating them correctly to the canvas is now my main focus. I get great satisfaction seeing a gradual improvement in my ability to convey a likeness. Thanks so much for offering these tips!
Thank you Brad . I am glad to hear you are improving. Keep up the good work
so happy to see you again painting a portrait!!!!!
thanks Liliana
I enjoy all your videos so much and love to hear what you are thinking as you paint. Glad to see you back.
