You are the only artist I watch on CZcams. I’ve recommended your videos to all my Oil Pastel Artist group members. The way you emphasize simplifying the details , the planes , the colors is priceless. I write down all your words of wisdom and save them. Thank you so much for sharing your amazing wisdom.
Thank you Carol. I am glad it is helpful.
A masterful and painterly rendering, as you moved through the facial tones , I swear she came to life and moved a bit , anyone else see that?
WOW! This video is so informative. I took a full page of notes, because I don’t want to forget anything you said. I just subscribed and I’m about to watch your entire channel. Thank you! You filled in so many missing pieces in my portrait painting knowledge today.
Thank you. Nice to hear Kristina. This week a new tutorial will be launched.
I keep going back and forth, squinting at the original image and as you paint, seeing the tones coming in.
Very cool
Thank you

I live by the wisdom of others.
The music you put in the background is so calming and reflective of your process. Thank you.
My cousin is the musician. I am glad he made this music especially for my videos.

Geen dank.
Hello Ben, I never comment on CZcams videos but I must say thank you. The amount of knowledge you pack into these videos is astounding and is inspiring me to try and take my painting to another level. I normally work from photos and so your advice on what to take and what to reject is priceless. I think any artist will smile at your advice to take a break - so many paintings damaged because of over concentration.
Glad you like them!
You are a master! Beautiful guitar music too!
Thank you so much 😀
I don’t know and have never heard of this man how come he feels like a dear friend already. Maybe because he put so much experience into so little time. A like is not enough Thank you !
thank you for your kind words
This man is so outstanding, he gives us all the secrets of painting for free!
I love him♥
Thank you Torsten
Thanks Ben, another great video packed with inspiring information. I've been a professional artist for over 20 years and find your style of work and sensible informative videos a joy to watch. I lived in Holland for 3 years and I recognise your neat, methodical approach as part of your DNA ! Lovely work.
Thank you.
Today I am starting a portrait having done a lot of them over the year and a half that I have been painting. This video is exactly what I needed as I have had a sense I am overdoing some of them. Thanks so much Ben for sharing your experience about that tendency. I will keep coming back to this clip and also explore your other offerings.
It is my pleasure. Keep painting.
I love the way you draw and express the painting
I was student in school of art and I think you are the best teacher I never met !
Thank you
Thank you so much. The tutorial, the music, the advice.
You're so welcome!
Thank you Ben. I feel I have reached a point in my art studies where my eye is pretty well trained and these extra insights you are freely giving are most appreciated.
I still realize how much I need to learn and it's also exciting that the knowledge we desire is infinite and can never be reached unless we lived a thousand lifetimes. So I'll just do my best in this one. Stay safe. Warms and cools😱🤣
My pleasure!
the way you talk, and the principles you share are very profound and memorable. Thank you very much for this amazing video.
My pleasure!
"It never can be too red" finally someone that gets it🖤🖤🖤🖤🖍️
yes!
Besides the wonderful painting and instructions, beautiful background music too.
Thank you very much!
Thus us only your second video I have watched and the emotion I feel as I watch them come to life is amazing. The explanations are so simple and easy to understand. I am guilty of trying to put to much detail in my paintings. Thank you so much. Now. On to watch another.
Welcome aboard!
Great video and instructions Ben. Thanks and you stay safe too!
Thanks, you too!
Absolutely fantastic lesson.... if only painting was TAUGHT like this in Tertiary settings.... I did printmaking after deciding that the “teaching” on offer was non existent!
Thanks!!!
Many thanks!
Gracias Alfonso
When you softened her left cheek, that’s the moment for me when it really came together, and couple little touches around her eye and the crease in her smile and the highlight on her nose, the greenish brown background with pinkish highlights on her face, and especially the more blueish background in front of her face is brilliant!
Jj
Thank you - you are an inspiration and you paint so softly.
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you so much, you are so gifted but wear it very lightly. Every video I watch, I learn so much.
Thank you Lucy
Thanks Ben, I learned much finer points here. Your suggestion of not going into too much of details in a portrait while working from a photo, makes sense, but hard for me what details to overlook and what to incorporate. I would love to try out different styles to get more depth in my portraits. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you, your directions are clear to fallow. I admired your skills. 🫶🏽🤲🏽🪷🌟
Thank you Carmen
How timely! I've been struggling with a self portrait I've been doing while in pandemic lock-down, I will definitely be trying this, with no ivory black in the shadows. Thanks for the great video!
Angus Timmons If u need a shadow to look more transparent, glaze something warm such as yellow or orange or a brown containing either. Its amazing....immediately the solid heavy stone feel of a dark mark becomes a shadow u can look into & through. Especially on skin. ✌🏻
@@friedricengravy6646 I'll give this a try too on an older portrait that never felt right in the shadows. Thanks!
Thank you so much for showing us your painting skills and even letting us to your color pallet. I love watching your painting videos and applying what I learn from you to my paintings. You're awesome!! 👌
Thank you Peter

I absolutely adore this master educator in painting. I wish I could take lessons in your classroom where you I can be corrected and guided by you. Some people are so great at what they do that they inspire you and bring out what your whole life think you didn't have. Kudos Mr. Lustenhouwer for the outstanding instructions.
Thank you so much Youcef for your nice words.
Again , you are an amazing painter. I’m so glad I came upon your videos. So now I’ll be binge watching for the rest of the weekend. Your ability to create the portrait with small strokes of paint placed just right is what takes my breath away. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you, I am glad it is helpful
I am just practicing fine art painting, so much to learn. Nice to have the time to study and explore. Great video, thanks.
Have fun!
Thank you so much for the amazing videos. They are helping me a lot to learn painting. Greetings from Brazil. Stay well! Beware!
Happy to hear that!
I really appreciate your teachings. They are so valuable. Thank you.
You are so welcome
Amazing how you simplify, the best part of a good teacher. Thank you Ben
Thank you.
very timely. I just finished a painting where her shadows were a value of 5 or 6. As i painted the cool side her shadow value was wrong value. I then started in with the old trying to make her exactly like her likeness. I measured and remeasured and still . Then i said this is a painting not a photograph.
Thank you , i think since i must have a tough time paying attention i will need to play your video before painting someone with a darker shadow. Another video with so many key points. Less is more less is more !!
Such a lovely painting Ben. Congratulations!!
Thank you for the great tutorial - I like the tip - if I´m strugling with a brown hue, work it towards red or greenish tint... :D Great!
Also I´ll keep in mind to mix the lights and shadows separately to avoid to make milky shadows.
Thank you and hugs from Brazil!!
Thank you! Cheers!
It is so kind of you to do this instruction to aspiring portrait artists and you demystify things very well
I am glad you liked it.
Thank you. Wonderful instructive tips!
Thank you very much well I have just finished seeing one of the most instructive videos on the complexion and on the issue hot / cold lights cold / warm shadows which is a topic not easy to understand (at least for me) I wait for your next video on the topic..for now thanks thanks thanks..you are an excellent teacher!
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Ben, Thank you so much for this great tutorial. Simplifying what many of us tend to make overly complex helps so much with the 'flow' of making paintings. I must say the idea of 'Phoning your mother in law' to take a break maybe pushing things too far! Haha... Thanks again and stay safe yourself. :)
Glad it was helpful!
You explain the information so concisely and well. Very relieved to have discovered your channel, such simple, unvarnished instructions are difficult to find. I’ve received so much practical help here. 🌹
Thank you for letting me know.
Fascinating & relaxing to watch at the same time. I love the way you hold the brush.
Thank you
Beautifully painted.
Your style, voice, and the music...are perfect!...thank you

You are so welcome!
I addore the passion and real wisdom of this painter!
Thank you
You share so much valuable information, for someone who came to painting late in life, I REALLY have learned so much from you and your calm delivery isn’t intimidating. Thank you Ben.
You are so welcome Joan.
I love your painting! Thank you so much for this amazing teaching. Shadows is something I struggle with and I am always fearful of going too dark. I also wasn't confident mixing colour. Thank you for explaining all of these things clearly. This has taught me something valuable. Great advice about taking a rest from painting. I have ruined countless paintings from not stopping when I was clearly too tired to continue. I find your teaching videos very relaxing and inspirational to watch.
Thank you tracy. I am glad it helped.
You are the Best teacher for me and so many young arthesis.

Thank you Christopher
I love to watch your videos and your wise tips on how to paint.
Thank you
I agree with "iam ME" in that the painting started to come together when you softened/blended the left cheek. It seemed that from that point on the portrait came more and more to life with each stroke of your brush...in that the foundation of the work was in place by that point and now it was time for you to put the nuances into play in order to lift the piece to life. At least that's how it appeared to me. Thank you Ben.
Thank you. I try to show the best I can.
Your tutorials are so easy to understand, thank you so much for giving away such wonderful information.
Thank you Sue.
Thanks for sharing this teaching Sir 💟🦉
