From 72 year old fellow artist. This man amazingly puts into words what all artists lived and live. From childhood, to becoming the "draughtsman" to becoming the fulfilled artist. Young artists take heed its a whole way of life that grows and grows and grows.

Thank you Mr. Lustenhouwer. Fantastic lesson. I'm an artist of many years and still learning. Interesting to learn from your experiences among different people in different countries. And your portraits! Wow!! I have been commissioned here in East Africa severally for paintings but if I paint like you, I will always have work. Will improve. I am self-taught and my problem has been to apply the right colour in the right place as you said - but also to do it without fear.
    Thanks. Ben

My instructors referred to themselves as craft persons because they didn't feel comfortable with the term artist. A craft person works at a craft and is constantly learning. Seems to me the word artist comes across as finished.
Your paintings are full of life and energy. Conveying the closeness between the child and grandfather comes across extremely well!

I really liked the fact you touched on the fact you consider yourself a craftsman rather than an artist. I would consider you a master craftsman. I also believe the label of "art" or "artist" is stifling. If I want to create garbage, all I need to do is set out to create "art." Art is so subjective and it can lead to sloppiness as you seem to have found in art school. I also went to art college in the late 70's and the type of "art" they cultivated required required little discipline and much interpretation. As a person into representational art, I also consider it a craft. The art comes from the expertise in the craft, like , as you alluded to in the interview, a finely crafted piece of furniture or a finely crafted boat. That requires discipline and not just the interpretation of the crowd that's in style. I don't have to interpret your paintings. I enjoy them at first glance. They aren't photographs or photographic representations. . They are very beautiful paintings with much skill ( craftsmanship and, and dare I say, artistry), and the glimpse of the world though another persons eyes. I enjoyed your interview very much. You are a great teacher and thank you for all your work in making all of this available.

How in the world did the old masters do portraits? Hours of sitting? I listened carefully to your explanation of working from photos. I found myself feeling relieved as I never could gert my children to sit still for a sketch ( I wrote I had 8 children 5 sons three adopted girls). I hated school so when my kids were little, I taught them at home giving me great insight and allowing me to be free with my kids. The are adults now and I have time to learn so I turned to wanting to be more of a draftsman not just a happy accident painter. We did not travel but lived a simple life in the country 18 acres. I want to work from some of my photos of my goats, sheep kids and life around that time from my photos. The movement of the sun always changes the character of the model which I find frustrating which is why I can proceed with photos and not feel guilty. My husband is a physician and can do many creative woodworking, construction, gardening, airplane model building things.
I mention that because I agree with your thinking of yourself as a draftsmen a very humble perception of yourself. Art is everywhere in society: creating portraits, music, innovation in science, building a chair.
No reply is necessary I thank you for your insight.

Yes, certain things can be easy. But keep in mind artists are able to achieve this privilege (as I like to call it) through talent and hard work. The average person cannot do this therefore it is extremely difficult. Another thing I'd like to mention is while every artist has his or her own preference in regards to creating a portrait, exaggeration should never be undermined because it is a form of creativity. We must always strive further than painting what we see in a photo. That said, you, sir, have an excellent way of handling paint (oils I assume).
