The shot of Sarah's head lifting out of the bloody pool is a direct homage to Apocalypse Now.
As he said, Sarah scream with the torch in her hand is from Predator, the hand reaching out from the ground is fom Evil Dead. I also noticed some subtle references to Alien and the music theme from The Thing.
Fun Fact: In the special features for the movie they described the creatures as the cavemen who never left the caves. The director also purposely hid what the creatures looked like from the cast, so in the scene when they all encounter one for the first time as it jump scares them, that's their genuine fearful reaction IN REAL LIFE.
Also, the behind the scenes clips feature the extras in the creature costumes having fun, drinking coffee, gossiping, filing each other's nails, etc. It's hilarious!

I like to think its the monsters chilling, hanging out during their down time from shooting, like this film was made in a world where film monsters live alongside people quite like how toons did in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. That could be an interesting horror comedy concept.

The metal rod through the window scene is one of the best jump scares ever and always a joy to see the return of no neck Hannah.
There was alot of good jump scares. But How was that a jump scare? U see it coming and there wasn't any loud music or sound. It differently had shock factor. But it's not a jump scare lol.
This is tied with a certain jumpscare from Haunting of Hill House for me. Good jumpscares actually stand out

I understood this movie as a huge metaphor (symbolism 😂) for descending into depression, madness, solitude, etc. because of trauma. AND as a super creepy, gory movie. Best of both worlds 😌

Yes. The darker ending fits the theme of the movie so much better.
Honestly? That's more realistic. It took all of them just to reach the dangerous areas, and they were well-equipped, prepared, and at their physical best. After hours of terror, hunger, and losing pieces of gear? No way.

Remember, one is still depressed about their family dying, and one is trying to prove herself because she cheated with the husband of her friend. And the one trying to prove themselves leaves the guide book behind, another tries to be cool free-climbing and ended up falling and breaking their leg badly. This is a pathetic group of people.

I don't see how one ending is more realistic than the other. Both are realistic. Sometimes in life it seems impossible to do something and then a miracle happens and you then have a hard time understanding how it happened.
The Descent = the descendants of Gollum. I had to pause to laugh 🤣🤣🤣 I love you guys.
The guy who directed this also directed one of the best werewolf films made imo it’s called dog soldiers and it’s definitely worth a watch!
Yesssss, i was looking for that comment! I remember renting Dog soldiers because i could not find anything interesting. I think its my top 1 movie i thought it would suck and was really good.

How awesome would it be if this were that worlds versions of vampires and the dog soldiers and them collided? Haha friends go cave diving and find out a few of them are actually the werewolves and then they face these creatures.
I don’t think I’ve ever disliked a horror movie character as much as I’ve disliked Juno. Couldn’t agree more with Ash about Juno being the real villain of this movie.
She had an affair with Sarah’s husband, abandoned Sarah during her time of grieving when she needed her most, and made her friends take an unknown path down the cave tunnels instead of having the map of the safe and known path which pretty much got them all killed in the end. What I found most despicable about her though was when, even though she stabbed Beth while in her shocked/panicked state by accident, she still abandoned her fatally wounded friend after the fact, leaving her to die a slow, agonizing death instead of mercy killing her which Sarah did later.
Juno also didn’t come clean to her surviving friends about the Beth accident which made them not trust her even further which led to Sarah betraying Juno in the end. Sure, they would’ve been pissed at Juno for her carelessness, but I’d like to think that they would’ve trusted each other a little better from that honesty and worked harder to survive against the crawlers as a team.
Overall, Juno infuriated me with her careless actions. Idc what anyone else says in her defense. She’s an awful character and no one can convince me otherwise.
She waaay too comfortable making careless decisions.

She didn't purposely get them lost, just to state an important observation. She wanted to explore an unknown system yes, but that doesn't mean there is intention of getting yourself lost.
The best part about this movie is the fact the title itself is a symbolism its about descending into the caves and the main characters descent into madness

@@sproductionsinc I traditionally don't like the pessimistic endings in British movies/shows. Like Being Human UK version ending. But in this movie I think the Brit version makes more sense in a story like this. The odds of getting out with so many still hunting is so unlikely. It is their home, their world.
Yes! You reacted to the original version of this movie. Most reactors usually ended up watching the US version which always makes me upset because this ending was much better.

Movies have different versions/endings specifically for the markets they are released in. In the American market, we tend to be more optimistic. We love happy endings, conclusions to stories or maybe set ups for sequels. Where as in the UK and or European markets, they seem to love darker, pessimistic endings where it doesn't turn out so great. lol I preferred the original British ending cuz I think it was more realistic.

You're spot on about the tunnels being a horror movie in itself. This movie conveys the uneasy feeling of claustrophobia better than any I've seen & that's without all the creature & gore elements. It's such an effective horror movie. One of the very best of the 21st Century to date & one of my favourites.
I haven’t gotten scared or creeped out by a movie in years- although I still love them- but I’m very claustrophobic, and this film made me squirm in my seat when they’re trapped in the cave and the crevices get smaller.
The claustrophobia is the real horror in this movie, the monsters come second!! One of my favorite horrors, I remeber showing one of my best friends this years ago and have never seen someone jump so high to a jump scare 😂
One of the theories is that Sarah actually lost it innthe cave and killed them all. There were never creatures, it was all Sarah and that's so 🔥
That makes no sense because they all individually saw them without Sarah being there.
@@uggggggghhhhh Sarah is the first to see a crawler, which can mean one of two things. She could have just completely invented them as an excuse to justify her friends’ slaughter. The other possibility is that there really are crawlers in the cave, but they are not the violent creatures we see onscreen. The initial crawlier could have been a source of inspiration. Sarah sees something monstrous, so she projects herself on it. It's just a fun theory about a movie.........
There is also a Descent 2 where other people go in and attacked by creatures

This is seriously one of the most underrated horror movies ever! The cast and script was amazing!
It took a while, but glad it's finally getting it's flowers the past few years.
When Sarah says, “Love each day” in the beginning at the cabin, and Juno looked at her in a weird way, then connecting Juno’s necklace that said the same thing and Sarah finding it in her dying friend’s hand, Beth, was an aha moment for her. It solidified what Juno and her husband had going on.
This is such a good movie going in blind not knowing what is coming that’s how I watched it and it scared tf out of me. Y’all are great reactors 😂😂😂 hilarious people I would enjoy going to the movies with you guys

Glad y'all enjoyed the movie. I grew up in the 80's with all the best horror movies and it's really hard for me to get scared watching a movie. But when I first watched this one it did the trick 😂
I personally love this alternate ending. It gives you the impression that the main character is slowly beginning to experience a descent into madness. There is a second part, which I haven't seen, that probably continues this ending, but I still like to think that this is the true ending. Great reaction. Greetings from Mexico.

Great reaction guys! The Descent is one of my favourite horrors of all time. It's intense, claustrophobic and allegorical. Sarah's final descent into madness.

This movie was one of my fav horror.this just shows that other horrific nightmares are nothing compared to Sarah's personal nightmare that she couldn't even ever wake up from even when her eyes are open seeing other horrific stuffs.

my favorite theory about this movie is that there are no monsters at all, only Sarah losing her mind due to stress and depression / trauma, and she's the one really killing her friends, we see the movie in her perspective imagining goblins doing it.
She's the one to first spot the goblin, then Juno jumpscares us and tells her it's dark you're scared or whatever, YOUR MIND SEES WHAT IT WANTS TO SEE, so her mind makes up this goblin scenario to get her trough the REAL trauma of going koo-koo bananas and killing her friends ... it's a Descent ... into madness

I have never felt my validated for my beliefs than hearing good-hearted, wise Hannah agree that Beth sneaking up silently behind Juno after the 1st Crawler attack was a dumb a$$ thing to do. Thank you, Hannah! Beth was an idiot, Juno was a lonely home wrecking whore, but she saved lives!
It was Juno's fault that they ended up in that part of the cave. She also left the map behind. She cheated with her friend's husband.

There are always "theories" lol There's always some film student amateurs psychologist wanting a deeper meaning to a movie. Like with Pulp Fiction and the gold briefcase.
This is honestly what I took from the movie the first time I saw it... I thought it seemed kind of obvious that she had killed them all and gone completely mad (and the creatures weren't real)... but my friends all disagreed with me and said I was crazy. hah :)

They made a second one but its low budget. The cops make her go back in you'll be surprised who she encounters.
The second movie was actually more expensive than the first one. (3.5 mil GPB ~ $7 mil USD vs $10 mil USD) It's just the first one makes better and smarter use of the its budget.

U guys should check out part 2. It finishes the story and answers a lot of questions. For going straight to DvD, it was pretty good
As a climber and a spelunker, this movie classifies as more of a comedy in our community because of all of the things that are inaccurate, or that the characters did that are massive "Don't not do's", but still an excellent movie. I still get nervous checking around corners when exploring caves, cause you never quite know if there's going to be a demon goblin waiting to munch on you.
I went spelunking once in a very easy beginner friendly cave with my dorm in college and while fun I could never do lead climbing like our guide did, and I could NEVER do a tunnel so narrow you can’t turn around. That 💩 takes balls far bigger than mine.
I'm so proud of Hannah for defending Juno as the writers intended. The anti-Juno interpretations are over-simplistic and completely ignore the movie's intent. The movie is so groundbreaking because it blurs the lines between antagonist and protagonist. Juno's initial actions are intensely dislikeable but, as even Ash shows by comparing her to Lara Croft, the movie eventually makes you appreciate her to some degree whether you like it or not. She's written to be physically strong but emotionally weak, but grows in the latter sense as the movie goes on and she compensates for her past actions. Meanwhile, Sarah, the supposed protagonist, descends further into self-pity and introspection, unable to overcome her past and her victimhood and becoming, in the end, the villain through her final vengeful act (and, indeed, then dying just as the rest do). Hence "The Descent", by the way: it's Sarah's spiral into grief, apathy and loathing. It's a very, very harsh message, admittedly. But have a look online; there are tons of erudite and impassioned defences of Juno's flawed but human character.

Other moral: even if you mislead your friends, make certain someone knows where you're actually going. That way, if things go wrong, people know where to look. Once they're missed, the search will be at the wrong caves.
This is my most favorite horror movie of all time and i'm so glad coz you look so invested in watching this and clearly enjoying it and genuinely loves it so it easily made me subscribe to your channel! And now you're already one of the channels i'll always watch out for horror reactions!

Yeah, original ending so much better. The US theatrical ending with it ending at Juno's "ghost" totally changes the vibe of the movie, suddenly it's a ghost movie. Her being back in the cave, and never really getting out is so grim, but appropriate.
They should do Dog Soldiers now too
Watched this one on Patreon and gotta say, Hannah did a lot better than I thought she would! Yeah, some gags and eye rolls here and there, but she stayed strong and no pauses to gather herself! Lol. Way to go, Hannah!

This is one of my all-time favorite horror, movies. As Ash was saying, just the actual descent in the cave, exploring these claustrophobic tunnels is in itself scary enough and then they added those monsters. What I like about the development of this movie is that you’re not sure at first if it’s Sarah who’s having PTSD or losing her mind after what she has been through to coming to realize that she’s actually right and those things are real.
Thank you for hating Juno throughout, Ash. Literally everything in this movie is her fault, from the accident to them being in the caves. She should be in prison for multiple counts of negligent homicide. I can't believe they let her live to the end. And Shauna Macdonald (Sarah) is the most beautiful woman from the UK I've ever seen. Your reactions are awesome when Ash can keep his crude comments in check. Cheers !
As far as I'm concerned, this film is an absolute masterpiece. Easily in my top 10 favorite horror movies of all time. I'm claustrophobic so there were moments in this film that made me feel very panicky and like I couldn't breathe. Even without the creatures, just being in their situation would be hell on earth for me. So intense and scary. Well directed, well acted, all of it is top notch. Glad you and Hannah finally watched this one.
In rock climbing, making the first ascent of a new route is one of the highest achievements because you're the first to show it's doable as well as setting anchors. Climber making first ascent gets to name the route. Probably something similar in cave exploration.
The latter is way more involved and has tons more safety concerns, and I felt this script did an excellent job of portraying how an exploration team can plausibly get themselves steadily into trouble just by a series of believable misfortunes and decisions that are just slightly too unwise but understandable given the mindsets and personalities of the players involved.
The American version of this movie, Sarah does get out and escape. I think it's because we can't handle sad endings lol

The US version has the ending that is happy where she lives, the UK version is the one you guys reacted to. I chose to go with her making it out because all she went through and still lives is much more satisfying

We love optimistic endings in the U.S. (and sequels lol) Brits and Europeans seem to love pessimistic darker endings. That's why there are two endings. I see your point, she's been through so much she really doesn't deserve the unresolved, torment of dying down there.

@@FEARNoMorePeople from most European countries like more realistic endings. to us, the Americans weird fear of realistic/pessimistic endings in movies is bizzarre and kind of childish in a way. I remember I laughed when I heard that they had to make a different ending for this movie specifically for americans. Of course we hAVE horror movies too with happy endings but we are not afraid to show in movies that not everything always works out and that world can be a scary place 🤷🏻♀️.

The moral of the movie to me is that one person’s selfish actions can drive everyone else to hell.
You really have to watch second part guys. Its very great and it must watch to see how characters of movie will end.
What I do love is that despite the premise, even without the monsters this whole movie could have played out. The fear, the isolation and paranoia bringing them to fight each other to survive. So many things could go wrong with cave diving improperly. One example Juno popped flares the entire time, one methane deposit and they all would have flashed burned and at best had all the air burn out and suffocate them worst case burn them alive. Another possibility, there being no exit and them just being simply trapped underground.
This channel has quickly became one of my favorite channels to watch. BOTH of your reactions is so good and genuine. I love how you talk to each other and treat each other. So much love and realness between you two. Wonderful reactions ❤❤

everything was done practical in this movie and the crawlers were kept away from the girls so when they first encounter them their scream were genuine

Can I say that I'm SO FRIGGIN JEALOUS that as Brits first experience with The Descent was with the original intended ending w/Sarah still in the cave. For some god awful reason, that irks me til this day, that ending was cut from the US release because producers thought audiences "would find the ending too depressing" so instead it just ends with the Juno jumpscare then cuts to black.
I haven't started watching it yet and I'm already cracking up at what Hannahs reaction is going to be 😂🤣😂🤣😂

I can already tell you both will absolutely love it! And ash you will have an absolute field day with the symbolismzzzzz. Its hands down one of the best horror movies I've seen in the past decade. Hannah's reactions are always so good and empathetic. Poor thing during the gross out moments 😅 Others have thought about that theory that Sarah snapped and there's mention of it in the sequel (Definitely a drop in quality but still entertaining.).

The ending where Sarah got out was the American ending. And part 2 plays off that . And Sarah and some others go back down there in part 2 . And find a surprise.

Juno was shitty for the affair, but killing Beth was an accident, you don't come at someone's back suddenly in that situation before warning, and she was helping them all the best she could, I don't think she deserved being crippled by Sarah and left to die at all.
Um… she also caused them to be trapped. Also, it’s not just an affair. It’s an affair with your best friend’s fella who is the father of her kid. Nah, Juno is garbage. Deserves it all.
But she also left Beth when she begged her not to and then lied about what happened. It's also literally her fault they all died so yeah she deserved it.
Yes she is shitty and all but you are all over the top, she deserves lots of bad karma her way but she does not deserve death.

i like the arc of the girls turning into warriors for survival and juno is my favorite she didnt mean to kill her friend thats why you never sneak up on someone from behind get hurt but then karma came back on juno in end and i hated seeing her wounded and outnumbered a hopeless dark situation

Decent was a good film and good reaction as always team! But, Ash ma man, you need to calm down a bit 😂😂 the amount of things you miss or hit the remote control is unreal!! Hannah is right, you need to watch more and everything 😂
There’s a Descent 2, it is not as good but still pretty good movie. But at least you guys can know how the story continues. 😊
Edit: Sarah has amnesia and in the hospital, and the police want to know what happened to the others girls but she doesn’t remember so they take Sarah down there to trigger her memory again. Not going to ruin it, but it’s a good concept for a part 2. Hope you enjoy it!

Just wanted to say, I found y'all's channel when I was going through alot of depression and stressful nights. Got hooked and have went back and watched every video that has come out. The first film is absolutely great, the second film is decent it's not good or bad it's more like on a meh tier but worth a look if you did enjoy the first movie.
