    Fun fact: Dani smiling at the end was her choosing to let everything go, and to just except the way her life is now. She is smiling like that because after everything that's happened to her, the trauma of losing her family, and then going through watching all her friends die horribly was to much. Hereditary and Midsommar are truly twin movies, and Ari has described them as such. One in daylight, one in darkness. Death of family opens the film. One cult using love, the other using force. A character who is friendly to the protagonist actually driving them into the clutches of the cult. Massive head trauma seen a third of the way through that changes the whole tone of the film. And a character crowned king and queen at the end.

    Idk if you noticed it - but what's really creepy about the scene where Dani's crying is the indoctrination happening there. First they surround her; so she can't see anything but them. She has nothing to ground herself back in reality, away from them, because they are all she can perceive. Then they mimic her. Then, slowly, they make it so that SHE is now mimicking them - without even realising she's doing it. It's so sneaky and clever.

    I used to live in that part of Sweden, Hälsingland. Though not very close to Hårga. The old story is that a mysterious figure appeared there during a party and started playing music which made others dance until they died. This tale eventually turned into regular dancing events in more modern times. One of my neighbours was into that. If I remember correctly a mall also had a painting on the wall depicting dancing and typical things for the area. Midsommar events can indeed involve dancing with traditional clothes. But what's also common is a lot of drinking, someone passing out on a couch or outside, others having sex in an empty room where the party is being held etc. I once read that more children than average are born 9 months after midsommar parties😂

That scene when the mother bizarrely creeps and wakes her son up in the middle of the night to set him on fire, never felt that chilled in my life! I saw this great “symbolisms” thing on twitter forever ago that I’m sure Ash will appreciate; if this commune is Wonderland, then Pelle is the tornado that brought them there. Obviously his intent is not outright villainy or malice, but his intent is absolutely to recruit Dani. I think killing the others as sacrifices becomes incidental once he realizes that he has his hooks in Dani. At the table scene, when she mentions that supposedly Simon left without Connie, she tells Christian that she can imagine him abandoning her that same way (mirroring the dream she had the previous night). When Dani says this, a very hesitant but obvious smile curls itself comfortably on to Pelle’s face. That moment tells you everything you need to know lmao

      hf: I'm not being obnoxious about it. I just want to mention that it's The tornado that takes Dorothy to Oz and Alice chased the White Rabbit down the rabbit hole into Wonderland (after she fell asleep).

    Love this film so much.
    The three American men are like embodiments of everything that’s wrong with modern American culture: fear of commitment, inability to form proper relationships, blind careerist ambition and childish pleasure-seeking. They can’t give Dani what she needs when she’s experiencing the worst grief and trauma of her life. Then the Horga present themselves as a real, loving community who look out for each other and live in harmony. I love it because it’s simultaneously a critique of modern culture and a warning about false alternatives.
    Incredibly a lot of people saw this as a “girl boss” movie and thought it has a happy ending. Like “Yas you go girl!!” Absolutely blew my mind how stupid some people are, that they thought the film where a fascist death cult exploits a vulnerable woman’s trauma in order to kidnap and indoctrinate her was some kind of life-affirming happy-clappy feel-good film. Dark times we live in, honestly.

      You're taking the outside observer's perspective. While anyone who sees this as a happy ending for her is looking at it from her perspective. How she went from a girl with no family, not much of any friendships, in an awful relationship and depressed to all hell for months. To someone who gets a brand new life, full of supportive, loving family and friends. There's probably an asterisk here and there, like they might kill her if she betrays them, but that new life is certainly preferable for her over being back on her couch crying, having no loved ones.

    • @AT-rr2xw
      @AT-rr2xw Před rokem

      @@bajjanitor I mean, that is what a cult does. Prey on the vulnerable. It was a real bonus that they did not need to separate her from her family, since her family was already dead. However, if they had not died, then she might not have been so psychologically vulnerable to be a good prospect. Double bonus. All that was needed to separate her from her already semi-distant boyfriend...after he provided the community with a seed.
