    UPDATES:
    1. Daisy chain test: The AV OUT jack is only for use on Analog TV and Composite video sources. Got another 1/8"-to-Composite/Stereo female adapter cord. The factory bungled the cord and the picture was scrambled. Tried all potential permutations of hooking up that cable (Yellow -> White, etc.) and got no results whatsoever. Any definitive outcome on that particular test (as of the upload date) is on ice. EDIT #2: Got a second adapter-different brand, same results-no setting options in menu. I’m calling the AV OUT garbage.
    2. Firmware: The Tyler website makes no mention whatsoever of any kind of downloadable updates. As it stands, the "Software Update" option simply exists with no particular use that I can find.
    3. FM Tuning: The user manual implies that manual tuning on the FM Radio can only be done via the remote. I have had no such luck.
    3.5. The tuner keeps trying to add presets to frequencies that are one "stop" off from the actual station...and misses the actual station entirely (ex. adding a
    preset for 98.5 when the station broadcasts on 98.7--and adding no preset for 98.7).
    4. Antennas: The "suction cup" antennas are actually magnetic.
    5. I'm convinced this monitor is the same one used on some cheap dashcams.

      Gotta wonder if the RCA adapter has the same quirk as (or a similar one to) some Samsung TV adapters where what would normally be composite on a camcorder adapter is actually ground so no matter how you rearrange it, it just doesn't work.
      I "borrowed" one of those back when I was working at Walmart and toying with the idea of going to school to be an EE, found pretty quick that it didn't work with my Sony camcorder, did some tests with a continuity meter, and found the pinout is entirely proprietary.
      It could also be a funky arrangement with the actual plug (or maybe it is a firmware issue, tough to say).

    After seeing how much trouble you had with this mini TV, I myself miss the old analog days when a portable TV with batteries could get the job done. No headaches, no troubles, just turn on the old reliable portable analog TV and watch until the batteries were completely drained.
    I had a converter box after the switchover, but now I can't find it, and I do most of my TV watching on the computer.

    The problem with the HDMI is that the tv don't like or support 23,97 Hertz signal force by the BD. Use a digital tv tuner or computer for 29,97 (DVD), 60i or 60p.
    Modern HDMI TVs do there own 4:3 pulldown and it's done by the compression of the disc for DVDs (24hz to 60i).

    I thought id come back and share what I learned. You can just plug a TV tuner into the USB C slot of a phone or tablet. (Mygica TV Tuner)
    To use a tablet as a TV moniter, You can plug a HDMI to USB C adapter into a tablet or phone, and then a RCA to HDMI converter into that. These adapters simply shows up as a camera input, like a webcam and tada!
    I wonder if the generic RCA to USB adapters are using the same camera protocol? Maybe they would work with a USB A to C adapter? (one adapter instead if the two together)

  • @neilforbes416
    @neilforbes416 Před rokem +1

  • @danthemainman1
    @danthemainman1 Před rokem +1

    Ah yes, the portable digital TV rabbit hole. I’ve gone down it before, partially for similar reasons, partially due to not wanting to waste valuable space on a TV I’m just not going to use very often.
    My main experiences with portable digital TV were with a portable DVD player with a built in ATSC tuner and with a USB dongle for an Android device. The DVD player had dreadful battery life, so it wouldn’t be very good in an emergency situation, but it could be nice for field-testing media in thrift stores. The USB based tuner was only compatible with Android devices that supported USB On-The-Go, but I had one lying around. It does drain the battery more than standard usage, but the battery life was dramatically better than the DVD player.
    As an emergency power tip for USB rechargeable devices, you might invest in a USB power bank with a built-in solar charger. They’re not super effective indoors (they charge best outdoors in direct sunlight), but they can probably charge the relevant sort of Android device to full charge one and a half to three times. And they’re probably still more portable than this TV is.

  • @madmax2069
    @madmax2069 Před rokem

    The USB port on this is mainly to play back video files from a thumb drive. One thing they should have done is had a secondary USB port for charging only as this would have made it possible to keep it charged up by using a USB power bank, or a solar charger.
    You should also buy a SSB (single sideband) capable shortwave radio (Tecsun PL-330, Eton Elite Executive, CCrane skywave SSB 2) . Simply because you can listen to AM/MW, FM, Shortwave, amateur Ham radio, CB, and the battery life will last a while.
    Last year when hurricane Ian hit Florida the Ham operators was communicating information, weather reports, and other information.

    I just bought the TTV704-9. It's "ok". But just. The picture quality is BAD. I can tweak it to be viewable. I'm glad this is a "storm" TV. I have a 12V car battery and a preamp for my outdoor antenna, and then this TV. I have a Vizio VMB070 that has WAY better over all quality. But the lack of tint, and poor volume level kills it. • @ShawnTewes
    @ShawnTewes Před rokem

    I know that there are at least a few different flavors of the 1/8" TRRS to 3-RCA (composite + stereo audio) adaptor cables. The more common ones used in a variety of Sony camcorders are incompatible with the A/V inputs or outputs on some devices such as cable boxes and LCD monitors/tvs in the way they're wired up internally. If you heard a buzz on your PVM, then that's likely caused by a video signal being fed to the monitor's audio inputs or ground. I've been able to make the "camcorder" cables work on such devices by shorting the yellow jack's positive and negative contacts, then connecting either the red or white (can't recall right now) to the monitor's video input. If you're up for it, try sticking a wire or a piece of tin foil between the contacts on the yellow jack and see what happens. If still nothing, try it again but shorting the white jack instead (thus connecting red or yellow to monitor).

I've only found out about QUEST yesterday when I was at a hotel room a couple states up. From the minute I've seen of it, it looks like it's a dime store Discovery channel knockoff (more dime store than actual Discovery). And does your local COZI TV randomly have what I can only describe as telephone dials every 12 minutes? Mine does, even on the cable feed, and it's as mysterious and weird as it is annoying.

      I wonder if he tested portable digital TV with an antenna in a vertical orientation? The main UK transmitters are horizontally polarised so you need your antenna to be horizontally oriented too. I live 50km away from the strongest transmitter so according to all the commentators, their theory suggests that portable digital TV should be impossible. Right? Yet with a cheap £2 "rabbit ears" antenna I bought from a nationwide discount store set in a horizontal orientation, I picked up all the Freeview multiplexes, including the weak (now closed) COM7 multiplex. I also got everything with a cheap tabletop Labgear antenna from the 1990s that I bought off the market. Portable digital TV can work even in distant signal areas but you need to be aware of antenna orientation.

      Why critique a Ben's Junk? Thru are always more or less like this and we love it! Why critique a video at all?
      Also I found your comment long winded and not one of your best comments.

      @@OddityArchive Fair enough. Just my opinion. I loved you older content from your first video to about 2017, and I love your thrifting videos (which in my eye are the best thrifting videos of anyone's.) But, I dunno, it seems to of petered off somewhere. It must be me I guess. I mean, dont get me wrong ,I still watch a lot of your newer content, but nowhere near as much as I used to. You videos from 2012-2015 were amazing and I love them even to this day. Where's Serge when we need him!

      @@nazznomad Good I am really glad about that, thanks for the review, Nazz. It is a joy that you have read it. And we are all entitled to an opinion. I am glad I got yours. But, I am too old to change now, so I will stick with what I am used to writing. But, I did find your comment enlightening.
