The 1965 cut of A Charlie Brown Christmas also has some different animation, as a few errors were fixed for the first rerun broadcast in 1966.
Tons of subtle things were changed actually if you check the lost media archive article.
The Paramount streaming service has one season of You Can’t Do That On Television.
It always annoys me when footage that was shown on a VHS or Laserdisc isn't included in DVD and Blu-ray releases. The footage is obviously available and didn't get thrown out with the trash, so what's the deal?! I shouldn't have to scower CZcams just to see the uncensored death scenes from Nightmare on Elm Street 5 and Scream!
I remember the first Garfield Christmas Special I "owned" was a VHS capture of one of CBS's airings, just before the Claymation Christmas special. It was a WEIRD edit, too. The entire segment where they sang "Oh Christmas Tree" was cut, but there was an extended (and rather pointless) sequence where Jon was driving to the farmhouse. By extended, it was an extra 10 seconds of background music. An instrumental version of the song Jon sang about his old Christmas memories, but with dumb sound effects added to it, squeaks and bonks and rattles. Now, I've never come across that version in any of the commercially released home video. The driving segment is cut to go straight to Jon's dialogue in the car. I'm wondering if this scene was captured by anyone or if it's lost media.
I own the Garfield holiday special and the claymation Christmas special on dvd
Sometimes when i find shows I remember and still like on dvd (even on bootleg) at a thrift shop it’s worth it just for a bargain
I don't quite remember Mr. Bean being shown on my local PBS station, but I do remember Mr. Bean being shown on Fox Family back in the late 90s, along with Jeremy Beadle.
@ I haven't revisited it since I was in middle school but I believe you. Rowan Atkinson is hilarious in other stuff he's done though, too bad he's pretty much known stateside for that show and the movie Rat Race (another thing I haven't really seen since it came out).
@ I just read a fan theory that Mr.Bean is supposed to be alien. It makes sense. I thought he was just not right in the head.
The 4k editions of the Peanuts specials have 2 different viewing options (slightly cropped but more on the sides) 16X9, and original 4X3
RE: The Simpsons Christmas Episode, yes, it was the first one to air.. however, it wasn't the first one in production order. Quite famously the original first episode was to be "Some Enchanted Evening" but when a rough cut of the animation was shown it was deemed too "cartoony" and was to be re-edited.. thus delaying that episode. If you were to watch that episode now you'd notice some scenes look odd - those would be leftovers that weren't cut.
As an aside, the original rough cut of Some Enchanted Evening can be found here on YT.
given the delays caused by the animation issues, the premier was delayed until December and with that they decided that the Christmas episode would be the first one to air.
Incidentally, I had that same tape and would watch it over and over again as a kid. It's a major holiday memory and one I still enjoy watching.
Those animation issues were caused by the company itself, Klasky Csupo. Klasky Csupo turned from a minor animation company into a giant, sparking the world multiple times with the Simpsons (such as their 48 shorts, the special premiere, its first 3 seasons, a handful of Butterfinger commercials, and of course "The Bartman") until right after Klasky's gigantic-smash classic "Rugrats" premiered, and it was the biggest hit for the company (and for Nickelodeon of course), but sometimes Klasky had a few minor problems (especially the colorization problem on "Homer's Odyssey"). But it was a shame that Klasky didn't last long with its relationship with the Simpsons as Film Roman had to take its leader from Gracie Films in 1992. It was Gracie's decision to do so, but Klasky was still sparking with Nickelodeon at its productions, even they tried it with a few other networks too, including their own films and other specials into the "Splaat" era and beyond, and as of 2021, Klasky's still going strong.
@@eascec8374 Thanks for the details! I certainly couldn't recall all that and you filled it all in nicely!
It's a heck of a story when you think about it, especially when you bring up what K-C would go on to do -- a show that had as much impact on kids like me at the time as the Simpsons did.
Heck, the K-C story itself is a bit of a wild ride if I remember.
Anytime!
I hate to say this but I have that same Jack Benny set. The Charlie brown i try not to miss but i do want to see it once complete with the Coke commercials.
The Charlie Brown Christmas 4K Blu-Ray you mention has both the original 4:3 and cropped 16:9 versions on it.
Thanks for the Bean tidbit. I thought I was a true fan, but even I didn't know about the deleted scene showing Bean buying the huge turkey. I can't believe I've been watching an incomplete episode every year!!
I watched Mr. Bean as a child. As an adult i watched all of the Black Adder Series on Amazon Prime, then watched Mr. Bean and now i can't stand Mr. Bean!
They're polar opposites.
"I hated Mr. Bean. I have the full laser disc collection" - Ben
I hated Mr. Bean the first time I saw it. It sank in the second time around.
Do you remember seeing Santa and the Three Bears at any point during your childhood? It was once a very common syndicated Christmas special usually run on weekend afternoons or on UHF TV channels. The animation is rather crude as it was independently produced by animators and directors who normally worked for Hanna-Barbera, but IMO, the story is rather cute and heartwarming. I always watch it at some point during December. The first time I ever saw it was during preschool storytime at the library where they ran a 16mm print of it. I later saw it on Fox Family in the late 90s and eventually acquired a few PD copies over the years. The best print is on the "Six Hour Christmas Cartoon Collection" DVD from UAV Corporation. While it is indeed rather compressed, it still has better sharpness and color than most other PD copies. UAV did release a single DVD copy during 2003 or 2004 under their "DVD Toons" label, but it's very hard to come by even on eBay.
I actually own that said special on dvd through some public domain cartoon sets
Although I havn’t seen it yet
we need that storm more than you do. it's been so dry here on the west coast
So if the Christmas movies are being saved for another year, it means The Oddity Archive has been renewed for several more seasons. :)
Just like The Simpsons. Which, it's funny that Ben stopped watching the show in 1998-99 when that is the most common time I hear from friends that they stopped watching also.
Would love to see these Garfield/Charlie Brown ornaments! So cool! Garfield Christmas is one I watch every year!
That'd make for a true Oddity Archive episode!
I had a couple of the Hallmark Garfield ones somewhere. My mother also collected the Peanuts ones until she just gave up. I've just been trying to get the annual Star Wars and Muppets ones. I keep missing out on certain Transformers.
The Peanuts stuff is on Apple TV+
There is a nice Charlie brown set of all the Holiday episodes on Blu-ray & 4K I highly recommend recommend that set .And they have both 16:9 and 4:3. Got to love the peanut series 👍🏻
Great holiday video I always enjoy watching what you put out 👍🏻 Merry Christmas
Funny, I saw that Pinky and the Brain boxset but didn't get it, instead optimg for the 2 Animaniacs boxsets at a rummage store... those are the ones Chris Chan happened to have as I saw a sticker with their name on it
Wait so you own stuff that was previously owned by chris chan??
You can’t do that on television is a classic Canadian-based comedy kids show which made nickelodeon popular for the green slime. A show that kind of used the you can’t do that on television formula was a Nickelodeon show called all that with a young Keenan Thompson and Amanda Bynes . Well Worth checking out.
Then, Kenan's got spun-off with Kel, and that show was a hit, too. Now, he's the longest current tenured SNL cast member.
I taped that Mr Bean episode on its original transmission here in the UK, Christmas 1992. I'm sure when I saw the DVD, those extended scenes were indeed new to me.
"Have you got the turkey on?"
YCDTOTV was one of my favorite Nickelodeon shows! My father used to work with Lisa Ruddy's cousin (or uncle, forget which LOL) here in NJ back in the 80s.
Yep it's December all right.
The Simpsons Christmas special on VHS is basically the first episode of the series. I do own season three Of the Simpsons because that original release of season three has the Michael Jackson episode on it ,any new releases of season three they took it off for some strange odd reason.
10:05 Now you're singing the song of my people! Mindy and the Brain on the other hand was "meh" on a good day. It would have worked for an ep or two, but they ran it too long.
So glad I've moved to a state that doesn't get snow.
After 30 years dealing with the cold snow and having to shoveling it every year.
Don't have to deal with it anymore.
Weird I moved south and didnt deal with snow for 7 years and i missed it horribly. I moved back north 3 years ago and I have to say having proper seasons is so much better than just mild-hot-mild type weather patterns.
Here In The UK I always play The Black Adder Christmas Special and Charlie Brown as well as the Bottom and Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads Xmas episodes. Also somewhat bizarrely Buster Crabbe's Flash and Buck chapter plays :) - thats a nostalgia trip as the BBC used to play these in the late 70s in the Christmas Hols - I have heard YCDTOTV is an evolution of 2 70s UK British TV shows - You Must Be Joking and Pauline's Quirkes - Roger Price produced them all so maybe worth having a look at.
My understanding is that Roger Price intended YCDTOTV to be an extension of Laugh-In and Monty Python.
@@OddityArchive: At the least "Laugh-In" -- both that and YCDTOTV also used quick sketches, special segments, and a joke wall (in YCDTOTV's case, in the form of a row of lockers).
Hairy Fishnuts, Ben! (guess the source of this one)
Also, I'm pretty sure multiple TV Christmas episodes of the Jack Benny Program are available for free on here somewhere.
awesome video ben and yep sure is charismas alright and I also like Mr. bean and the anmainacs watched both when I was younger and a Christmas I always watch around this time is jingle all the way with Arnold and sin bad in it. Loved it when I was younger and still do.
I dislike that so many streaming services do not keep the original 4:3 format.
You Can't has a few DVDs out there. I have the documentary on it, which shows a few clips of the last ever episode called Project 131. (An episode I was lucky to catch, but has somehow been removed from the planet. Imdb doesn't even list it anymore.) I grew tf up on You Can't and loved just about every episode.
I have the documentary on DVD as well. I had a burned copy of 131 at one point, but not anymore--it was nothing special.
@@OddityArchive I know. It was just a reunion special with basically three cast members, and all they had left was the library shelves and the lockers (of which one cast member couldn't be a part of because she was pregnant at the time and wouldn't fit). The main set was chroma-keyed on screen I recall.
@@OddityArchive funny thing I just found out. Project 131 isn't on Imdb but the Max Headroom hack video IS. LOL
Nice Christmas vhs collection
I actually used to own that same Simpsons tape as a kid as the Simpsons is my favorite cartoon of all time
I also used to own Arthur’s perfect Christmas on vhs since Arthur is my second favorite cartoon of all time
I actually used to an the rankin bass holiday specials on vhs mainly the three main ones and a year without a Santa Claus now I own them on dvd and blu ray
I have the Garfield Holiday Collection DVD from Anderson Digital which has five primetime specials (Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, plus Garfield on the Town and Garfield in Paradise as bonuses) and there's a mildly interesting oddity: the menu doesn't link to the right episode for four out of five of the specials, so you gotta click on Garfield on the Town for Halloween (and vice-versa) and Garfield in Paradise for Thanksgiving (and vice-versa). Only A Garfield Christmas is in the right place on the menu.
I have three out of four of the Garfield primetime special DVDs from Fox, which I all found at Value Village (a.k.a. Savers) thrift stores in the summer of 2014, but I never could find the Fox Holiday special DVD so I had to get the Anderson Digital disk new from a Walmart Canada store during the Christmas 2014 shopping season. I'd still buy the Fox Garfield holiday special DVD if I saw it because, of the two specials I can compare with other DVDs (On the Town and Paradise), I swear the audio is cleaner on the Fox discs. There's a little more of a hiss with the audio on the Anderson Digital disk, not enough to really bother me if I'm just listening over TV or laptop speakers but it's noticeable if I wear reference headphones.
I finally got the Charlie Brown Christmas DVD from Value Village this past holiday season (just never got around to owning it before) and, yes, it is the 2008 release. (I hadn't yet seen this video when I bought it, I was just going for the most recent one of the two versions that were on the racks.) I wish they had included I Want a Dog for Christmas (I like Snoopy's lesser-known brother Olaf) but that one was its own DVD apparently.
I had that exact Blackadder set for years and later ripped the contents of every disc.... I didn't know the Christmas Carol thing was on there at all. :|
(Thankfully it's on Dailymotion)
Unless I haven't seen the episode its on, you need to get Ziggy's Gift, the only animated TV showing of Ziggy ever. (Sadly, unlike in the comics, he doesn't speak in this special.) There's also the Star Wars Holiday Special, which pops up on CZcams every year.
17:01 It's on Paramount+
I had a crush on Moose.
I know I did.
So if you’re a fan of Rowan Atkinson then you would like that show Black atter ?
You Can't Do That On Television was the funniest show on Nickelodeon.
I hate Garfield with a passion, though. 😾
Ben, how come you don't put up a Christmas tree?
Because OA keeps me busy to the point where'd I'd never enjoy it and it'd be just one more thing to take down and pack away later.
Whats up with hand stuff?
Blackadder!!!
Ever see Tiny toon Adventures? What about You're elected Charlie Brown? Producers altered show because of viewer anger over bulling of Charlie in episode.
It's Your First Kiss, Charlie Brown
Store 08044, Aurora Colorado. What's in there now?
Since there was more than 1 store in Aurora, It would be necessary to have a way to look up the address by store number (I can't kind any way). But if Benny boy remembers the location, a Google maps search/Street view would be best way to find out what there now. I wish some website compiled store numbers of defunct stores to help historic research. I used to work at K Mart 4010 (The 10th one ever!) It's now an Ollie's Bargain Outlet.
The Blockbuster I got the Simpsons tape from (near Buckley & Iliff, Aurora, CO) was a marijuana dispensary as of the time I moved away (and assume it still is). And, yes, I found that incredibly depressing.
@@jamesslick4790 if I can find the store based on store number, I've also found the address. I know the store was at 16840 Iliff Ave. The street view is 3.5 years old and thought it might not be current.
Of course it's a cannabis store... 😆
Even though it faced Buckley Ave., that has to be the one. There were no Blockbusters along Iliff.
EDIT #2: Checked Google Earth. Yep, that's it.
I love your videos Ben. I watched all of them but I just had to tell you that you have the most beautiful hands I've ever seen. Gorgeous! You could be a hand model for sure. Sexy!
One word for you - "Elves". See it.
