That's a neat little unit. What surprised me even more was the fact that there are analog channels still being broadcasted - I thought they were all phased out about a year or so ago.
I believe there is still one analog channel being broadcast from Mexico that was alive for a very long time since the US analog shutdown. You could still pick it up in this area (Southern California) but it was very weak. A year or two ago, I believe it's power was shut off. The vintage TV repair guys in the So Cal area (Shango & jpdylan) used/use it (if lucky) for their testing. Not sure if it's still alive.
London drugs sold there about 10 years ago for about 50 bucks. A bunch of t he guys at work had them. I have one in my truck but it has no tuner, just a DVD player with video input for games.
Haier is a pretty good quality Chinese producer of products. They have collaborated with a number of "big names" in the consumer goods sector and produce products using licensed technology from these collaborations. I had a "high end" Asko front loading washing machine that died after 2 yrs and 4 months. I got a Haier to replace it for less than it was going to cost for the repairs to the Asko. The Haier is a great replacement and is as good as the Asko it replaces.
I have been to the owner of Haier home. He actually lives in Canada. How do I know that? I was setting up his TV service, and I have a small Haier monitor for registering set top boxes when there are no TVs in the house. I pulled it out of my bag to set up his service and he got all excited and told me it was his company in China. (yes the guy in chinese) Told me that they were the 5th largest manufacture of LCD TVs in the world. You should see his house, and the cars he has. Lives on a golf course.
Hello, good, I've been following you for a long time on your channel, I think it's amazing and that video has caught my attention because I still carry my modernized pocket TV with an MP3 player and to watch movies with its memory card slot
What a heck of a score! Those are going for over $80 on eBay. Would be a neat idea to hang it on the wall and be able to view your CCTV channel at any time.
I have the exact same one, after seeing your video I dug it out after it was tucked away for some time. And yes the tactile rubbery finish had turned to a sticky goo. Did what you did and that pretty much cleaned it up. Charged er up and it plays fine. The only thing I don't remember putting it away with cracks in the plastic body. I may be able to glue it back up with methylene chloride. This solvent works well on styrene type plastic. That is if the goo didn't get into the cracks.
I've worked on one of these, my mother in law's. Same issue with the sticky coating, used isopropyl alcohol to clean it off. Not the greatest tuner, but it is portable. Battery pack is almost worthless. But it is cute, a basic TV.
Beautiful old TV with good clarity. These do wel with die hard campers that have small spaces and use only 5-12v appliances that run 4-10 Watts max. I have a similar model by AGFA with a little bigger screen and a builtin DVD player. No remote, so it is a hassle to operate sometimes. It charges at 10 Watts and when charged it uses only 6 Watts to operate but runs 4 hours on a battery charge. I got mine powered on a simple solar system with a 30 Watt panel and 8 LifePO4 cells (12.8v) with passthrough charging running all day if daylight is sufficient. I use it to watch CNN all day through a SATBox via AV in. These are marvels.
Most of the television stations have standard definition and high definition channels and and hence the reason why you think you have doubled in channels. We had the same thing that happened in 2014 when Australian television stations re shuffled and moved there transmitting frequency. Gone is band 5 and as you said to make way for future exspantion ( mobile phone ?? ) As for digital reception a lot of problems are caused poor quality or cheap cable and fittings. I never use RG59 anymore and the only cable i use is RG6 Quad cable ( 305 mtr pull packs ) and has a solid dialectric, that and a cooper clad steel wire as the centre signal wire, this cable also had very good shielding . The same with the fly lead, these i make out of the same RG6 Quad cable. Poor cable can also account for missing channels
i have that same model my father bough one those many years ago to use a portable tv when he used to travel and do bus runs watch analog local tv and digital channels not bad tv still works good picture quality is not to bad .
What i've found works pretty well is sprinkling talcum powder over the unit and leave it for a day or so. The talc absorbs the moisture and disappears.
I find it interesting how some TV's, & DTV converters show the image of a Satellite Dish, instead of a TV antenna, in the channel scan menu. I wonder if that has something to do with them being made in countries where using a satellite dish is the only way of receiving TV signals. In the US, OTA TV was reduced all the way down to Ch. 36.
To remove the sticky stuff I used a solution of laundry borax, e.g. 20 Mule Team. A lot easier than alcohol and it didn't remove lettering. The solution worked best when mixed well so no solid borax particles remained.
What a bargain 😀 That sticky muck is on everything, one of my torches became sticky and under the crap was a black shiney plastic that cleaned up perfect. Stupid manufacturers!.
Saw a boombox with digital TV built in at goodwill some guy was looking at it dropped it and cracked in half. Wonder if it would of been any good for like off grid.. if he hadn't of broke it
Only thing that stinks about these is you can’t move around or your signal is gone. Hopefully in the US and Canada can get ATSC 3.0 so that won’t be a problem anymore.
Afaik 49 here as they took the 600mhz spectrum for 5g. They tool 50 - 59 a few years ago for 700mhz LTE Soon they will be forcing them back to VHF as UHF more valuable for phone bands due to small antennas and longer range then the GHz bands.
I got one of these, and mine is turning into goo as well. I also got a similar TV made by a different company called Auvio that doesn't have the rubber coating. Rather than take the time to de-goo the Haier, I'll probably just get rid of it and keep the Auvio.
Which antenna did you put up, Dave? The one I put up recently is anything but omnidirectional. I’m on the north shore, so should get roughly the same number of channels as you…
I really enjoy the bit where 1/10 of the channels where I live are shopping channels selling rebranded Chinese Specials for horrible prices. Did I say "enjoy"? I meant "hate".
@@spacewolfjr That is one way to do it. I usually allow the covered gas grill to fill with gas for several minutes, then I open the cover, put my face close to the grate and quickly light the grill. This removes all facial hair and forehead hair! Be careful and only do this with medical supervision!😁
I have that TV and I lost the antenna and the battery is bulging so I removed it and I haven't got a replacement I did find an antenna on eBay but it doesn't fit in the storage compartment and it still works and I have the remote, AC adapter, Cigarette lighter cord, AV cables and yes it is digital
Just like mine. (Haven't taken The battery cover off) The antenna that came with it does not pull in any stations. I live too far from broadcast stations and only an outside mast antenna works. The little tv works with that, but it's not portable if it has to be tied to a cable to work. That's why i bought it (2011) because it was a digital TV. I need to try elbow grease again on mine. The sticky stuff is stubborn. I also have a Haier 6 inch box fan, and Haier Chest freezer.
That soft-touch plastic is disgusting. Finger oils break it down in no time, so of course every remote is made from it. I had a set of nice Mirage omnisats that had gotten so sticky they were collecting all the cat hair in my apartment. I had to soak them in IPA to remove it. Dell is still selling professional-grade laptops with the palm rests coated in the stuff.
When I worked in the TV business we used to have a spray called dulling spray. Designed to reduce reflectivity of highly reflective surfaces such as brass or steel or something because the television light of course would reflect into the cameras and the cameras of the day all use pickup tubes which flared like crazy plus it could damage the tubes we had to spray that stuff on everything. you can imagine how upset musicians were when they came into play in the studio and we had to spray their saxophones or trumpets or guitars down with going spray so they wouldn't flare out on the cameras and then they had to clean them up after they weren't very happy.
I used 91% isopropyl on mine, it did a decent job of removing the stickiness. I did have to wait between cleaning sessions to let it air off a bit so I could tell where the remaining residue was, but not bad.
That's a neat little unit. What surprised me even more was the fact that there are analog channels still being broadcasted - I thought they were all phased out about a year or so ago.
He said it was cable. Some systems may still run analog. And I'm sure at least the security cameras are his own modulators.
All the analog signals are in house modulators. Even the channels that come from digital. This is for the old analog only TV's in the house.

"...common product known as elbow grease." 😄 What does the container look like? I turned the house upside down, and can't find any. 😜
I have one of those that I bought new. Very useful for focusing analog cameras and a "power out" TV set.
What a neat little tv and input monitor 👌

there is a formulation that doesn't melt like that but has the same feel. it sucks that they bothered to use the cheaper crappier one.

That rubberized coating (at least in vehicles) was meant to increase "perceived initial value" or some other bullshit when new.
Made me think it was rubber reversion. We have an old BlackBerry Curve that has horrible reversion and it looked similar
