Do I Still Love These Plants? | Rating Common Houseplants

  • In this video we’re going to look back at some of the very first houseplants I got back when I first started my houseplant journey. These are mostly common houseplants that have either lost its popularity of have been forgotten by the plant community. I thought why not give these cool houseplants some screen time here on CZcams and let’s review, react and rate them to see if I still love these houseplants or not.
    If you’re new to your plant journey and looking for some ideas or suggestions on which plants to get then, this video is for you.
    Some of these houseplants have gone through quiet a bit of change since getting them over three years ago. While others have grown from baby plant to a beautiful large houseplant I can’t live without, others are not doing so well and can probably be ok to just let it cross over to the other side. Lol

      I do love my Ficus Elastica . . . it was the only one in the store and in someone elses shopping cart. I stalked their cart for an hour until the other shopper abandoned it in the canned goods aisle.

    For many years my "thing" has been to cultivate a wide variety of fairly common plants, nurturing them until they become absolutely stunning because they're so incredibly huge and lush and vibrant with health. I love all the different shapes and patterns and colors and textures, and also arranging them artistically around my house. It's not trendy but I'm happy anyway.

      I feel like they’re popular for a reason. They grow well, fewer pests, less care needed. I used to poo-poo the golden pothos, but someone gave me a cutting a year ago and it’s already putting out these awesome, huge leaves. My goal is to get them to fenestrate one day!

    My whole plant collection consists of a zz, cebu blue, golden pothos, marble queen, n’joy pothos, dracena marginata, dracena cintho, black coral sanseveria, dracena bamboo, sanseveria cylindrica, sanseveria zylanica. As you can see I am a huge fan of common plants as they are hard to fail you, and I think they have such a gorgeous aesthetic

    I have a huge collection of plants that span the popularity/availability spectrum. Honestly, I'm fawning all over my more common plants these days. Everywhere you look online it's all about the most exotic, the most expensive, etc. It's to the point that I'm almost tired of seeing them. So many common plants are common for a reason, they are beautiful and they have stood the test of time.

    I feel proud of myself over your ZZ. I even had to rewind to confirm that you said you bought it in 2017. Are you sure? I bought my ZZ in a 6" pot from Ikea. But it was in 2019 and it looks older than yours... fuller and seemingly taller. I didn't know what I was doing so a few days after bringing it home I repotted it into an 8". Thankfully, it survived my ignorance😊 Now I have a baby ZZ I propagated from a leaf that snapped off the same season I brought my ZZ home. Didn't know what I was doing when I put the tiny stem in water. To my surprise after many weeks I noticed a bump and weeks later, voila! tiny roots began to sprout. In 2020 I potted it in soil and for a yr it sat there seemingly doing nothing. Finally this year it's put out a new stem. How exciting! 💕

      That’s awesome. Yeah mine is almost four years old. It was much smaller when I got it and hast grown a few new stalks and got taller. I do have mine is low to medium light so it definitely is growing slower. It can probably benefit a repot similar to what you’re done. Thanks for sharing .

      @@CrazyPlantGuy Ya, I'm finally realizing the difference light intensity makes. I'm thinking now the reason my ZZ propagation finally shot out a stalk is because I moved it from a low light place to an East facing window. Also after watching your vid where you talked about your Pilea Peperomia one of your subs suggested mine needed more light, which is why it wasn't doing anything even though I had it on a table near a window. I then moved it up a floor onto a dresser against an East facing window. It is thriving now...babies and all. What a difference!

    My ratings
    --> Pearls and Jade Pothos - 9
    Pothos don't get enough praise. So beautiful. Cheap and easy to care for. Everybody needs at least one or two Pothos.
    --> Bird of paradise - 1
    Nope. Never. Always looks like a mess. Ok for outside but I would never have it as a houseplant.
    --> ZZ Plant - 5 (green) / 8 (Raven) / 8 (Zenzi)
    The green standard ZZ is nice but I could do without. I much more prefer the Raven and super cute Zenzi.
    --> Ficus Elastica Burgundy - 8
    Every Ficus Elastica (Tineke, Berlize, Burgundy, Altissima...) is a 8-10 in my opinion.
    --> Pilea Peperomioides - 2
    No thank you. Never liked it. I own one but I would never buy another one. At least I got it for dirt cheap back then.
    --> Sansevieria Whalefin - 7
    I love how yours looks so clean, futuristic and sculptural. Almost like something from another planet. A 7 just because mine grows soooo slowly.
    --> Hoya Macrophylla - 7
    I don't own one but I plan to buy one soon... very soon... maybe today. 🤣 Rating could go up after I receive it.
    --> Aloe Vera - 5
    Yes it's nice. I like it but just like the green ZZ it doesn't blow my mind. Now I wonder why I have 3 of them in my house.😂 I guess because they are cheap and easy to care for.
    --> Jade Plant - 6
    I like your Jade. Mine is at least 25-30 years old and very big so MY plant is a 10 for me but the plant in general is only a 6 in my opinion.

They shine , they reach, just love "em! I am thinking of getting a Ficus,,your's look so good! I am in Winnipeg, I have West and South facing windows,,they are 92" tall my windows! Do you think a Ficus would thrive in these conditions?

    I really do not like ZZ plants, lol. They look like random stalks thrown into a vase. I am however one of those that still love the Pilea a lot and I absolutely agree on your idea to cut it back and put it into water so you'll have 2 thriving plants :) That Aloe is gorgeous and gives me hope for my 4 small stumps that don't do anything. Also love the Jade plant, the bonsai shape is cool

    I paid around 15€ for my zz (17 US $) and I absolutely love it. It's really lush and about 1.20m high. It gets very little light but it is thriving, I keep it on a nightstand, so its leaves are the first thing I see in the morning and the last thing I see before I fall asleep :)

    P&j pothos. 9. Remains compact and the coloration stands out when near darker foliage giving a nice contrast. Bird of paradise always better outdoors. Ficus burgandy perfect, my outdoor one looks great potted, 12 feet tall. Pilea peperomeoides, i prefer them growing like the bottom of your boy. Ive just put 2 tall ones into one pot and plan allowing babies to cover the bottom. I've gifted all other babies. Jade looks great when trimmed back the structural branches remain,mostly, but they dont look as bare as when left to grow

    I have such a love/hate relationship with my Macrophylla. It always starts to put out a set of two leaves and always drops one of them. So I just have a long stem of one-sided growth. 🤨
    I love the foliage on it, but I want to punch it sometimes too.

    Hiya Christian! My favorite one in your video is the whale fin! I'm looking to get my hands on one soon! Which is so funny because I originally never liked them when I first saw them. I like the pilea, but it struggled during a transition to LECA, it got this fine fuzzy mold my the stem. Eww. The whole reason I wanted to transfer it was because I could see teeny tiny white bugs (I think they might be spring tails because I've seen it in another CZcamsrs video and of somebody commented on it) I would say you should chop it because it's to top heavy now, and remove the pups and let them live their own life LOL. I chopped mine and have been trying to propagate it in water but I end up having to keep chopping it shorter and even removing some of the bark texture because I keep seeing this weird mucousy slime! Yuck! Keep trying to save it, we'll see I guess!!
    I would say my least favorites would be the aloe, Bird of Paradise, jade, and the hoya (I know there's a lot of interest in Hoyas but I just don't get it lol)
