In the grocery stores, GMO foods have a 5 digit USDA code. But, 4 digit codes, like 4032 for seedless water mellons, are "normal" seeds. I have only seen 5 digit corn and beans, I think. I believe Rutgers tomatoes are OP highbred with a 100 year long history. Also, many commercial growers still use Rutgers for several reasons. This is an excellent video.

Excellent information! Thanks! I have heard that about labels but haven't really checked it out...I will definitely do some looking next time I'm at the grocery store. I honestly try to avoid most produce at the grocery store when I can but I do buy a few things there...though honestly mostly organic frozen veggies as most "fresh" produce isn't so fresh here by the time it gets here lol! I wonder do frozen packagas have any indication of GMO as far as a code number goes?

I have read but can't verify that while hybrids most of the time grow and produce better, OP tends to be uptake more out of the soil and be more nutrient dense. From experience can't say I disagree with that. One thing I can verify that saved seeds adapt to your soil and climate, growing better over time, which besides saving money are a great plus.
One of my favorite things about pre-WWII varieties, that was when produce was alot more locally grown with less trucking and few big supermarket chains. And besides earliness and production, people wanted taste, and that's what they bred for. Now it's for looks and shipping and the rest gets thrown overboard. It's sad for all our technological sophistication we have given up so much when it comes to food.

Totally agree with you! I believe as well that OP and Heirloom plants give produce that is not only more flavorful, but also more nutrient dense!
