I love to flip through the seed catalogs before ordering online. There's just something about having those mags in your hands. Then again I still receive a newspaper because I prefer that over reading the paper online. Old habits are hard to break, now get off my lawn. 😉

The catalog definitely determines my choices, I'm not big on online catalog perusing. I might order online, but I have researched with the paper catalog.

Have you ever tried a "zebra" tomato? They stay green with a smear of a light yellow when they are riped. Very meaty type and not too much seeds. I think it's from Hungary ( my friend is Hungarian and gave me some) . I love it!
We tried some type of zebra tomato one year. It was darker, but had the striping. It had a very thick wall on it that we didn't care for. But sounds like it was different than what you grew.
Hey Travis! We're up in Athens GA and grew Baker Creek Buena Mulata peppers last summer and they did AWESOME. Just beautiful colors, super productive, and excellent for making hot sauces. Hope you try them out and have good luck! 🌶️

Totally Tomatoes is one of my favorites. They have the best selection of determinate tomatoes, and they are easily identified. Don't forget to try Black Sea Man if you have some space available. Thanks for sharing your process. It takes a former seed sourcer to think to check the breeder's sites first.
I saw that one on MiGardener's website and thought I remembered someone suggesting it. Might have to get it.
I believe I could have sat on that tailgate and delivered the same video almost word for word. I use a master notebook to list those varieties that I´ll always grow and then use the breeder websites to identify likely candidates to source out. That is mostly a gut decision. I tell myself that I´m employing analytics to select for flavor, yield, vigor, and disease resistance but there is always some tomato who winks her eye at me from the computer screen and I cannot help moving yet another seed pack over to the shopping cart.

Start with the list of crops you want to grow. That will definitely help. You're always going to pick a few stinkers every year, but that's just gardening. Keep the good ones and replace the stinkers every year.

We have been growing the buena mulata peppers for three years they are good and mild when purple and when they turn red they get spicy! So fun to grow they make alot!

baker creek has two new okra varieties directly from west africa this year. i got them. i'm a bit obsessed with okra right now.

Have u tried Osborne seeds. They sell in a bit bigger packets that r in foil with resealable tops. Read up on the Chef's Choice series of tomatoes. My favorite tomato is Bella Rosa for a determinate heavy producers
I've heard of Osborne, but not sure I've ever purchased any from them. If you like Bella Rosa, you should try Red Snapper and Roadster if you haven't. I like those two just a little better.

Just found an on-site seed company. Experimental Farm Network. Made some interesting choices this AM.
I just took a look at their site. That's some neat stuff for sure. I'm really interested in those collards. Might try those next fall.
The Thelma Sanders Sweet Potato caught my eye along with the, bananapeno, alpine poblano, and also the collard collection. Always fun to see something different out there.
We also got a couple of packages of the Giant Crimson seeds. We have y'alls elephant garlic and the Nootka Rose garlic. So excited to see how things grow from the East to the West. We're gonna try some Luffa over a small trellis just outside our kitchen window. I'm truly going to expand my growing here at our HOA neighborhood. Not sure if we have space for everything/seeds I've got. But, I'm very hopeful. Small gardening space here. 7a-7b West. Wishing everyone a successful gardening year!

I love my catalogs! I can lay them all out and compare varieties, costs, amount of seeds, etc. Receiving my catalogs is the best part of the Christmas season - and beyond.
AND I KEEP MINE...only.time i EVER got.rid if any was when i moved...and then i kept about half...lol..love.catlogues as i sit watching tv or in the morning with the birds and coffee outside..
If the seed companies combined your wishlist scanning idea with an app, they could get real-time, individualized data about what people are interested in. That seems like one heck of a value for the seed co, with substantial benefit to customers. Win-win.
It could be a very powerful tool. It would take considerably more time designing the catalog that way, but could be worth it.
i got some stuff from sow true seeds recently. haven't planted them yet.

Ugh of all the companies, why MI Gardener? They whine so much and can be very unprofessional, I just can’t support them. They don’t fit with your positive brand at all. Loved seeing a few other companies you get catalogues from. The seed catalogue analysis would be fascinating. A lot of innovation could be had. They need to make sure to measure average revenue per order though. Although I will order from the same company each year, their catalog always helps me spend more. Here is another catalog I liked this year “Seeds n such”. Great video, watched till the end it was so interesting!

Travis, it looks like MIGardener got you in the door with his Giant Crimson Tomato loss leader and used the "plus selling" technique to build a fat little order. Good marketing on his part. I'm always leery of those old timey giant tomato varieties. You might get three big old tomatoes total per season, and they can be all cat faced and gnarly and with no disease resistance whatsoever. You may want to circle back on a future show to clarify why you prefer determinate over indeterminate tomatoes.
Yeah I'm not super confident in that Giant Crimson variety. But had several viewers wanting me to try it, so I bit. It will get the true vigor test down here to see just how good it is.
Scanning would be amazing since most seed sites are a nightmare to navigate and like a previous commenter mentioned it's like navigating a dictionary - you don't know what you don't know! Great video!

I have purchased seeds from MI Gardener in the past and was happy with my purchase. Very affordable and great variety. After watching this video, I purchased some more seeds from them....a woman can never have too many tomato seeds!

Here is a funny seed story for ya...7 years ago i got about 35 packs of flower mix for a penny a packet at a local dollar store. I.never out them out until 2022..worst year EVER in.Texas. i kinda sorted them out during the winter..anyway..got a wonder crop of rudibeckia but threw the unsorted ones in a sort of a unused area of the garden ..well. i got.a.four foot tall straight strong stem one..white feather celosia perfect for cut flowers...was talking to the local fresh flower farmer...who is dying this year cause of heat and no water...and she wants those seeds...bad..so im growing them out for her for next year...keep your fingers.crosses..i doubt those cheap ass seeds were hybrids..

Only thing i enjoyed more than seed catalogs was the old sears and jc penny.catalogs ..i would just sit around the house and shop for hours. I got seed catalogs from 10 or more years ago..

Thanks for that! I made my seed order in December because my company had a Boxing Day sale, the shipping was free. When my seeds came I noticed some of the seeds were packed for 2021, to be sold by Dec 2021! From now on I’m going to wait until January or February to make sure I get fresh seed, just as you said you do! Another thing I noticed was that most of the seed packed for 2022 was grown in the USA as opposed to all over the world as usual, maybe that was an adjustment to supply chain issues. I like keeping production on the continent!

Travis, I think your scan idea is GENIUS!! Best idea of the century. Well at least since those codes have been available!. My problem is that my eyes are bigger than my land. :/ I love getting catalogs. I now give myself a budget. That part is a work in progress.

I would like to know which seed suppliers specialize in seeds adapted to Zone 8.
Not aware of any that exist. Keep in mind that the seeds that all these companies carry are sourced from all over the world. So it's not like there are specific varieties for specific zones. Now on the commercial side of things, the breeders will have varieties designed for specific zones and planting times. But those are high-end varieties that are not always accessible to the backyard gardener.
Nicely done Travis. I’ve always grown indeterminate heirloom tomatoes but I think you may have convinced me to give some of the determinate hybrids a shot this year. These vids came out at just the right time, as I received several seed catalogs on Monday and a couple more today. I do enjoy flipping through them!! Thanks for sharing the breeder info too - that will come in handy when trying to make the variety selections.

My seed order came in today from True Leaf I buy in bulk and do multiple plantings plus give some plants away, but I buy my seed potatoes in 50 pound bags and get them from the local feed store. Another good show

I've plant your Stonewall cucumbers an I see only flowers with the small cucumbers . Can I plant another cucumber variety like straight eight to help pollinate an still have good fruit?
They're not mine, but maybe I can help. Stonewall is a gynoecious variety which means they produce all female flowers. Most seed companies include 10-12% of a pollinator species in the seed packets. But this means that you'd have to plant a decent amount of seeds in the packet to ensure you've got the pollinator (and thus male flowers) present. If you only planted a few seeds, that's probably why you only have female flowers. Planting a standard cucumber variety like straight eight would definitely help.

This is totally off topic but maybe you should do a video about your marketing business. What kind of customers do you serve? What do you do, what do you not do?
I have all different types of clients/businesses. Most of what I do is website building, website SEO, social media marketing, and helping local businesses take their efforts online. I'm a little hesitant to talk about it too much because I'm a little maxed out on what I can handle as a one-man operation.

@@matthewmcclendon5308 Yes that's true. But specifically regarding seed ordering, they have their "tried and tested" varieties that they know are worth going back to. I'm basically just ordering dozens of seed packets not having a clue if they'll live up to the hype. I'm hoping the exact variety is not *that* important compared to just planting things in a reasonably good location at more or less the right time and doing the basic maintenance and care correctly, which I think I've gotten a hang of now.

Hi Clive, I think one thing that will help you "weed through" the mountain of seed information is look for varieties suited to your particular area's conditions. You may not know everything about your growing area yet, but you know if you live in a particularly hot area or drought prone area or how your pest pressure is. For instance, I live in Alabama and am always on the lookout for any varieties that stress their heat/humidity tolerance. Folks in Maine may not have that same concern, so take regional characteristics into consideration. That same gardener in Maine might be searching for "shorter days to maturity" varieties because of their growing season, while that's barely even a concern for me. Make sense?

Totally Tomatoes is a great place! I get a paste tomato called Saucy Lady there and I like it more than Amish paste and the more packs you buy, the less the cost of each pack. They also carry oxheart tomato seeds. One of my favorite catalogs is Fedco Seeds and Supplies. It is a black and white catalog, but it is humorous. Another is Harris Seeds with lots of variety and reminds me of Johnny's. Enjoyed the video and who doesn't like talking about seeds!!!!!
I like Fedco's website. They have a good variety selection. I also use Harris Seeds site quite a bit.
I've also found a very useful purpose of seed catalogs. I currently due to circumstances beyond my control haven't much space for growing, but fortunately have many around me that does that's more than happy to supply. I like to roast a variety of Veggies on the grill in summer, if I can learn the actual variety of what I'm using I'll cruise the various catalogs and find that one and use that page among others I'm using to start my charcoal, that way they are still serving a needed purpose.

If a seed company sends me a catalog without me asking, I WILL order from them. I love flipping through my books and flagging off pages and then using it to place my order quickly online.
Great video again. Myself ordering seeds is worse thing of gardening minus disease and weather destruction. Wish there were a reliablish one stop shop for them.
The marketplace competition has forced most seed companies to carve their own niche for which they specialize. As a result, not every company always has every single thing we want.
I spreadsheet my garden plot in excel by square footage and then I can color code and fill the cells with what plants will be where. The older I get the more hybrids I buy and just have small plots of heirlooms because I know they won't last or produce like my hybrids will. Trial areas will get their own sections. Bayer has all those new plus releases which I want to try this year so those will make up most of my trial tomatoes for 2022. Buena mulata was a great plant for me last year. Similar to an early cayenne with a sweeter, different flavor. They turn red like a cayenne when ripe but prolific as heck and look pretty neat. I mixed with cayennes and did fermented hot sauce with them.
Yep. It appears most seed companies are carrying those "plus" editions by Bayer/Seminis this year.

I've been buying MIgardener seeds for a few years and I always get good germination and the varieties are true to expectations. Their prices and shipping are reasonable and seed quantities are good for a backyard gardener.

I have to check the shipping costs against what my feed store has to offer. Or any of the local seed stores in the area. Those shipping costs add up fast
Companies like migardner, and baker creek have free shipping with a minimum order.
Our local feed store is notorious for having old seed that's stored in wooden bins as opposed to a temperature controlled environment. As a result, their seeds usually don't germinate very well.
@@LazyDogFarm I found that out too. Fortunately I found one that keeps their inventory current. But you are very correct. Some, many feed stores don't change out the inventory in those bins. You are so correct on how the seeds are stored

Hybrid tomatoes are great if you want to do a lot of canning.

Hey y'all, I kinda like catalogs only because it is something tangible to hold. Then I go online to order. My process is very much like yours. For the big producers for canning ect the hybrids make some sense. Heirlooms are more for eating fresh as a treat not really available. I have all my favorite seed companies bookmarked. I have an account and a wishlist. Then when I order I might order from several different sellers just to support them. The more we all know we can select the right seeds and varieties for the right reasons and thus be more successful. Thank you for this video..take care bye for now

I ordered 5 pounds of that mustard seed you talked about in another video. I really like the Baker Creek catalog, I grow all heirloom plants. I ordered some of that Temptress corn seed from Hoss. Corn is the only thing I grow that doesn’t have to be heirloom.
Temptress is a great variety.
I mainly use 2 seed companies the first is Mlgardener but unfortunately Luke does not always have the variety I am looking for which is when I go to Baker Creek. I do request a catalog from Baker Creek so when I have a snow day like today, I can look at it and see if something “catches my eye.” You had me a little worried when you were talking about not over-buying seeds. I can’t ever remember a gardener who didn’t overbuy a little but I guess buying seeds that “catch your eye” could be considered the same 😊 Nice to know you are in the same boat as most of us, as always thank you for sharing great info!

I wasn't sure if I was going to order from them. I mean yeah, I enjoy Luke's channel, but ultimately I just want good selection at a good price for seeds, wherever those end up coming from. But they're offering a lot of the most popular varieties from rareseeds for only $2 instead of $3 so it's a good deal. Just need to check how the shipping to Canada compares.
We'll see how they do down here where the conditions for tomatoes are pretty tough.

I enjoy looking at the seed catalogues and sometimes I will order but I go online to their website and order there. I learned a lesson a few years back and I don't think I'll be quick to repeat it. I ordered some Seminole pumpkin seeds from a seller on Ebay. I don't know if he knew that they would cross with his butternut and not breed true, but he does now lol. They are in the same family and what I got was a skinny long butternut from his Seminole.
I don't buy seeds on Ebay or Amazon. Those sellers aren't held to the same regulations that the larger companies are.

If you order seeds online from the companies I showed today, you're getting seeds from a foreign country most likely. Many of the seeds sold in the US are grown overseas.

It is a bit daunting as a third year gardener to know I have some experience but that there are so many choices out there. I’m ok with failure as part of learning, but failure too much is discouraging. All the best to you and the fam.
The only way to learn is to keep trying. We all fail. But as long as you learn from those failures, you'll be just fine.
I'm a second year gardener. That comes with much greater awareness of all the companies and varieties, but scarcely more experience about which ones are any good.

@@tommathews3964 Do they have people from more northern zones there? I'm in southern Ontario zone 6 - our average frost free period is fairly long (180 days) but still fairly cool (warmer than the PNW but cooler than the Mid-Atlantic and most of the US Midwest).

For a few years, I've asked around for Supersteak tomatoes. Nobody can tell me where I can buy slips or seeds. The produce stand where we've bought them from in years past, don't know. It's changed owners over the years and the slips they have now are mislabeled. It says Supersteak, but the tomatoes look more like some type of round, Roma tomato. Lol
It could be that "Supersteak" was never the original breeder name for that particular variety. It was given the name "Supersteak" as a marketing idea and that makes things confusing.
So, is there a way to find out the variety? At 41 years old, it's all my grandparents bought to plant ever since I was born. Everyone has mentioned beefsteak, but I've never seen beefsteak as huge as to what I'm talking about.
Seeds n such has a tomato called Burpees super steak Hyb, says there most reliable variety, now over 30 years old.
Interesting stuff, I'm still waiting on you to slip up and say what is the biggest variety tomato you plan on growing. I still have plans to grow the biggest tomato this year. 🤠LOL
I haven't really decided yet. Although maybe for it to be a fair competition, we should grow the same one. I haven't purchased any particularly giant varieties yet, but I'm open to ideas.
I purchased some Hybrid Big Zac seeds just to play with and I got some Kellogg's Breakfast also. I've never grown either one. Let me know what you think.
Travis: Another great video....thanks! One thing you didn't mention is shipping cost for seed (or I missed it if you did). I especially like that Baker Creek is NOT charging shipping for shipments into the United States. This really comes handy when you discover that you forgot to include something in an order from them or another company. You can order several or just one packet and you won't be charged shipping. And it appears that their shipping is much faster than in the past. Used to be, for me anyway, some companies seemed pretty slow to ship...that was not good especially if it came to the time you needed to get the seeds in the ground or in the greenhouse. Hoss was the fastest for me in the past...many times I ordered on Friday or Saturday, and come Monday the seeds were in my mailbox... Now I'm getting almost just as fast from Baker Creek.
BTW, Baker Creek has two catalogs...one is the one you showed (Rare Seed Catalog) and the other one is called The Whole Seed Catalog. The one you showed is free, but the latter one cost $12.95. If you like to look at pictures and read all about it, that last catalog is cool to read through. Many pages are totally dedicated to only 1 or 2 items. It's a thick and heavy catalog...could use it as a door stop, LOL! I made a mistake and ordered one and just before receiving it, found that I had already gotten one.... SO Travis, if you don't have one, I'd be glad to ship my extra to you (no cost of course). 😊
Oh, and I'm not advocating so much Baker Creek, I don't order as much from there as I used to...I'm buying more and more hybrids from other sources... I just like that you can find some interesting seeds that are grown in other places in the world.... And yes, like, Ali Baba...LOL!
Baker Creek is really smart by doing both of those catalogs. I listened to a presentation by their marketing person at a meeting one time. They use the $12.95 catalog (which they sell lots of) to fund their smaller catalog that's free. That way, their catalogs costs are basically a wash.
Travis, this tip may not work so much for you since you have 30' rows and 1000 sq/ft blocks, but "Seeds N' Such" has some of the lower prices per packet and less seeds per packet on many of their choices. For smaller garden growers that may save them some money while letting them grow more varieties. I've not had any issues with germination of their seeds and I'm on my 3rd year ordering from them. I have also carried most varieties forward and had them grow just fine the next year. For something like tomatoes, I may plant 2 to 4 plants of a variety, but like to grow a number of varieties each year (especially tomatoes and pepper varieties). If I'm only planting 2 plants of each, I really don't need a packet of 30 seeds for each variety. This year, I'm trying Bella Rosa, Roadster and Red Snapper tomatoes. Also Seeds N' Such are now in Augusta, GA.
I've heard of Seeds n' Such, but did not know they were in Augusta. Looks like they have a new website too!
David---The guy that owns Seeds 'N Such used to own Totally Tomatoes and Shumway's before that. His seed packs can cost a third of what you'll pay at Johnny's or Burpee's for the same cultivars. Red Snapper was my trial winner this past season.
Love these kind of videos Travis. I was trying to find the “NEC” catalog everywhere online without success, and then watched the video again and listened closely to hear you say “NE Seed”. Hahaha I think my hearing is getting worse.

Love the past videos. I always have a Forrest Gump moment when you get to explaining things. I do like a catalog. But I've noticed we don't get the ones we used to when my Father in law was alive and was ordering from them. I do like the scanning idea.i have took notes on the varieties that you, your dad, Sarah and Kevin, and Danny and Wanda suggest. I do like your idea as well on your planning method of ordering. I have ordered seed from HT, True leaf, and I have some in a cart with baker creek. I had to find Sarah's favorite roma tomato from someone else. Oh I just thought of something after watching the video of your mom cooking greens for your dad. Now deer ate all my greens. But since I planted purple top turnips, is there a chance that the turnips themselves would have survived and grown? I've been at work all day thinking about that. I hope that at least they survived. I'm definitely going to be trying those red snapper and I think you said roadster? Happy belated Birthday to your beautiful wife! I look forward to planting potatoes in February!

I'll get most of them from Steele more than likely. I may try a new variety or two from somewhere else, but I get the tried and true varieties from Steele.
Often the shipping fees make the difference for me. If I have to spend $99 to get free shipping, that's just a no go. Or when the shipping cost is as much as two packets of seed. On the other hand, some places always have free shipping, so if I hear about a variety I want, I can just jump on there and order it without the added shipping cost.
Makes sense. When considering shipping costs, it's also important to consider how the company is shipping it. Some of the places with free shipping are often shipping via a slower service, while the ones that charge for shipping are shipping everything USPS First Class or Priority so it gets to you quicker.

Any cool-season cover crop should help with that. I really like the Balansa Clover that we got from Green Cover Seed. I'd recommend that.

If it’s peas I can shell and cook like my wife would find in a can or frozen I am open to suggestions. Perhaps both! My grow area isn’t but about the size of one of your plots so yield in a small space is key. Keep up the good work and again I’m open to suggestions.
i ordered a fairly large order though southern seed exposure and never received a shipped email tried to emaiol them and never got a response ended up having to call the bank and stop the payment

For the past six years, I have been trying to get seeds for a Turkish variety of winter squash known as Adapazari. The only company listing the variety keeps showing “Out of Stock” and NEVER sends a notice when seeds are back in stock.. For the past four years, I’ve also bien trying to get seeds for Kelsae onion. Seeds became available through that company, but sold out before I could respond - less than 2 hours! You have more “connections” than I do, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Unfortunately, I'm not plugged in on those more rare varieties. Most of my experiences are with the high-end breeders. Hope you're able to find those varieties though!

In the past I always got as much as I can from johnnys but will not anymore, 2020 i ordered jan 3rd and got my seeds promptly, but also ordered taters the didnt ship till to late to plant due to pandemic.... I did find out they kept shipping the big buyers throughout the whole time and just left out the small buyers, so I am done with them, the dont need me as a buyer.
Just a little tip ... Don't buy potatoes, sweet potato slips, onion plants, etc. from places like Johnny's or any other online seed companies. Buy them directly from the source -- Steele Plant Company, Dixondale, etc. That's where they're coming from anyways. Johnny's has all those orders dropshipped from the supplier and you'll get them much quicker and better service when ordering from the source.
i've never ordered from mi gardener. i didn't like an interaction he had with someone who was pointing out a problem with something he was saying in a video. so, i never ordered from him. don't care how cheap his seeds are, he was rude. i'd rather go to dollar tree or lowe's for some cheap seeds.

Johnny's Seeds, Select Seeds (mostly flowers) and Swallowtailgardenseeds are three of my favorites seed companies. I love looking at Johnny's catalog. Not a fan of Baker Creek.
What don't you like about Baker Creek? They're one of the suppliers I was looking at. Not sure if I'll go with them in the end, but I do like that they have a lot of customer reviews which can help narrow down your varieties.
If you like flower seeds, you should check out Sunflower Selections or GeoSeed. Both of those have great high-end flower varieties that tend to outperform the run-of-the-mill stuff you find in most seed catalogs.

Love your videos and content, but your omission of Hoss Tools as a seed source was obvious, and saddened me, especially as it was you and your dad’s videos that inspired me to order many of my seeds from Hoss Tools.
If you like their seeds, definitely keep ordering from there. We were specifically talking about catalog companies in this particular video and the prior one.

I stopped buying from MIgardener for two reasons. 1) The Germination rate is poor. 2) He had posted a photo of a Fish Pepper that he was harvesting except it wasn’t Fish peppers. I knew because I was growing some. He had grown and harvested a tri colored bell pepper. And literally everyone that knew anything about peppers responded and let him know that wasn’t Fish peppers. He never took the post down or corrected himself. A Fish Pepper looks like a jalapeño shape not a bell pepper. And it’s a hot pepper. So, the fact he didn’t know the difference as a seed supplier bothered me a great deal. I unsubscribed and won’t look back.

I really like MIGardener and his content but had to unsub. Their constant use of Clickbait titles on videos just gets to be too much. When you have to click on 12 videos with the title "You WONT BELIVE THIS" to find the info on the Corn you once saw it is very frustrating. Peace.
I get that. Unfortunately that's the CZcams "game" that's been created somewhat by other creators. Once one person starts using catchy titles, other creators follow suit because they see that those videos typically get more views.
