    I've purchased plants from both Wilson Brothers and Stark Brother's. Had success with both, so they are my go-to online nursery's. Also received great plants from New Life Nursery. All three pack their plants really well and everything I have ordered arrived in great condition. I also purchased some things from Annie's. I pretty much stick with companies that sent me great product. I do not even shop around for price now. As long as they send me quality plants I will pay what they ask. Sometimes you get what you pay for. You buy cheap and you get horrible plants. Stick to your growing zone and you usually do o.k. Most of my plants come back each year, and so I buy less each year and put more money into soil amendments and tools. Now I can afford to experiment with unusual or exotic plants. Food gardening is basic -- only plant what we will eat. But flower gardening let's you experiment -- which is fun. Food gardening in necessity; flower gardening is hobby fun. But all of it get's me outside, in the sun -- getting my vitamin D -- working the old muscles. Unless on a day like today -- raining. So, I am on the net watching gardening sites and occasionally making comments to pass the time. Great gardening to everyone and big thanks and appreciation to experienced gardeners like Gardener Scott for sharing their knowledge with hobby gardeners like me.

    I had the same experience with the burgess like companies. Some how I ended up flooded with these catalogs even though I'd never heard of them. I noticed their addresses are either the same or next door to each other etc. I've had a few plants l from these companies that survived, but I wasn't impressed. I started going through SSE almost exclusively for a while and started getting from some other companies as well a couple years ago bc of the selection. I like the phrase you used for the seed catalogs, it so true! I love looking through catalogs during winter. Now I shop several catalogs every year taking the best from each.
    On a side note, one of the last conversations I had with my dad before he passed away was about where I order my seeds and SSE's mission. He died unexpectedly so if it seems weird that we were talking about seeds, thats why.

    Just because a few companies have the same address does not necessarily mean the product is the same or from the same stock. It could also mean that they have all out-sourced to a mail processing company that takes printed forms and digitizes them or employs data entry clerks.

    I like Johnny's, but their shipping charges are excessive. Last I checked shipping started at around $8 and then the next tier is $15 and keeps jumping up from there. I don't buy from them anymore because of that. I know how much USPS first class shipping costs for small packages as I do a lot of shipping myself and I know they aren;t even paying more than $1 for an envelope because they use so many. Labor is expensive but it's still excessive. Basically their shipping charge is about what FedEx would charge.

    I like to order some different ride a tomato plant out of totally tomato and some out of the ordinary cucumber seed Maybe you know some things I just don't need a whole lot of. But for my beans my corn, okra, peas, and turnip greens I get it my local farmers co-op or we have a 3 other local AG Dealers. Like the rattlesnake beans I believe you said were $2 for a couple ounces I pay like $3 a pound. Wait cons about 13 to $15 a pound of pending on which kinds you get and good old Maltby field corn is only about $3.50 a pound. You can also buy Flats of tomatoes for $12 a flat that has 36 plants in them ready to set out but they don't always have the world's best selection. It'll be mostly Rutgers, Better Boy, celebrity, Roma, you get the idea just your run-of-the-mill kind of everyday tomatoes. But I like to get certain types of beefsteak tomatoes and I loved one that totally Tomatoes had called a big bite. I got them one year and they produced and made the best tomatoes and then the next year when I went to order them they said they had a total crop failure. I found a couple other packs online and ordered those and they didn't come up I think they were must have been from last year's crop and they charged me three times the cost of them also. Oh and I made a mistake I bought them 2 years in a row. but thanks for the info do you have a video on about using different things in your Tomatoes like Epsom salt and such other items that you might put on different plants to help them besides just fertilizer? just an idea I've heard Epsom salt would help but I used it one time on something but I don't remember what it was it's been 20 or 30 years ago I guess. I like to save seeds, so I'm willing to pay a little more for special plants or seeds and then save my own so I never have to buy again. I plan to do many more videos about growing tomatoes, to include Epsom salt and other additives. Some work and some don't. Thanks for your interest, Jack.

    I have to grow everything in big pots, I find for just basic seeds the Dollar Store seed packets do just fine, @.25 per packet , but for the fancier stuff I order from www.rareseeds.com/, I just put my order in and spent $35 for a dozen packets of things that I really want to grow--my goal is to grow crops that I can freeze or dry and eat all year long. So I went through the catalog and picked out seeds and then went through it again and removed seeds that may sound exotic and interesting but I really have no place for in my limited garden. Baker Creek does ship for free and I am getting a couple of their free mystery seeds too (which I used last year, it was a pepper variety and a packet of carrots.)

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  Před 5 lety

      Basic seeds are pretty much the same, regardless of the source, so shopping at the dollar store is a great idea. The video I'm releasing on Friday says to do exactly what you say... think about what will fit in your garden and remove the seeds that you really can't use. I'm not familiar with Bear Creek, but free shipping is always a good idea too. If you mean Baker Creek, they are one of my favorite companies to order from and their free shipping makes it even better. Thanks for the comment.
