    Dear Brits, Thanks for clarifying the many definitions of pudding.

    • @specificallyopened
      @specificallyopened Před 9 lety +78

      emmymadeinjapan This "ORP", (or as the squaddies call them, rat packs) is one of the worse varieties. (See below) Oatmeal blocks, aka biscuit A, are designed to make you constipated for when you're on sentry duty or a sniper for example. Dark choc chip biscuit , aka biscuit B, really "Unplugs" you, if you catch my meaning. If you're using the newest version (unsure if available for civi purchase) get menu 2. All day breakfast, yellow curry, blueberry turnover... Yummy...
      The "Target" is a range card, used by sentries for indicating how far away the enemy is if they come under fire. (The circle would be filled in with landmarks and ranges, so if the barn was 300m and I saw the enemy there, I'd then know they are 300m away and can adjust my aim accordingly)
      If you need anything clarifying, let me know ;)
      Cheers
      Sam

    Hey. Im an army cadet in the uk and we get rat packs all the time and there soooo nice. We swap with each other and we also mix food. For example if someone has a soup and you have rice we combine the two to make like a curry and we share it. The ration packs have changed alot since you posted this so some of these item are irrelevant. We call the powder drinks crack in a pack or screech. They are full of energy, you can add hot or cold water and you add i packet to 500ml of water. The meals aren't that bad cold I've had few cold meals. The are 20 different boxes you can get including vegetarian and holla(i think its called). We now get given a spork but we take a kfs which is knife fork and spoon with us. There are two different tabasco bottles you can get. The fruit pockets are like a smoothie or yogurt. We call it baby food. We cook all the food in a mess-tin on a tiny cocker where we boil them till the fuel runs out the we know its done. I love ration packs and often bring home what i dont eat or drink. We dont get most of the items in this pack we get similar things in different packaging. If you have any questions on the ration packs i would be more than happy to answer them for you.

      @chloewoodlock8487 Před 7 lety +5

      Georgia Wingett you can get some unpleasant meals but saying that i prefer eating ration packs than scoff food. But thats just my preference. You will soon realise to say yes to food and eat it as you will be hungry and tired and cold. The packs are full of energy they have 6000 calories in just two meals. And after all that nothing is better than a brew at the end of the day. Ration packs have changed soo much since this video. In my opinion for the better.

    Colloquially pudding can refer to any dessert in the UK. As in, the actual dessert course that you have after your main course. Example of conversation: "What are we having for pudding tonight?" "Cheesecake". So a meal goes as follows: starter, main course, pudding.

    British Army Ration packs or RAT packs as they are known here were heavily influenced by US C Rations in their form and design. They are highly popular within the British armed forces and are arguably superior to many other nations rations. They were also a very useful trade item for British troops when operating with other armies. US army troops when using the first generation MRE in the first Gulf War were eager to trade items with British troops for 24 hr Rat packs.
    The pack contents have changed to adapt to more modern dietary requirements and there also ones adapted for various religious needs. They have also been adapted to more recent combat operations in Afghanistan with the chocolate bars removed due to them melting. Tabasco sauce is include now based upon British troops experience trading them with US troops during the first Gulf War. US MRE came with a Tabasco sauce bottle and British troops liked them so much when they traded RAT packs that UK packs now include them. British troops will happily pour Tabasco sauce on any meal!
    The Oatmeal block is usually mashed up into a form of porridge by British troops. Finally all British armored vehicles are fitted with a device called a BV which stands for Boiling vessel. It allows them to make hot drinks and food in the vehicle. They just drop the boil in the bag food into the BV. American tanks don't have them.

      @@Elleoaqua Any sugar substitute, in sufficient quantities, can cause the runs. The reason is because the substitute is sweet like sugar, but your body doesn't have the enzymes to fully digest it. So, if you eat enough of it, your body tries to eliminate it by flushing more water into the large intestine. Haribo ran into this problem when they introduced sugar-free gummy bears. First of all, they used a sugar substitute called malitol. Second of all, they were expecting people to eat the recommended serving of 2 or 3 gummies... they weren't expecting people to eat the whole bag! The end result was a lot of people suffering from a 'gummy bear colon cleanse', and Haribo had to recall the product.

    Another great vid, Emmy. Castus is a berry that, when dried, is a lot like a peppercorn, and comes from the aptly named "chaste tree." It is traditionally used in herbal preparations for women's health, and gets its name from the fact that it was used to calm the sensual passions. I guess that it helps soldiers in the same way...?? ;-)

    Hello
    When I was in the Army the 1 man 24 hour Ration Pack had a Hexamine stove in it. The Castus bar is a Health Bar (Fruit & Nuts with something Sugary to hold it together). In the old days we had Condensed Milk in a tube, These days they have Beverage Whitener? I think it has something to do with it not being just dried milk (Light Cream maybe). The Exotic drink will be a mixture of exotic fruit flavors. It also said "Isotonic" Which means it is 90 % water, 10% Fruit juice and a pinch of Salt, Which is absorbed quicker by the body than plain water. The Oatmeal Block we used to crush in a bowl, Add hot water and add Condensed milk to make porridge for breakfast. I would imagine the Chocolate Pudding is a Steamed Chocolate Sponge Pudding with a chocolate sauce. We also say pudding in stead of dessert. The "Spotted Dick" was a plain Steamed Sponge Pudding with Currents and diced Peel in it. We only had one "Bar" but did have Hard Tack biscuits, Small Tin of Processed Cheese and a couple Tubes of Jam. Keep up the good work
    Andy C

    Koopa Troopa! You're welcome Emmy: great video and so glad you enjoyed it. I have no idea what "castus bar" means either! I'm sure exotic dancers in a ration pack would cheer the troops up no end, but in the UK, it generally means a mix of more unusual fruit flavours, like mango, passion fruit, kiwi etc... ;-) p.s. I drink my tea exactly the same way you do, with no milk or sugar.

    The glass bottle of Tabasco are literal satan. When you're sleeping people will pour them in your mouth~ Sometimes with rat packs you'll get a green package which can usually be eaten cold as a lunch option.There's one that's just a package of tuna with lemon and pepper flavoring you just eat - it's pretty good after walking for ages carrying a burgan. You honestly need all those calories. Even then I was still hungry (I eat a lot for female my size). Biscuit browns and fruit biscuits have an "Alice in wonderland effect" on toileting.You save those for when you need them. The fruit pockets are pretty good too - especially the yellow one ^^ The powdered drinks people tend to mix together in a large pot into "jungle juice" and see who can drink the whole thing. The rat packs are issued with different numbers and you never really know what you'll get as each is different, but you can usually swap what you dislike with someone else. They also interestingly have a shelf life of around 3 years.

      @simonj48 Před 9 lety +19

      The ORP are certainly better than what I had just 10 years back. The people who're eating this stuff on the field will probably not be eating it as Emmy eats it. Most certainly they won't be eating it as each packet on their own. We'd save parts of a particular day's meal box (that's what the 7 on the box is btw), and then we'd use 2 or 3 meals as one... mainly because would get the same-same week in week out, and it made for a new taste, but mostly because some of the meals you just didn't enjoy so you'd mask the flavours. It looks like they've gone for brand names now too though, my last pack was just foiled and white packs.
      You might find that the chicken pasta is put into the mess tin (the metal pan they carry with them) along with say the chilli con corne and cook it together. sounds vile but if you don't like either or just want something that tastes different it's actually really nice lol... and with the added bonus one day you can double up on some of the nicer stuff like puddings.
      The ability to cook it like that, I think makes the UK's ration packs a bit better then the USA version.
      Still, when you're out in the field and you're wet and cold, anything hot is a blessing

      08LFA MRE food is more portable, but the heaters are impractical. In the british 12 hour ration packs we get the self heaters, and trust me- a 4 hour march in the rain and it'll of activated for sure. Hexamine is waterproof, the stove can be reused and all of the fuel can be burned. (Even the paper it comes in is waxed for tinder)

    we use to joke that the "biscuit brown" (now called oatmeal) was used on Centurion tanks as extra armour. the tissues are for wiping your bum, but none ever used them as the ration food blocked you up. we use to get a Yorkie chocolate bar in the packs with "not for civvys" written on them too. another thing I noticed they no longer have is the bag of boiled sweets.

    The chocolate puddings where the best bit about Rat Packs ! I was a cadet for 3 years and all the girls would want the mini bottles of Tabasco as they're so cute !!! The matches are indeed like that so they're weather proof and the international element to the foods is to keep the quality high and the price low. And a hex block heater is a little 8cm by about 4cm box that can be carried around and is able to be opened and you put some fire lighter blocks in it and a metal tin of water per block. Another fun memory from cadets was being dared to eat a drink packet with out gagging, think cinnamon challenge but a lot more energy ! Haha

    The biscuits are deliberately designed to be very dry and high fibre....lets just say it keeps you regular and solid in the field. The Cocoa / Hot Chocolate was always a bit of a laxative. I used to eat my RAT PACKS out of sequence, so I would have the Dessert for Breakfast for a massive morning sugar hit, usually RICE PUDDING because it can be eaten cold. I would then have the biscuits and dry stuff during the day etc during the day - Evening, double up on the mains / hot chocolate..I used to come back with tons of stuff because you never had time to eat more than 2/3rds of it.

    1. A generic term for the dessert course of a meal ("what's for pudding mum?")
    2. A type of milky dessert like Emmy described, made with tapioca or rice
    3. A steamed sponge, sometimes with currants in it, served with sweet sauce and/or custard
