  • With recent history and the buildup, this game ended up being one of the most important and iconic win in program history. And it all happened under the lights in Beaver Stadium when the Whiteout was still in it's infancy. In fact, this is the game that made the Whiteouts famous, with Kirk Herbstreit calling the student section "the best in the country". And that student section helped the Lions, as both defenses dominated in this game, and played outstanding. Each team could only muster just over 200 yards of total offense for the game. Ohio State came in with a #6 national ranking, while Penn State had been climbing the rankings with each victory since the season began. Michael Robinson and the offense got Penn State on the board with a superb drive in the second quarter which ended with a Derrick Williams toss sweep for six. Then Troy Smith threw a pick to Calvin Lowry on the ensuing possession to set up another score run in by Robinson. That quick wave of momentum in the 2nd quarter was enough for Penn State to hold onto for the rest of the night. The key to the game was turnovers and sacks. While each team struggled to move the ball against superior defenses, it was Penn State who didn't give up a sack all night. And after early season troubles with glaring turnovers in each game, the offense didn't turn the ball over at all against the Buckeyes, while the two turnovers committed by Troy Smith, were the daggers that doomed the visitors. This one was one for the ages, and it catapulted the Nittany Lions to complete the legendary 2005 season as it was.
    Penn State's Top Performers:
Paul Posluszny: 14 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 TFLs
Tamba Hali: 7 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 TFLs
Dan Connor: 12 tackles, 1 sack
Penn State vaulted from a 16th national ranking to 8th after the win over Ohio State, and improving its record to 6-0. Ohio State suffered its second loss of the year at Penn State bringing its record to 3-2. The Buckeyes would then win out and finish at 10-2 with an AP Poll final ranking of 4th, nationally. They earned a Fiesta Bowl win over Notre Dame to cap off an impressive season.

I’m 34. For me, and I’ve been to at least one home game every year of my life, the 2005 lead up to game day, the palpable buzz in the valley like a storm coming, the hype, college game day, the legend of Joseph Vincent Paterno, Paul poz and Company…
I was a junior in high school, I worked the Friday night beforehand at the hospital, I went home and slept till 10 am when we left for the stadium, which is only an hour ride from my home. It wasn’t cold, but it wasn’t warm. It was your typical wet fall afternoon in Pennsylvania. We enjoyed our tailgate: filet mignon, lobster, smoked Brie, wine, booze…good company. My friend and I went to the stadium to mingle with the students at paternoville, as some of our former schoolmates were now freshman, and taking part in what we now recognize as a historic game in PSU history. On a side note, I’ve yet to see that many empty beer cans at any PSU game yet, they had mountains of empties everywhere.
Anyway, the game was nothing short of expectations, and the only word I’ve ever came up with that describes the complete atmosphere, is biblical. Nothing, no game that’s happened at those hallowed grounds has matched that intensity yet, I have my hopes though. The stadium sways, but not like it did that night. Not a fan had a wet ass, not one of us sat down all night, halftime included. When the lions weren’t on offense, it was deafening. Not just when the defense was on the field, I’m talking the minute the offense was off the field, until they were back on, the screaming didn’t stop. I sat in section EH, row c seat 18. From there, which is on the east side of the stadium on roughly the 35, roughly 35 rows from the field, you could feel and see the stadium moving.
Stormed the field after the game. Grabbed a chunk of the field, still have it all these years later.

The cut to the student section after the Hali sack is amazing. Penn St at its finest. That student section had heart.

A masterclass defensive performance by Penn State. They took all our receivers out of the game and made Troy Smith have to either run or throw intermediate passes, where he struggled all day.
