Penn State vs. Ohio State 1997 GAME STORY

  • In one of the most picturesque games ever played in Beaver Stadium, the stakes couldn't have been higher. Ohio State came in with and undefeated record and a top 10 ranking. The same as the Nittany Lions. At the time, it was the largest home crowd ever in Beaver Stadium. What ensued was a battle that entertained the crowd throughout the 60 minutes of game time played. The Buckeyes couldn't seem to stop the run, while Penn State couldn't seem to stop the pass. Curtis Enis and Aaron Harris put on a clinic on how to run the ball, and on the other side, Joe Germaine put on a passing clinic throwing to David Boston and Dee Miller. At times it seems as if Germaine was the most accurate passer in college history in this game. There were big plays on both sides of the ball for both teams, and the momentum see-sawed throughout to end up in favor of the home team when all was said and done. Despite the way 1997 ended for Penn State, this was an all-time classic, and still is, that sometimes gets overlooked in Penn State annals.
    Penn State's Top Performers:
Curtis Enis: 23 carries, 211 yards, TD
    Aaron Harris: 7 carries, 86 yards, 2 TDs .. 2 receptions, 19 yards
Brandon Short: 1 sack, 1 interception
Penn State remained undefeated with the huge victory, and pursued it's national championship aspirations for the time being. Ohio State suffered it's first loss of the season, and finished the year with a 10-3 record and a number 12 final raking in the AP Poll. They would lose to Florida State in the Sugar Bowl at season's end.

This was my very first penn state and collegiate game. Little did I know that 7 years later I'd be a freshman at psu.

Jurevicius had a rough day. Two muggings that were not called and a great catch that was called incomplete.

My favorite. I had been at the 95 game and it was the only loss i'd witnessed after 9 straight wins, This fixed that, and the way it happened was better yet. Losing Harris was bigger than people realized.

Right...I remember the 87 fiesta bowl when he called Schaeffer average at best. Dude went 66-1 as a starter and a natty champ!
