God of War Ragnarök is an action-adventure video game developed by Santa Monica Studio and the sequel to 2018's God of War. Based on Norse mythology, the game will be set in ancient Scandinavia and feature series protagonist Kratos and his teenage son Atreus. - Hry

The voice actor for Kratos is so good at keeping stoic while still showing a range of emotions in his voice. Like when he told Atreus he could have killed him after he fought him as a bear, you could hear the worry in his voice but he still didn't sound any less Kratos-y.

1:32:54 just realised that the two ravens sitting on the chest Atreus tries to punch are Huginn and Muninn 👀 God, it really just helps nail home just how cunning Odin actually is and how he knows how to ingratiate himself to Atreus when he takes him up on his offer to go to Asgard.
The fact that Kratos talks to Atreus instead of just giving him orders like in the last game really shows how they have both grown.
Yeah, the sheer attention to detail and meticulous writing that was put into the character development is astonishing.
A large difference in this story is that this is Atreus' quest. Atreus is largely making the (questionable) decisions, and Kratos is following as mentor, forcing Atreus to think through his actions and consider the consequences.
the absolute only bad thing about this series is having to wait 24 hours for the next episode

The relationship dynamics between characters can really make or break a story and God of War really hones in on this aspect that just really sets the game to be amazing.

Also Jack when Atreus swears like a sailor: "wait did he swear?"
Norse mythology (/language) trivia:
5:58 "Skjálfa" means "to shiver, tremble" in Icelandic.
9:27 Heimdall was the guardian god of the Aesir, who keeps watch over the rainbow bridge that leads to Asgard (bifrost). Gjallarhorn (meaning "hollering horn") was the horn Heimdall would use to warn the gods about the approach of the giants (the gods' enemies) during Ragnarok. Heimdall and Loki are fated to kill each other during the battle.
10:20 Lyngbakr ("heather back" in Icelandic) is a massive whale that baits sailors by posing as a heather-covered island, sinking into the sea when a crew landed on its back (thus drowning them).
13:36 Lyr is Menglöð's/Menglad's (often identified with Freyja) hall in Jotunheim (the land of giants).
13:59 "Dreki" is Icelandic for "dragon".
16:33 "Rönd" is Icelandic for "stripe, streak" or "edge, rim"
23:33 Trolls were giant, monstrous beings (sometimes possessing magic powers) who lived in isolated rocks, mountains, or caves. Hostile to men, trolls lived in castles and haunted the surrounding districts after dark. If exposed to sunlight they burst or turned to stone.
27:30 "Järnsmida" means "iron forge" in Swedish.
37:46 Kvasir was a poet and the wisest man, born from the saliva of the Aesir and Vanir gods, after performing a peace ritual on spitting into a common vessel. He traveled around to spread knowledge, until he has killed by the dwarfs Fjalar and Galar, who mixed his blood with honey to create the Mead of Poetry (which gave wisdom and poetic inspiration to those who drank it). And yeah, when Loki was hiding from the gods after killing Baldr, Kvasir noticed the outline of a crude net in the ashes of the of the hearth in Loki's house (which Loki crafted tried to think what the gods could use to catch him in fish form), and deduced it was made to catch fish (he shared that with the gods, and that's what allowed them to find and catch Loki in a stream near the house, shapeshifted into a salmon).
53:49 "Meign" probably comes from "sameign", which means "conflict, fight" in Old Icelandic.
57:13 Durin/Durinn is a dwarf who forged the magic sword Tyrfing.
57:18 World Mill is an interpretation of the cosmos as a rotating millstone, which could churn out well-being or disaster. It is associated with Mundilfari ("the one who turns the handle of the mill"), the father the sun and the moon (with his name related to the fixed nature of temporal cycles). It's also associated with Bergelmir, one of the few giants who escaped the deluge of blood from Ymir (which flesh and blood were used by Odin to create the earth and the sea) using a luthr (a box-mill).
58:30 Draugr are animated corpses (undead creatures) that inhabit their grave, often guarding buried treasure.
1:06:06 "Hvat er at gerast?" means "What is happening?" in Icelandic.
1:11:52 "Hættu" means "stop" in Icelandic.
1:16:23 Alfheim was the world of the elves.
1:18:07 "Sverð" is Old Norse for "sword".
1:23:19 Nidavellir is just another name for Svartalfheim (the world of dwarves - the game considers Nidavellir to be a city in Svartalfheim, though).
1:30:18 Jormungandr (aka "the world serpent", since it was so big it could encircle the world) was a child of Loki and the giantess Angrboda. Jormungandr and Thor are fated to kill each other during Ragnarok.
1:34:51 Tyr's arm got bitten off by Fenrir once the wolf realized the gods (including Tyr) tricked him into being bound with the chain Gleipnir. At Ragnarok Fenrir finally breaks free, ultimately defeating Odin but also being defeated by Vidar (one of Odin's sons).
1:36:06 "Örva ýta" literally means "Incite push" in Icelandic (since the arrow pushes enemies away).
1:40:13 "Iron wood" (Járnviðr) is a forest inhabited by giantesses/trollwomen (járnviðjur) who bore jötnar (giants) and giant wolves.
1:44:36 Bestla is the mother of the gods Odin, Vili and Vé. She is also Mimir's sister.
1:47:26 Surtr is the fire giant who ruled Muspelheim (the primordial world of fire) and had a great burning sword. During Ragnarok, he leads the fire giants against the Aesir gods. Surtr and the god Freyr are fated to kill each other during the battle.
thanks for this! it’s interesting.
You deserve more recognition for this🙌🏽
Correction on that last point. Freyr could not kill Surtr because he lost his magic sword in a previous story. Thus he died, and Surtr was able to burn away the old world.

When Jack said “I want to see Kratos smile once” I remembered at the beginning of the game (when they got back from hunting and being chased by Freya) that Kratos had smiled when Atreus had gotten the deer before Kratos could even offer to get it. It was a small smile, but it was a proud one.
Something to note about what was mentioned about Atreus; he is VERY suppressed when he's with his dad. This makes a lot of sense because his dad not only shreds through fights due to his might, but because his personality causes his kid to hesitate. Without the big daddy around, Atreus is probably about as strong as a spartan soldier due to his magic, which honestly is probably the minimum requirement to act as support for the god-killer.
I mean he has fought so many light elves alone and when he was younger in how 2018

Does anyone else love Atreus’s fighting style? Soo swift and sharp
Exactly, Kratos is far heavier in his attacks and damage but Atreus is swift and agile.
Like how Loki is
I definitely think they should do a disconnected spinoff like Fromsoft did with Sekiro, focusing on a much more nimble Jedi: Fallen order type game. They've got all the ingredients for it, and they'd do it well, no doubt. While watching Atreus, it reminded me of how it felt when I finally mastered the game, with those swift little barely-missing dodges and counterattacks. I think the industry is ready for a shakeup like it honestly, EA's single good game and Fromsoft need some competitors to enact a change or sharpen their skills against.
Love it too
@@ericmonaco4509 doesn’t Loki use more magic in the mythology?
Until now I didn't realize how big the gap between atreus and kratos is. Like kratos is so undeniably strong
No matter how mature and old Jack has gotten in these years he still is the same good old jack screaming like a BOY
As a South African, my heart swelled when he complimented the accent like that
Same
The South African accent is absolutely beautiful, one of my favourites.
Same! I wish I hadn't lost my accent. 😥
I agree but it wasn't a South African accent
@@loosecannon8436 It actually kind of was! The actor Usman Ally was born in Eswatini and wanted to make the role his own and thought Durlin looked Afrikaans so he went with a sort of Afrikaans accent. He talked about the accent choice on his Twitter! 😁I think he did he really good job!
For the people wondering, the poem Large Society Ground Orb was referring to the game MLB the show 😂. It's describing a baseball game.
I thought it was assassins creed lmao
really 😂
MLB
M, l, B….
Minor, league, baseba- oh god damnit.
@@Ofxzh Major but yes. It took me a long time too, mostly because I don’t play sports games so I completely forgot The Show was a thing.
I thought it was NBA but the player count was somehow off
Atreus: *curses*
Kratos: LANGUAGE!
1:13:55 I love how kratos was able to snap him back into reality because he too is a god of war.
Atreus: Fuck off dad! You said I was in charge!
Also Atreus: I feel like you’re mad at me???
Atreus: gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss
Atreus, Atreus. At times, he’s like the kid at school that bullies other kids and complains no one likes him. Especially in his “little sh*t” (tm) phase in GOW 2018.
Can't get over that jack called Atreus 'Ellie' literally such a funny slip-up/joke
I legit was watching this on my tv and came to this on my phone specially looking to see if anyone else caught that 🤣
so glad it wasnt just me how acknowledged that
timestamp?
@@expectedeyeball8049 30:52
I would say he did it on purpose 🤣I got a good laugh out if it
23:50 Jesus! Dear fella just wanted to ask the time!

Random, but as a South African I am very awestruck that Sean loves the way that we "pronounce words"..
Side note: The character's accent is more kiwi than South African, but it's anyways not really related to what Sean said.
At first I thought it was a Maori accent but now since I’m hearing it again I believe Jack was right.
I love how kratos and atreus have grown- i love their convos "one day i might even be stronger than you!''
"if your not, i have failed"
and then the cute convo on atreus growing a beard
The beard conversation is easily the best. Kratos cracking an actual joke with his son is a moment we need more of. He doesn’t need to be a jokey character all the time but he also doesn’t need to be grim with the son he very clearly loves 24/7
@@tanuki01 Wait where did he joke
@@GameOver-nm2us the "is it?" part, he said it twice in like "ohhh reallyyyyy" kind of way
@@anaxis.4991 ahh that was joking?
@@GameOver-nm2us they were both jokingly teasing him when he said it cause they both have amazing, and with him saying that and not actually seeing scruf is funny
As a proud South African , I would like to say that Seãn interpretation is spot on 😁👍
It’s such a cool accent! So nuanced and hard to replicate.
@@jacksepticeye really is
If u were to come to South Africa you'll fit right in
I got all giddy when he at least thought about South African accent! I’m South African too!
Every one of us South African subscribers are smiling 😂😂😂but also we got many different accents... Would be amazing to see your reaction to them all😂
49:45 I wonder if we'll hear more about Týr's adventures into other lands.
I know there was a mural of his adventures in the previous game that had Greek, Egyptian, Japanese and Celtic symbols on it.
23:55 "I am serious and don't call me surely"
I see what you did there, very nice "Airplane" reference, took me way back
i knew i wouLd find a comment about it :)
I highly enjoyed how Jack was able to identify the video game references with the poems but the one that’s about baseball is foreign to him haha
Was looking for this comment, because that’s the only one I for the life of me couldn’t figure out. Now it seems so obvious though, lol
I was the other way around entirely XD I picked out that the baseball poem sounded like a flowery description of baseball when Jack first read it, but I didn't put together that the rest of the poems were references until Jack said they were out loud lmao
interesting enough the one he thought was Zelda is actually Horizon Zero Dawn.Blood hair gives it away as Alloy
They're not referencing anything
@@Wheelz627 wdym they’re not referencing anything, they are lmfao💀
I love it how kratos scolds atreus for cursing like a normal everyday parent
No he scolded him for losing control and panicking he specifically said the word didn’t matter.
@@tyty-xm8fw He doesn't really care what he said, but getting to the point where he feels the need to swear is the issue.
It's basically the same thing but for different reasons.
@@Kjf365 no? Even if Atreus didn't swear he would still be scolded.
@@Kjf365 I don’t find it any different than going “ah!” when something scares you.
It’s just an instinctual reaction.
@@joegaddy2030 Atreus doesn't swear, except apparently when he's panicking. So therefore Kratos is effectively scolding him for swearing, even if he doesn't care about the specific wording he used.
You wanna see him smile? He smiles after Atreus puts the deer on the tree for the wolves in the first episode
22:47 "WHERE'S YOUR TICKET" shit made me giggle, imagine Kratos saying that.
Anyways this shit made me remind of COD:BO 2 when your rebuilding the protection to your bus' windows and the zombies keep coming in.
Atreus punching the chest and grimacing in pain had me screeching with laughter
That word……
Screeching 😫
