All around the world, securities settlement timetables are getting shorter and shorter. Several countries are pushing for T+1 (next day settlement) or even T+0 (same day settlement). India is already live with T+1 for its equity market, while the US and Canada have recently confirmed adoption of T+1 in 2024. Others could follow suit, with major markets like the UK exploring their own move to T+1 as well.
Shorter settlement cycles can bring about a number of benefits, but they can also lead to disruption and fragmentation. From an operational perspective, T+1 means that trade confirmations and matching must take place within a few hours of the trade’s execution - raising the possibility of a spike in settlement fails and increasingly, financial penalties. In this new paradigm, settlement efficiency is more important than ever.
This session was where Simon A.X. Daniel, Securities Product Manager at Swift, and Virginie O'Shea, CEO of Firebrand Research, discussed the impact of shorter #settlement cycles and what firms should think about to thrive in this new paradigm.
