A VERY POPULAR TRADITIONAL GHANAIAN STREET FOOD | WEST AFRICAN FOOD | KENKEY IN ACCRA - GHANA
Vložit
- čas přidán 1. 09. 2020
- Kenkey originates for the Ga tribe of Ghana - West Africa. The Ga Tribe form a big part of the greater Accra Region within Ghana. This Ghanaian delicacy is made from fermented corn dough/meal. The corn dough is then cooked with water to form a sticky dough just like Banku (A Ghanaian dish)
More fresh corn dough is then added to the 'banku' to make kenkey, before molding and cooking further. You can buy this Ghana dish from most street food vendors in ghana. Love sharing these videos as it introduces you to how Ghanaians live and work together, hence giving you bits of the Ghanaian culture. This kenkey place is located in Tema community 1 not far from the market. I hope you enjoy the video. xx

Please let’s keep the western critics in our head these foods are healthy and we’ve been eating these for years . Enjoy with an open mind and respect their hustle! Much love and blessings
Yes ooo masa
So true and the flip side is none of us have died. The west with their process compliance food kill more people.
They are super healthy and mouthwatering
I couldn't agree with you more. These women play a very important role in feeding the people who have no time to cook because of the hustle and bustle not only in Accra but in all the big metropolis in Ghana. Thanks to all the kenkey women who found time to feed me when I was in Ghana.
Not only that, these modern conveniences that we currently use have been around only relatively recently (approximately 100-200 years). Man has been in existence much longer and this is pretty much how everyone around the world prepared their food, out in the open over a fire, often using the ground or perhaps a huge rock for a table. So this is all good and nothing new.
If people are so concerned about hygiene, they should inspect the Chinese restaurants that some of our people love to patronize.
you are very correct
Even places like mcdonalds will shock you. These people do the best they can with what they have
So true, at least here nothing is hidden and everything is fresh.
Even the so called high end restaurants. You would be surprised what goes on behind closed doors
@Daughter of Yah hello, where are you from?
Most of the Ghanaian foods we buy on the street are very labour intensive, but it is sold for very small cost. It is the families they feed and help everyday that gives them joy and fulfilment to continue with their businesses. Once again thanks for giving this hardworking people an exposure.
Even though it is labour intensive, they make a lot of money from it. Small cost? I dont think so. Food is only cheap in the rural areas.
I’m American and I’ve never been to Ghana but I’ve always felt this connection...
I love and appreciate you’re content, please continue to create.
Me too. To see meals prepared with love and to see the unity is always touching. 😊
Awwwwwww today u taking me back to my roots🙌🏿🙌🏿I was a KENKEY SELLER!
Asaay you taya 😆😆 Aiya Maya
Wode Maya I sold provisions, and eggs 🥚 at young age. And I believe most people may have similar stories. The power of sharing our stories may change others lives.
SKT In Focus
Most of us helped our parents to sell their food products as young kids and even in earlier age.
Some of us have hassled in our own different ways.
I remember you saying this in one of your videos.
Btw, I'm the guy that just sent the $50 PayPal. I know it's not much but your videos have made me feel whole and filled with pride. Keep up the great work🙌🏽
This is great ! I want to send the lady/cook some money.
we have no apologies to make, we must sent our own standards, we eat this food and we never get sick, we grew up in Africa without sanitizers but we survived.
I completely agree.
👉🏾 I know that's right ! Strong immune systems.
This is a very intense, skilled, and hard work 😓. The Ga people call what she is doing “aflata”. After they mold it in the corn 🌽 husk and cook in bigger pots for hours allowing the steam to properly cook the kenkey. I am fortunate living here in Dallas,Texas , we have people who do it on large scale for sale and my mum prepares it at home fresh only for family consumption when we have need for it. Kudos to all the hard working women and men out there. Life they say is not easy. Life is tough everywhere. The determining factor is grit. Let’s see more stories.

msc14111990 you made my day by adding to my input. It’s almost similar in all parts of the world 🌍. Thanks 😊 🙏

Hard working lady, May God prosper her so that she can be a successful Ghanaian woman🙏❤️
I'm a Ga girl who lives in Canada. My mom makes Kenkey at home. Making the "aflata" (the cooked dough) is a lot of work. I sometimes help my mom with it. I don't even know how this woman is able to make such a huge batch of aflata. She really did a great job.
Wow, this is A LOT of work to get up and make everyday. These women do more in a morning than most people do all day. Jasmine thank you for showing us REAL life in Ghana.
I really admire these women, when I am stirring a small pot of banku I literally feel like I did 3 days worth of arm workouts lol.
Naomi Adjeiwaa haha that’s exactly how i feel xx
Same! 😂
But after watching Jasmine's channel for a while, I know I need to up my game. 😂
I tell you 😂
Hi ladies I'm Gambian but I've nothing but admiration 💪🏿 this s how it gets done. watching this makes me feel proud. My respect for the chefs n d you tuber welldone!!
Hcg
My respect for you grows with each video you upload. Unlike some other returnees who behave as though they hold the keys to all that is good (simply because they've lived abroad), you've completely re-immersed yourself in the culture and learning from it each passing day instead of ranting on youtube and asking for "... this must stop!" as some do. Mad respect!
Lovely comment and great observation. That's what I love about her. She has re-immersed into the culture. She is true at heart
This woman is strong oo. Just some small one bi that I tried to do on the stove it felt like my hand was about to break off 😂🙌🏽 more Vim
I hear many of my friends say they love Kenkey but I had no idea how labor intensive it is in the making, Wow ! I really enjoyed this video!
David Allen u need to try it David xx
@@JasmineAmaa I wish I were there to try the real thing from Maku. The friends I spoke of are Ghanaians there. But, I suppose I might find it in an African Food store locally. You were in Texas at one time. So, you may recall that Mexican Tamales are also made using a seasoned corn flour (Masa) dough spread onto a corn husk then with ground meat added which gets folded up inside the corn husk and steamed. The drawback $10 to $12 per dozen (ouch!) Everybody loves Tamales! ❤️
Yes, you are very right. My wive makes this in Uganda for sale and people ask why this price and that..... It's worth every bit of the price cos it's very hard work.
Miss Ama jasmine you're doing a great job to promote these hard working women!!
True most Ghanaian dishes are labor-intensive. These women give it their all. Thanks once again for showing us local hustle
I just admire how you highlight various aspects of our culture in such an informative, yet humble way. You’re doing great hun. God bless you ✨
All those onions and she wasn't crying? Man! I love to see how these women just work so hard. Sometimes I wish I grew like them and learned to do all of this laborious work. If you've acquired certain skills, you will never be short of anything. They say "if you can make it in NY, you can make it anywhere". BUT, These are the kinds of people that will MAKE IT ANYWHERE. God bless you for these videos Jas 💖. These are my new favorites next to the what I spent in a Ghana market video lol.
Shawny Chantell haha I know righttt... she didn’t even blink the whole timee its crazyy
I grew up in a village in Ghana. I stayed with my grandparents. I hated going to the farm on Saturdays when there was no school or when school was closed at the end of semester. Hated carrying foodstuffs from the farm to the house. An in and out journey of around 15 to 20 miles
❤️❤️
@@faithuwubutatu2912 exactly sis ❤ you have grit because of her. You understood perfectly 🙏🏽🙏🏽
I really like what you said in the beginning of the video.. some people act as if they’ve never ate from vendors like those before
Hard labour ; strong women; that's the reason that's we are resilient .A big RESPECT TO ALL those women's who early in the morning provide us foods
I love you ALL.
Jasmine have done it again lovely
✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽
Omg, Kadija is honestly so beautiful😍
P.s. I’d love to see how Fanti Kenkey is made.
2006, I had Kenkey for the first time in Washington DC from a Ghanaian family, at first bite I did not like the sour/ bitter taste, but a funny thing happened after the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th bite, I could not stop eating it, a matter of fact, I eat a whole one by myself, the family was in shocked, and laugh at me, but I did not care, my belly was full. I love that family to bits, they were the ones that gave me my Day name. great vlog, keep up the good work...Excellent!!
Hahahaha
You forgot to add that you slept for hours coz the kenkey is gonna hit u hard
I'm from Guyana, where many of our ancestors trace their roots to Ghana. I'm sure you know the history. I remember eating a version of kenke as a child. It was sweet, made with cornmeal and coconut milk. Raisins were added as well. We would buy from kenke sellers as a smack after school. Its wonderful to see this. Can someone tell me if there's a sweet version in Ghana?
O! Africa! My Africa!!
AFRICAN MAN WHERE ARE YOU ??
AT LEAST YOU COULD BUILD A MACHINE TO DO THIS !
AFRICAN WOMAN THE REAL KEEPER !
For sure machines would make their work way easier..as for the African men, well, most have decided that gender role changes suits their lazy lifestyles more than helping and being a partner to the women in their lives.
@@nikkilove6035 Ikr 😂hmm💔
There were komi factories, my grandma (born 1929) used to work in one. The ladies just moulded the komi into the corn husks, everything else was done by machine. This was during Nkrumah's presidency...
My sister doing the most most best😍😍❤️
Judith Serwaa ❤️
The more I watch these videos, the more I wonder if it's not Jamaica. The cooking pot I'm also familiar with: we also use it for outdoor cooking and, coat it before with Ashes so, at the end we'll have a faster cleanup. The Baskets used in Ghana are also used in Jamaica. We call it "Bankra".
Bankra sounds like a Ghanaian word too.
@@africa2890
I am not surprise.
Bankra is Ankra in Ghanaian fante language. The English name for Ankra is Barrel
@@cfcbreakdownchannel3873
Oh I see. Interesting.
@@cfcbreakdownchannel3873 very true, ankora
This was mind blowing. You are extremely intelligent and you are the BEST Female Ghanaian Utuber
Doreen Onekalit thanks so much ❤️
They’re all good. Vanessa Kanbi is also really good
@@analyticshub9615 Dennis they are all good but in my opinion she is the BEST in Ghana. And I have all my reasons.
Jasmine Ama think you for this video 👍👏🏿
@@ibrahimmusah3054 I have been on these Utube Streets. And I drop serious detailed comments. For me right now, Jasmine has strongly broke from the park. The details of her footage, the storyline, the content, the information, the education, her originality, her authenticity, her relatability, her engagement with her material and her viewers is at another level.
Kambi is good.I like her new segment. She was great but her previous content was not exceptional everyone was doing the same thing.
I can't wait to experience the competitiveness of quality contents.
I am extremely proud of all Our African Utubers. There is enough room in the Tent. Just be yourself.
Isnt it amazing how we eat these foods regularly but don't have no idea how its done?
Nana Ashanti I know right haha
And what is dirty there nothing the whole place is clean just lucks organising that's all the good thing is we eat it and grow even stronger than those that pretend to be high standards
This is the main diet of the Ga people who live in and around Accra. This food is very healthy. There is a mystery to this food. The Accra people who eat this food are very strong. Many Ga people became World Boxing Champions and they are still many great boxers from these Accra people waiting to become World Champions. A few of these World renowned Boxing champions from Accra are D.K. Poison, Prof. Azuma Nelson, Ike Bazooka Quartey, Alfred Kotey , Joshua Clottey and a host of others who are on the threshold of emerging as World Champions. All these are boxers from the Ga tribe in Accra and have made their mark on the World stage in Boxing. I am of the firm conviction that there is something very good in this food: The Great Accra Kenkey.
Frank Bekoe haha viably theory xx
Let's figure out a way to get her recipes over here in the US, so we can start building our relationship!. She made GHANA the place to be!
Watching all the way from Jamaica 🇯🇲
Kenkey is one of my favourite oo 😊 , in fact, I'm going to eat kenkey right now. oh my days
Lol
Beautiful gift they are preserving. Believe me that US 5 star restaurants fail health test all the time. I’d love to taste and enjoy time with these gifted women
Who is talking about hygiene? People who don't shower everyday or who don't clean their bums properly as is common in the west I am sure. DON'T THROW STONES FROM A GLASS HOUSE.
Hahaha Thank you ohhh
The way that I love Kenkey eh! I will definitely appreciate the process from now on, I never realised the muscle work 💪🏾💪🏾
I became sad when I heard you asking her how much she took everyday as payment.
Her daily struggle and her daily payment don't tally at all.
E need to see some changes in this wages and salary issue
Our women are strong 💪🏾
The way she was cutting those onion...sooo satisfying to watch but so scary
I've never seen that method of cutting. It's cool
#🇯🇲🇯🇲
Thank you Jasmine once again for another great production! ❤️
New subscriber here! 😊
Your content is amazing and most importantly, it's humane. ❤️ You're putting people at the centre and in the final analysis, that's what counts. It's ultimately not about the number of subscribers, but how many people are helped in this journey of life. Much blessings and love to you! 🤗❤️

I always say Ghanaian women are some of the strongest people EVER and if the word "hustler" was a person, I'd be a Ghanaian woman. I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Jasmine for the videos you have become my favorite blogger😊
I love the way you teach us about the hard work the people do to feed their families. You are truly about the people and a Blessing from Jehovah. Thank you Jasmine
I'm so hungry for the plate of food at the end
They are cleaner than any restaurant or fast food, i promise!

You are doing a lot for ghana men. Very proud of u. It's not comparing two different cultures, just saying this is mine and it makes me happy.
Dear Jasmine, thank you for your video, because you make me travel and know Ghana. The food from your country must be delicious. I send you a hug from Mexico, I hope that one day you will visit us. God bless you.😘

Your vids are very much relaxing as well as informative and inspirational. Thank you 🙏🏽
Jasmine, you know why I love you? Despite your background (living abroad) you are so down to earth. I will always watch your videos whenever it's possible.
When I see the videos of people eating food with their fingers it reminds me of how my great grandmother taught me to eat my greens and corn bread with my fingers when I was a child. I haven't done this since my childhood but every time I see it I just smile.❤
The fingers add some mysterious taste to the food

I got love for my people, they just exude greatness no matter what life throws at them. I can’t wait to try kenkey now, thanks sis. And thanks to the lady for all she do for her family and the people abroad ❤️
So true !
have you ever wonder why in Africa we eat a lot of Carbs but we don't put on weight is coz our cooking is labour intensive so when you eat that food and walking on the sun or doing the dishes and tidying up you already burn yr calories boz the food is not process its complex carbs....but now we are eating pizzas and fast foods......since i change my diet to mother nature diet i am fit and healthy. let go back to how our parents feed us with the good foods.
Right on..... that is why you eat this overseas and you gain weight
Shout out to all our hard-working mothers who worked so hard to put food on our table.. Mother's we love u.. Some men do cook n sell food too.. We appreciate u all🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾😘✌️
Aflata reminds me of FooFoo/FuFu.
My daughters father is Nigerian and watching him make a pot of foo foo is like wow ! It's a lot of constant stirring and flipping of the dough.
These Ghanaian women are some hard working women...much respect to them.
We women, are the salt of the earth, thumbs up to all industrious hardworking women, both in the market place and at home,we are trendsetters, big up and respect😀👍🏿🇯🇲
Someday I would like to visit Ghana girl I will eat everything.
You always gives us great content, this shows how real you are Jasmine,I admire your lifestyle.
I am not from the continent but I tip my hats off to the beautiful ladies living on the continent for there hard work and dedication. The energies the women put into there work i dont think there are paid greatly for there energies. I love me some African culture
Watching these cooking videos is always intriguing cause when I tried cooking rice with gas cooker the first time the way I was panicking and sweating 😂 What about when I try this
Princess Oniká hahaha ud have to get used to gas cooker first, baby steps...
I'm Trinidadian 🇹🇹 ... and this looks like a dish called coucou...that's also eaten with fish. Coucou is made with cornmeal (and sometimes okra, I think). But it's absolutely delicious. Our people may have been taken from the continent and dispersed, but the traditions definitely remains in us. Thanks for sharing this.
when are we going to get the cookbook or a formal list of you favorite dishes?!. I love your videos and I would learn how to eat what you cook! It looks so tasty.
It is very hygienic. Leaf wrap is a credit to Africans ,almost all are food is wrapped with leaves.Bravo! Mothers.
Watching her stir the pot was kind of melodic/calming/hypnotizing...😏😎☺️😍
I love your videos and thank you. I am part Ghanaian. Watching your videos is the first time I felt a sense of pride. I mean it. Thank you. I would like to contribute to help support these videos.
Jasmine love what u doing !! love from France !!
They are skilled, various processes, the crowing of the hens ahhhhh memories sweet memories. Renitus and malick so cute
Kinky kinky kind of remind me of cream of wheat a cereal mixed with butter and sugar and evaporated milk. Run all day. I'm 66 and still enjoy it. Shalom
Kenkey remind me of a mexican tamales the only difference is that the meat is on the inside.
Tamale is a town in Ghana
yep made with the same massa dough just with the meat added prior to the cooking.
No Tamale is a city in Ghana!
Africa Tamales 🫔 is also a Latin American food
Beautiful hard working woman. Blessings on her and the family. Thank you for the content. I grew up eating street in the Caribbean and this brings back wonderful memories 🙏.

Dear Jasmine, thank you so much for your videos, filming live on how some Ghanaian dishes are prepared. It has really helped those of us living in abroad. I would be glad if u could make videos of how snacks like darkoa(zowey), kurikuri nd etc that are difficult to prepare, so that we can get the correct recepe in preparing it. Thank you so much for helping some of us. 😘
Your statement that the viewers should be mindful of their comment about the hygiene of the people got me. More often than not those of us who have the luxury of experiencing the west denigrate our people back home. The statement of this what would kill us we would have died long ago is on point. I’m not by this statement disregarding good hygiene, but respect people wherever they are and whichever condition they find themselves. Good job. Peace
Ghana 🇬🇭 look so much like Jamaica 🇯🇲 Onepeople ❤️
