    The downtown Grand Central Shuttle Track and the track through the City Hall Loop Station are the true connections between today's NYC subway and the day it opened in 1904. The City Hall Loop Station is an irreplaceable jewel.

    if you notice, the local tracks at 33rd street are higher than the express tracks. I've seen construction notes that say that it was for a specific reason. The IRT Company wanted local trains to stop as quickly as possible and then get going as quickly as possible. So they built a slight upgrade at that local station and certain others to help the train slow down as it entered the station. Once the train moved again, there was a slight downgrade to help it move again as quickly as possible. I rode the Lex line for years, noticed the difference in grade and never understood why.

    18th Street station was the third subway station to be closed after the city takeover of the subways in 1940. First came City Hall on New Year's Eve Day, December 31, 1945. Then came Court Street on the IND, closed in 1946. 18th Street was closed in 1948. 91st Street then followed in 1959 and Worth Street in 1962.

    I fully understand that the city hall location had to be closed due to security. That said people shoulb be allowed there even if just kept on the train. That's a piece of NYC history that's too good to be kept away.

    At 31:26 notice that the local track goes slightly up grade to the 33re Street station, then slightly downgrade leaving the station. This was done to help the original IRT trains slow down to come to a stop and then accelerate to leave the station quickly. Also, I could not see any hint of where the original IRT right-of-way curved to the left to enter what is now the Grand Central Shuttle Station. Thanks for the ride.

      If one were to look at old clips of the Manhattan els, he would find that there were a number of beautiful Victorian style stationhouses with steeples. For instance, the 86th street station on the Second Ave el had a nice streple, almost like a church.

    • @tomoconnell2320

      Beautiful station. The fact it couldn’t be replicated today is a direct inditement on how disgustingly inefficient the city and associated construction projects have become. Even with infinitely more advanced digging/construction technology available to us, we cannot do what we once did centuries ago.

    @cats0182 Před 8 lety +3

    The City Hall Loop Station doesn't appear to be to be as close to Brooklyn Bridge as it's portrayed. I'll bet workers downtown today would use that station were it available. It was supposed to be the flagship station of the IRT. I wonder whether it couldn't be returned to that status. Problem is the curve is so sharp and the station is so short, it would be impossible to get people safely on and off the trains.

    • @DJHammersTrains
      @DJHammersTrains  Před 8 lety +1

      +Cats01 The station can't fit a full 10 car train, and the gap fillers needed to close the gap between the train and the platform would slow down service. On top of that, the staircases open right up in front of City Hall, a security hazard.

    • @ss04to06
      @ss04to06 Před 8 lety

      Just wondering how they were able to handle bringing trains to the South Ferry Loop for so many years since it technically has similar issues to the City Hall Loop (minus perhaps the security risk). I know gap fillers were added to the SF Loop. Is it that the Lex Av line is more heavily used?

    • @visionist7
      @visionist7 Před 5 lety +1

      They should have extended the station platform all the way around the loop in the 20s when the money and the skilled labour was still available. Open another entrance further south from the Mullett post office and build future trains with single doors at the very ends of the cars, which would open whilst the central double doors stayed closed. The station surely would have seen more foot traffic today even if only used as a pseudo-terminus for express trains turning around and heading back uptown.

    • @AimlessRyan
      @AimlessRyan Před 3 lety +1

      @@ss04to06I’m not sure if I am responding to your question correctly, but the old South Ferry station used to handle only the first five cars of the train. Which is why it was replaced. I think that’s fairly common knowledge among railfans, but maybe I’m just getting old, as I believe it’s been about 15 years since that station closed.
