- The NY Transit Museum offers tours of the majestic abandoned City Hall Station, part of the original IRT Lexington Avenue Line opened in 1904. It's a beautiful station, with Guastavino tile, skylights, colored glass tilework, and brass chandeliers. The Rafael Guastavino-designed station is unique in the system for the usage of Romanesque Revival architecture. Information about upcoming tours is available on the NY Transit Museum website: www.nytransitmuseum.org/

If this station was still open, every time a train arrived, there would be the announcement “MIND! THE GAP!”
*Watch
QuarioQuario54321 They say “Mind the gap” in London
Brayan DePaula4 They also do in Hong Kong and Singapore
@@QuarioQuario54321 No the exact version in Hong Kong through.
Gap? Geez it’s more like a chasm!
A beautiful architectural masterpiece!! Today's long trains could never stop at this station. It is currently used as s loop for the nbr 6 train
That station Would make a really awesome Cafe/Restaurant.
it's mostly closed. however, MTA does offer many tours throughout the year (expensive, $50/person).
Lol imagine trying to make a R68 go through that loop
Thats impossible
Let's ask Fan Railer to make it run with OpenBVE.
It would not even fit in IRT tunnels
Literally half of the train would be breaking the platform and the other half would be going through the wall 😂
How about an r10 lol 😂😂
I see why it was abandoned because of the curve
I thought it was abandoned after 9-11 because it is right below City Hall and would be an obvious target for a bombing.
OneMansPOV it was abandoned before the towers were even built
OneMansPOV what are you on
The station was abandoned because it was old. The station and track was on a curved loop, causing there to be a massive platform gap between the station and the train. The station is also now too short for public service, as it can't fit all the subway train cars. The station was meant for City Hall access, but they no longer have a need for a station to City Hall. Therefore, it was sealed off from the public and can only be visible on the City Hall loop tracks, where Lexington Avenue local tracks end and loop back around. This is the only way for trains to get to the other platform, so they always bypass this abandoned stations. You can catch a glimpse of it if you take the train around the loop, as long as you don't get caught riding on the train. You can also go on tours ran by the New York Transit Museum to check the station out yourself.
The station was abandoned because of its very little use. The express stations were more closer so people went there instead and due to train cars getting longer the platform was an issue so in 1945 they abandoned the station. Its legal to ride through the loop at anytime although some of my fellow transit workers may be misinformed and may say something it is not against the law to ride the train through the loop.
Excellent Footage thanks !
It would be nice to see a museum train go through here.
Fantastic video!
what a beautiful station!

Lovely. I am from NYC but never heard about this.
5:31 😂😁 people were inside the train
Jeremy Naraine lmao
It because the trains are in use but the city hall station isn't in use anymore, The Trains only go past the station to turn around and go back the other way.
Joseph Bennett But People Are specifically told to get off at the real last stop.
Cause people want to see the station
@@phinzo7885 The MTA allows people to stay on the train through the City Hall loop.
i went to the station in the summer and it was Hot!
As is most stations in the summer
Truu
Truu also
yea, no AC and no cell phone service in the metro.
Nice! I would wanna go on a Transit Museum tour to that station some day! First also!
Nice video!
Jeez that gap is HUGE!
I took 4 and 6 couple times and I have passes by here kinda interesting to go by
Now that's a tight bend!
You mean curve
And yes it is. I almost died on the train with the movement
I've seen the place by not listening to the conductor to leave and stay in the train which entered the loop. Lucky I caught the R142 6 train a few times.
Do trains still go pass here..beautiful
I wish i can go their
DJ HAMMERS CAN YOU DO A TOUR OF CONEY ISLAND STATION
First, awesome video!
This had to be Saturday or Sunday, when the 4 was not going to Brooklyn.
Yep. 4 trains were not going to brooklyn. Meaning it had to go to the bronx via the city hall loop
that screech tho
Great video. Can't imagine why they would make a station on a curve like that in the first place.. Great looking station though.
It's the last stop, beyond brooklyn bridge. the curve allows the train to u-turn and head back uptown.
Like 386 bus route takes a u turn at the end of roads in singapore
Note to self, when you build a station don't build it on a curve....Frank
Here in London we have Many curved platforms, such as Embankment, Bank, Victoria, Waterloo... Just to name a few but these platforms aren't curved severely like City Hall Station.
ooo R62A with yellow poles and new lighting
those Yellow Poles are also found on R160s
I saw a R46 4 car set with refurbishments
Интересно, как часто там меняют рельсы?
Imagine an r160 going through that loop☠
It wouldn’t fit Lmao. The lettered cars can’t fit into the IRT (numbered cars) tunnels. August Belmont who headed the IRT in the early 20th century made his tunnels smaller on purpose so nobody else could infiltrate them. The track gauge is still the standard 4 feet 8 1/2 inches on the IRT and the BMT/IND.
5 train next?
Was there a delay causing 4 trains terminating at Brooklyn Bridge City Hall and go around City Hall loop station and start again at Brooklyn Bridge City Hall heading back to Woodlawn
I believe this was a weekend G.O where 4 trains were not running south of BB - City Hall.
I saw this station in Transit City 3 in Roblox. The trains can stop there in the game, but not in real life because it's abandoned.
True it is abandoned so the train dont stop people could just look at the train pass
Same but i don't stop there
Oh wow that gap
Bet people would fall in the gap😂😂
Once they try to get in the train lol😂🤣
Whats with the W trains on the R line its cool but unusual?
@R143 R160 R188 MTA Fan i know but there were like multiple W trains in brooklyn more than usual
How did you get in there a tour/ open house
RockosBlockTalk A tour sponsored by the Transit Museum
Wait, isn't there also an Brooklyn Bridge-Side Platform?
Sharon Watkins Yes. There is.
Where is the station at?
Because I live in Brooklyn that is near to NYC!
Just beyond Brooklyn Bridge - City Hall but before Fulton Street. The track for the 6 (and the 4 for today) goes on a turn, that turn turns into a loop, then it goes back to Brooklyn Bridge - City Hall.
This station was open from October 27, 1904 to December 31, 1945.
Sorry for the negative comment but damn dude 😂😂
There’s no minding that gap.
How are people at the City Hall stop????????
I want to know what's the ABSOLUTE entrance to the City Hall station besides exiting the train?
An emergency exit hatch
There's an entrance in City Hall Park they use for the museum tours. It has the original stairs and everything but it's usually locked up of course.
This is the loop that the 6 train uses to make it's u turn back to the Bronx bound track is it not?
Malcolm Xavier It is the turnback track..
Yes it takes you from brooklyn bridge and it loops around going back to the bronx
*Wasn’t is on the weekend ¿*
Yea
Was that an R62A 4 Train ???????????????WHAT
How do you get there
stay on a southbound 6 after it terminates (you’re not really supposed to do this but just stay in the car and you’ll be safe) or go on a fan trip with the NYTM. it’s used as a loop for the 6 (and sometimes the 4) to turn back around towards the Bronx.
Why are there 4 trains there if they go straight to Brooklyn? Doesn’t the 6 only go on the loop?
Service disruptions. This happens every once in a while on the 2, 3, 4, and 5 (I’ve had my fair share of 4 trains being local East of Nevins Street when there’s no 3 service in Brooklyn)
Service changes some times
I want the R46 to do that
Why were their 4 trains passing as well
How could people get on or off here safely? It's worse than the old South Ferry!
They used different trains back in the day and IIRC the track has been adjusted as well since as it's only used for a turnaround loop.
The sexiest curve in the system, or at least one of them. 2:37
POVHFR Videos South Ferry is just as good
@@basictransportenthusiast4386 Oooo Yes!! This video: czcams.com/video/Sp6Pp4IN52Q/video.html Every time 'she' takes off is so sexy...
Imagine this station being duplicated into every terminal station even in singapore they can make it at harbourfront maybe........
bruh how did they get people inside
HQRobloxandBlocksWorldandMinecraft the New York transit museum does tours of this station a few times a year. They use a special train that lets people off at the station. However they put gap filters for safety.
Why is the 4 Train even going through the station.
the 4 sometimes terminates at either Wall Street, bowling green, or city hall. it happens very frequently, and ive seen it about six times since i started taking it to work
How come there is a 4 train?
@R143 R160 R188 MTA Fan (4) Trains runs express in Lex. Ave. They won't be able to go City Hall since, first of all, (6) Trains runs local; second, there are no tracks to access to City Hall from express. Probably there are some construction forced (4) to (6).
jonathan chan actually they can make the (4) run on the local track with the (6) so that way, the (4) can access the city hall station. This mainly happens during weekend construction however
How do you get down there ?
I always thought only 6 trains went through the loop.
It depends when construction is going on. Sometimes the 4 trains go through there too. The 5 never will because when construction is going on they usually run the 5 shuttle trains between Dyre Ave and E 180 street in the Bronx. And the 5 on regular days uses the inner South Ferry Loop to turn around after terminating at Bowling Green.
If it’s abandoned how did It get abandoned
Cuz it was trash lol.
Low ridership usage, really (cuz who wants to go to City Hall in particular), as well as that awful curve making large gaps in the entrances.
It's a gorgeous station, but it was discontinued for a reason.
When is the r142a cars coming back to 6 line
Never they were converted to r188s and are on the 7 now
And other R142A’s went to the 4
peter marrero Why do you care?
Bro’s train is nearly empty
I don’t have a life anymore.
I’m just joking lol 😅😅😅
