    That is the thickest and heartiest application of Herculiner I've ever seen.

    • @trooper1348
      @trooper1348  Před měsícem +1

      Yup, it needs to be thick, this is an off road jeep not a mall crawler, close encounters with rocks & trees is a frequent occurrence & I wanted it to be durable.

      Agree on all counts, I don’t know why they don’t do away with shingles & just coat roofs with this stuff….

    Thanks I’ve been looking all across the galaxy for something that will help me redo my bumper on jeep TJ and this was what I needed to know gonna do it in the next day or so…..This is the way…..

    • @trooper1348
      @trooper1348  Před 2 lety

      Glad I could help. If your surface is well prepped the Herculiner should lay forever.
      I put it on a roof rack for my old TJ & after 10 years of exposure to outdoor weather it never cracked or chipped or wore off. It does fade to a very dark grey after a while but it can easily be spray painted for a brand new look or if you are looking to change colors.

    I learned long ago the powder coating is a POS. It looses its shine quickly
    and soon after a piece will break off and moisure will get to the metal
    and rusting will begin. I just stripped off all the wasted PC off my
    motorhome steps and gave them a good coat of truck bed liner. I just
    bought a new truck and am preparing to coat the bed.
    The reason so much stuff comnes powder coated is that factories have
    found it is quicker & cheaper to PC than to spray paint with a high quality
    auto paint.
    !

    Hey man, I just ordered two spray cans of this stuff, for my back bumper on my dodge, looks good, I hope it turns out nice

    • @trooper1348
      @trooper1348  Před 2 lety

      Very good. Hope it turns out for you! I wasn’t very impressed with any of the spray can truck bed liners, they’re basically just a thick paint & don’t offer any substantial wear protection. The coverage is nice & even & the application is easy but the liner itself chips & peels off easily. If you’re just looking for a paint to protect from rust it should work fine but if you need some scuff & strike protection from off roading then I would seriously reconsider using the spray can stuff.
      Good luck!

      @@trooper1348 what’s a good cleaner to use before painting surface?

    • @trooper1348
      @trooper1348  Před 2 lety

      @@master_vator Like I said in the video, acetone is the best most common surface prep cleaner for a project like this. Lacquer thinner would also work.

      spray cans are good for what ytou cant hit with the brush or rollrs-- i did my cbr 600rr and add silver flake into it -- you could see it unless teh lights shined on you at night and then it looked a planaettarium--- which was cool for a bike that needs to be seen over 140mph!! plus...

    Yeah and once it's on everything, it stays on everything. I built a outdoor handicap ramp and used this to waterproof the wood, and provide a gritty non slip surface. Wear rubber gloves and clothes you won't mind tossin in the garbage.

    I'd use 240 grit ?? I dont know the product assum it fills nicely 6:44 it should be mix with a drill you can get a really small stir blade I'd thin it down after mixing use a brush with a paint on then dabbing while the product dries

    Want to do this on the hood of my sprinter van. I don't have an indoor work area. Do you think it's a problem doing this with the sun out in hawaii? Should i do it after the sun is down? Great video btw

    • @trooper1348
      @trooper1348  Před rokem

      I wouldn’t apply this in direct midday sun but if you put it on early in the morning or the evening I think it would be fine. I did the same thing to the hood of my old ‘93 F250. The hood was all beat up from hail & rusty, did a couple of coats, spray painted it white to match the rest of the truck & it looked great! Good luck!!!

    So I’m doing a new bumper, that is bear steel. I have steam cleaned it, wiped it down with xylene, and sand blasted it. Should I prime it before applying Herculiner?

    • @trooper1348
      @trooper1348  Před rokem +1

      I don’t think it’s entirely necessary to do a primer coat before the Herculiner, the stuff sticks to just about anything so I don’t see why it wouldn’t stick to bare metal. Me personally I would probably do a primer coat just to help adhesion but I think it would work fine without it. Just make damn sure every square inch is covered, any tiny bit of bare metal could start to rust & May start allowing it to peel off.

    would you recommend using herculiner on a brand new truck bed? anything i have to watch out for?

    • @trooper1348
      @trooper1348  Před 2 lety

      Absolutely.
      Herculiner would work great on a truck bed.
      I’d say just make sure the weather is going to be good enough, at least 50F, not so windy it will blow leaves & dirt all over it & no projections of rain. If doing indoors just make sure you have adequate ventilation.
      Since you will be covering a much wider area I might consider using a small roller brush to get quick even coatings.

  • @NN-sj5uv
    @NN-sj5uv Před 2 lety

    Have u used Raptor? If so, how does it compare to Herculiner?
    Have u used the Herculiner spray can? Why did u choose to go with the brush on? Have u tried using a roller?
    Lastly, I noticed that your coats are very thick whereas most often its recommended to do think coats - Any comments on your technique? Thanks for your video!

    • @trooper1348
      @trooper1348  Před 2 lety +2

      Yes I tried Raptor & I wasn’t very impressed. I actually bought cans of several different brands of truck bed liner & tried them out on test pieces for comparison to see which one stood up the best as far as wear & tear & in my opinion Herculiner still beet them all out. As far as Herculiner spray, also not impressed with that. Anything coming out of the spray cans is essentially just thick paint which can be rubbed & scratched off easily plus it doesn’t have the aggressive texture that I was looking for. Disposable rollers work fairly well on large flat surfaces but if you have lots of angles & corners such as with this bumper or a roof rack the sponge brushes are far easier.

    • @trooper1348
      @trooper1348  Před rokem +4

      I appreciate the feedback. My Jeep is built more for function than looks. I tried a patch of Raptor & a number of other products on inconspicuous areas on the inside of the bumper before I proceeded. I literally scratched the Raptor spray right off the bumper with my finger nail. So, did it look nice in the initial application? Sure. Was it durable? Would it stand up to four wheeling? NOPE. Years of exposure to moisture, sunlight, mag chloride? Meh, maybe. Wasn’t willing to find out. Besides, I personally like the rough aggressive texture. To each their own.
