They took Ben White to 2 tournaments, didn't play him a single minute. Barely played him in any friendlies. Had a row with him, took personal digs at him. And then wonder why he doesn't want anything to do with this set up.
It's a disgrace
Exactly call ups are not caps for your country.
Like he's the only one in that situation. Get a grip.

My guess is that Ben, having played under excellent coaches such as Bielsa, Potter and Arteta, also doesn't think Southgate and Holland could coach their way out of a wet paper bag.
Geez, when you put it that way with the coaches he's played under, Southgate looks like a championship manager at best. Oh wait, that's because he is.
72 years ago an Arsenal captain said "i thought the ultimate accolade was to be selected and play for England... i was wrong ... the highest honour is to play for Arsenal. " that captain said that on the day Arsenal lost in the 1952 cup final
So glad James was on this video. Repping the Arsenal fans and Benny Blanco perfectly, as ever ❤❤❤
Seems a story about nothing at all. If Ben White feels he will sit on the bench and doesn’t see the point in travelling and taking the time for no point so what. I don’t know but have a feeling not many professional footballers sit at home watching football in their spare time. and when they were younger just played at every opportunity not sat on sofa watching it.
When Chris Sutton refused a call up to England B team he was told he would never play for his country again. The disrespect to refuse an opportunity that others would kill for was seen to have crossed a line. I'm not saying that's right but it's not that wrong either.
@@edmann1820people need to understand that if a player doesn’t want to be selected, it’s their decision and it should be respected. Ben White knew his time was up with Southgate during the 71st minute of England vs Iran game at the world cup.Coming into the worldcup, White was confident he was ahead of Maguire in the pecking order but to his surprise Southgate went with his trusted Stones/Maguire partnership and White had to settle for a spot on the bench. However, with England leading 4-1 at the 71st minute, Southgate decided to take Maguire off, perhaps a chance for White to showcase his point but alas! it was Dier that came in for Maguire. This single substitution meant that White was not even the first choice cover for CB, a decision that did not go well with White. He obviously rates himself higher than a second choice cover CB.To me, this was the turning point for White, the 71st minute substitution of Dier for Maguire when England were leading 4-1 vs Iran.White must have been thinking, if I can't come on when we are leading 4-1 then I probably won't get a chance in the knockout rounds.
Big issue if you have no life. Its not a call up to defend country. Its call up to play for Southgate and Holland. His choice. Leave him alone.
Arry Rednapster should be in jail for not paying taxes. So loyal to country 😮.
No doubt opposing fans will play on it but we get more behind him. Look at abuse press and fans gave Beckham for getting sent of when he in fact shouldn't have been sent off. Ben will go on to be the nations darling 😂
Context also. Next game City and going for 2 trophies with his club, prepare well or go and get chance if injury in badly led moronic training sessions by folk he thinks are wankers and knowing he isn't playing.
What's the point in going when the coach is going to bench him throughout? 🤷🏽♂️

@@searchterminatorseed2301it is part of his psyche. Southgate plays players on his own favorites rather than real merits. The fact he actually said all that about Ben’s form tells you volumes about Southgate’s preferences. Imagine balling the way Ben White does and needing to play second fiddle to Maguire.
You mean like most of the 25 man squad? Shame this fruit can’t behave like a man.

Okay, but that Tim guy was predictably shallow: "Ben White will rue this for the rest of his life," shows he knows nothing about Ben White.
You mean u saw an arsenal fan and knew all he would do the whole time is suck your squad off. Ben White is shite and doesnt even make englands bench when all Right backs are fit. He should be honoured to even make the squad the cry baby bitch.
I've seen non Arsenal fans saying he's not even the 3rd choice RB for England. Call up those better than Ben White then. If he's truly not even 3rd choice according to those words why should he go anywhere near the England squad then?
As a CB we all know Maguire and Stones are going to play, so why would he want to go just to get benched anyway?
Exactly!
He's nowhere near top 3 Rb and the only reason he got this call up is because trippier is injured. Walker, Trippier and reece james are all clear of him and with Livramento coming through now who is already better than him he will be lucky to even make the bench.

Tbf 20 years ago there wasn't this much social media.
Everythings "content" today 😊
Both relevant points and taken on board. Call me a biased Arsenal fan if you want, but I think Gareth Southgate really threw Ben White under the bus in the press conference. He knows exactly why White doesn’t want to play for England right now and the roll that Steve Holland played in it (and I stress, RIGHT NOW. He tweeted that getting his first cap was a dream come true and that he loved every minute of it), but he made out that White had just left him in the lurch and in the dark, and put everything on him. Southgate could have taken the first amendment route and said something along the lines of “I’ve picked who I think the best players are from who is available to me at this time, and I will not be commenting any further on team selection”, but no. He decided to make a point, because he feels disgruntled, and frankly, I think the way Ben White has been treated by Southgate/Holland, along with sections of fans and pundits is absolutely disgraceful.
This is not the military or the army. Accepting a call-up is not mandatory or compulsory. You are not disrespecting your nation, or letting your country down, or committing a dereliction of duty by rejecting a call-up, as I have heard from certain sections. If we’re looking purely on form, Kyle Walker is still probably rightly first choice, but what are your options after that? Reece James is nearly always injured, Trent Alexander-Arnold is looking more and more like a No.8 by the week, Kieran Trippier is 34 this year and nowhere near the same form that he was in during the first half of the season, and Joe Gomez is not as comfortable playing full back as he is centre back. On form, and if he was available, Ben White should absolutely be in the England squad.
I’ll leave you with this: I listened to the Arsenal Vision Post Match podcast on Monday, and Tim Stillman posed a very good question: in managerial terms, Marcelo Bielsa and Mikel Arteta can be understandably looked at and defined as psychopaths and obsessive, yet both of them were able to get a tune out of Ben White. Why can’t Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland?
Maybe they’re not the man managers that they think they are.
Obviously Ben white stormed out of the World Cup and hasn’t returned since it’s so obvious something happened
@@jadmantoura4483EXACTLY. If White's commitment level is sufficient for Bielsa & Arteta (vastly superior and more intense coaches than Southgate) that obviously is not what is at issue between White and the SGate regime. I think White feels insulted by whatever happened between him and the staff. It also can't help that a shit coach in Southgate won't play him, meanwhile two coaches who are ten times more respected in Arteta & Bielsa clearly love him based on the fees they paud for him and how much playing time they gave him.
realistically speaking, it doesn't take a genius to figure out some obvious circumstances ; for instance, long as southgate is there, he knows for sure that his playing time be so limited coz SG always favours the same players

Why would I want to leave my summer break to spend time cooped up with people i don't get on with (Southgate / Holland) only to spend the entire time bench warming for players who are picked for favouritism rather than ability. For the possibility to maybe possibly play if I'm lucky? Sod that. That sounds miserable. Personally, I would have to think very hard about joining up even if I was guaranteed a starting spot if it meant having to spend time around people I can't stand. Fully behind Ben White on this
I think we are missing an important topic in this discussion and that is player wellness/mental well-being. Ben is an introvert and being "homesick" can take on another dimension. I'm rather disappointed no one discussed this in the video. Martin Keown was the only one who touched on it on a Talk Sports episode.
Great point, didn’t know that about Ben
the sheer exhaustion of having to socialize with peers you may be vaguely familiar or acquainted with, in a foreign place. We have all experienced feeling awkward in social situations, whether it be work/school/parties, and to have to be forced to do it for days/weeks on end and 24/7, sharing hotel rooms… it seems gruelling and exhausting. I, too, would rather stay home and not have to feel like im “on” all the time. AND combine it with ZERO playing time? The fraternizing atmosphere becomes exponentially more tiring and fake and displeasing.
Southgate took him to Qatar as an extra, he’s been one of Englands best defenders and is an ultra professional in everything he does.
We’re talking about a guy playing at the top who can cover across the backline and in midfield. Can invert, overlap and has even started underlapping. He has worked under super detailed, super demanding managers. Southgate and the England setup dropped the ball and we’ve seen signs of this with how often he’s picked players who are bang out of form to the detriment of others
Spot on, didn’t Southgate basically lie in the press conference? And why did he choose to do it on the day Ben receives his new contract?
It was an unpleasant thing to do and it he lied re the Steve Holland issue. Southgate is a poor poor coach and for someone who apparently brings people together.
Southgate continues pick substandard players, his favourites and it’s a scandal. Ben is miles better than Maguire, imagine Stones alongside White!
@@Cafez27 the whole Steve Holland thing is murky, I think technically he didn’t lie because either A) It’s not just about any disagreement with Steve Holland and that’s just a contributing factor B) Arsenal/Ben haven’t fully revealed all the motivations behind why he doesn’t want to play
It’s a tough one - I think like James said, Arsenal announced the contract to coincide with Southgate discussing selection. The fact that Edu has spoken to John McDermott suggested to me that there was some unofficial discussions around potentially selecting Ben for the long list. Arsenal have communicated in an official manner and England have responded in kind
I agree though - Southgate has fucked this one up and where he fucks up the most ironically is with player integration which was one of his positives. It wasn’t so bad when we weren’t blessed with options, but now we are he’s struggled. If he was relying on favourites to execute a complex football ideology you could perhaps understand it. But I often feel it’s actually simple pragmatism that creates the dilemmas. We should be exploring what a midfield 3 of Rice, Bellingham and Foden looks like but we all know we’ll see Henderson next to Rice because he’s too pragmatic. Another manager would be looking defenders comfortable to step in next to Rice and England to play on the front foot. But he won’t
White is overated 😂
@@jameshall9654 hi there I agree with nearly all of this….
The Steve Holland thing isn’t murky in my mind we have the piece by Daniel Taylor and Jack Pitt-Brooke at the at the Athletic and highly credible source. They categorically report there was a row with Steve Holland in front of teammates.
Southgate has denied their isn’t an issue between Ben and Steve, when there clearly is, as it was likely a contributing factor Ben leaving the WC as well as not featuring when lesser favourites were getting starts.
Southgate has been disingenuous. I’m unsurprised the main stream media have gone for Ben rather than Gareth who is a truly awful coach. Thanks goodness for the new media!
As a United Fan...I DONT BLAME BEN WHITE AT ALL, Most people ive spoken to, side with Ben...imagine being expected to be happy being a Benchwarmer because the reward is just being called up, Nah...We all probably can guess England start 11 regardless of what happens during the season, in relation to form...

lol when most of the league are laughing at a guy like Maguire and Ben misses out to a hack like him of course he is not interested.
"Play for England" I would argue is a misnomer, when the reality is he'd be sat on the bench while Maguire is playing a full 90.
Not to mention, he's probably the player who is most in simpatico with Saka, the nailed on RW for England. Southgate's favouritism has come back to haunt him.
@@sensibility1174 What other RW players do England have? I would argue Arsenal took the chance on Saka, as opposed to Southgate.
Poor analysis. Southgate pretending that he doesn't know why Ben left the training camp, then made himself unavailable for selections is pure bs. And the media should be highlight that. So, Southgate didn't think to ask? If Arteta said he knows why Ben left, how can Southgate not know....really.

Ben White is a professional footballer who is contracted to play for Arsenal, there is no contractual obligation for him to play (or sit on the bench for Egland).
It is entirely his decision, so I do not see what the fuss has been about and if Southgate is feeling aggrieved that White doesn't want to play for him he needs to look in the mirror and admit that he has probably brought White's no play decision on himself.
Southgate has McGuire so why does he need Ben? I’d feel exactly the way Ben feels. Southgate should take a look at the mirror.
Southgate's assitant manager berates Ben White in front of witnesses .And Southgate states his assistant manager didn't have a fallout with Ben . To me that would indicate Southgate is either a Liar and or a fool for not knowing the truth. AN INQUIRY INTO THIS SOULD BE STARTED . IF GUILTY Southgate should be removed as England Manager.
And yet the other players that were there don’t have a problem. Solve that mystery 🤷♂️
Let's be honest, he wants to play for England - just not Southgate. For a manager who is ultimately risk averse and has clear favourites (regardless of form) I can sympathise with White. He's behind Walker, TAA and Trippier and probably still not got guarantees of game time.
Look. No one likes Southgate. Hence everyone is backing Ben white. It’s just the default position most people will take. It’s not due to shifting times.
I should be MORE EXCITED than ever to see our English team perform in a major tournament. We have the best set of genuinely world class players I’ve seen in a long, long time.
However, I am sorta DREADING the tournament. Because I think Southgate is going to make stupid decisions and squander the talent and not get the most out of them. That really is a shame. Selection, tactics, subs in crucial moments, setup, chemistry - most people think he gets it wrong. He’s had the easiest runs in tournaments and that’s the only thing that has meant England has done well recently. They have, in fact, underperformed.
Majority of the country says Southgate out and has been saying it for a long time. I don’t even understand why he’s still here and why we’re stuck with him. Who decides if he gets to stay or go?
I don't know who all these people are your talking about are. Myself and others I know realize Southgate has done the best job with England since we won the world Cup since 66. QF, SF and Final. We use to go out in the groups or first round of every tournament or not qualify at all. People don't realize how consistently shit we were, and now we're consistently challenging people aren't happy we don't win a cup competition every two years. Fucking delusional
Don’t see what the fuss is about. Ben White is currently being trained by a world class manager at club level and his actions show he clearly doesn’t rate Southgate and his coaching staff. If more players did this it might put some pressure on the FA to stop accepting mediocrity and ditch Southgate and let someone else have a go.
If Harry Kane said he didn’t want to be selected for England at the moment, I guarantee the pressure would be on the England management and not the player
I think he’s not playing for 3 reasons: no pitch time, managed by liars, managed by a manager who has never won anything, as a manager and just a league cup as a player doesn’t provide a good ground for respect.
The fact Southgate hasn’t once thought to try and play Ben White in his legitimate position (CB) over Harry maguire just shows how inept he has become in the manager role.
A CB pairing of stones and White has amazing ball playing potential, they are both incredibly versatile too,
Not even remotely needed to be discussed
prefer maquire...
The main media (Sky, Talksport, TNT) struggle to acknowledge that Gareth Southgate is unpopular and won't acknowledge that players don't believe in him as a manger
Honestly, southgate is BSing. Ben White doesnt want to play for Southgate or his assistant coach. I dont blame White. Who would want to play for a toxic management team like that. In addition, who would want to play in an International friendly especially when its the business end of the season and your club is in contention? They are a total waste of time. A final distinction needs to be made, saying that he doesnt want be be selected by Southgate doesnt mean he doesnt want to play for England. Can anyone see the difference? At least he didnt feign injury.
Finally a mature discussion around the topic.
Though, stop disrespecting Burley, Reading, Forrest and Luton 😂
Thank you. What a fantastic episode........unlike the ones that I have heard so far on the same topic. I support Ben White for his decision....... whatever the motivation...... it's his decision to make and we don't know the whole story. Also a big shout out to Arsenal for supporting him.

Would have been very interesting to see the same peoples reaction if it was rashford or sterling or saka instead of Ben white refusing to play for England🤔
I see what you did there. Truth.
Sterling would’ve been Crucified 100 times over
Yeah but they're playing. They're in the bubble as it were.
Seriously? You’re holding Roy Keane up as a good example? He literally walked out on Ireland on the eve of the 2002 WC for falling out with his manager.
No he fell out with the manager along with the FAI. Keane was upset from the moment he got on the plane as the players were flying economy while the coaching and admin staff were in first class.
@@andrewbryce2707He left over his row with McCarthy, when McCarthy accused him of faking an injury.
This is great content and a great discussion. Good contributions from everyone.
For me itjust adds to my feeling that no England manager should be in post for as long as Southgate has been, he's about 2 or 3 years past his use by date at this point.
Inevitably managers have their favourite players, those who they see as fitting in with their system and who they get on with. Over time other players realise it doesn't matter what they do they're not going to play and lose motivation, at club level they can agitate a move or not sign a new contract, at internatoinal level they have the choice not to turn up. If the favourites are genuinely the best and playing well then the back up's can probably live with it, not many strikers over the last x-years will have thought they genuinely deserved to play over Harry Kane. But if the favourites are clearly failing and out of form or not even playing for their club then that's going to de-motivate the squad players. Changing manager means that the back ups have more motivation, the new coach may play a different system and want something else from their players and just have a different personality, which can all mean a better chance of playing and a period to impress.
In the end though there are always good players who don't end up playing as much as they possilby should for their international teams for whatever reason, be it the manager, sytle of play, or having generational tallent ahead of them in their position, and Ben White may well end up as one of them.
next time you bemoan footballers or managers for giving boring stock media trained answers, remember how one comment about not wanting to take your work home with you has followed White around. Absolutely ridiculous.
I am not an Arsenal or England fan, I am a Milan fan. This is the result of good players being left out for worse players. Tomori has been incredible for us, and yet he doesn't get called up. With all due respect, Tomori has played at a much higher level than most English CBs. Konsa? Dunk? Braithwaite? Maguire? It is absurd. This is the result of Southgate and his loyalty. I have no love for England, but England is one of the strongest squads in Europe and Southgate has underachieved with the talent at his disposal.
He's a terrible manager, this Ben White fiasco is his doing.
Agree with you about Tamori, he is in direct competition with Maguire and is overlooked despite form.
But Ben white plays in position where england have most depth. Don’t see where he was unfairly omitted
He must think there is literally nothing he could do to take Maguire's place (similarly, there's nothing Maguire could do in a negative sense that would make Southgate remove him, including long periods not playing for his club, with Southgate giving Maguire game time to compensate for not playing for United, which is like living in upside down world. Southgate has decided to gift the 2018 squad who put his name on the map permanent places in the team/squad as a sign of loyalty. Small club mindset (which is where Southgate should be managing).
Excellent content - professional sound etc..... congrats
For gods sake, Southgate was asked a direct question and he a gave a clear and honest answer. This is not on Southgate, so the press should stop gaslighting.
That was a clearly planted question
@@010101110100multiple right backs are injured. White is fit and in form. Why wouldn’t his omission be questioned
Ben White deserves respect, He is doing a fantastic job as a player, A true professional 👏
He deserves nothing, he gets paid well to do a good job. It’s the minimum
Stones play 5 matches per season, always makes the team regardless, Harry Maguire was a calamity dor the better part of 3years, he was first name on the team for Southgate every single time, i dont begrudge White for not wanting to play at this time
Reminds me of Nikola Jokic. Great pro. Won the championship with Denver. Deuces the team. But it is a job. He does no interviews. Isn’t on social media. Goes back to Serbia in the summer. Just does the job really well.
I think they touched on it only a little bit, they mention that it might be about ego, but it’s also about expectations, white might or might not accept a bench role like coady or ramsdale, but importantly if he was told that he would be rotation or squad player and expect to get some minutes then gets his expectations betrayed it would be a huge reason not to want to get called up
He doesn't want to play for a League 2 quality defensive coach. How is that going to help his career?
Ben White has his reasons, the media need to lay off him!
Fair play to him. Giving his position to someone who really wants to be there. It’s not like he turned up and didn’t put any effort in.
Times have changed for certain. From what we now know Fabio Capello he wasn't a great people manager. Rio Ferdinand has gone on record saying that he isolated certain players, was distant, didn't work on team spirit etc.
You could even argue that Capello tactically made huge mistakes considering the quality of the squads he had available to him. But we don't know of any players who refused to play for him as a manager. I don't criticise his decision but like a said times have changed
He's honest in saying he doesn't want to go and that suits everyone, short and long term.
Would like to see that honesty more often.
I really wish he would play for England, but he will never start under Southgate despite him being on the same wave length as Saka and his huge crossing potential. And if Southgate wanted a solid defender who can still overlap and cross to Harry Kane who is very prolific, it would be better playing him that TAA.
My respect for anyone who puts club over country couldn't be higher. Well done Ben👍 Please do the same Liverpool players.
Because he was treated dispectfully. Respect to him.
The analysts were very brilliant!
Nobody's gonna mention that Southgate lied? No? Okay then.
Ben White is exposing Southgate for his bias and favouritism on certain players that we know are always chosen and play whether they're in form or not
Trent, James, Trippier and Walker. Which of these players has Ben white outperformed over 5 years🤷♂️
John Stones and Ben White as Cbacks...not bad..but Southgate keeps picking out of form Maguire...
Southgate showed he'll hang any player out to dry if it benefits him. Such a weak a feckless way to handle it. That manager doesn't deserve Ben White. Also, any brand trying to profit off it is stupid and shameless.
What’s crazy is when Southgate said nothing, he was constantly criticised for it. Now he has addressed the elephant in the room he’s ’hung him out to dry’ English people are fu*king miserable and cannot be pleased
Who wants to be part of that team when Maguire Henderson tripper and even Walker declining this year starts just common sense.
Great broadcast guys.
You guys have completely ignored the fact that Southgate does not necessarily pick the best players on form to his England team. Look at for example Barkley, he is playing with a relegation struggling team and putting in performances week in week out. James ward prowse, he has his favorites and is tactically a good manager. The sooner he leaves the better it is for the England team.
Relieved is an understatement
It’s obvious Southgate is loyal to certain group of players within his squad’s. If I know I’m better than Harry Maguire, Jordon Henderson, and these players keep getting picked ahead of me. Why bother? Plus in that tournament after clearly winning the group, he didn’t even feature him in the last game, just to add some playing time to his Cv, as a World Cup player.
If he doesnt want to play for England then move on. Englands chances of success arent going to be determined by a right back who wont even play, especially one that doesnt really seem too bothered about the national team
White sounds like a cry-baby. Every other single player who has played for Southgate has said it's a great environment. Probably best to stick to choking under pressure at Arsenal.
If we abolished those useless international friendlies mid-season this conversation would be redundant. It is an intense time for the league and the champions league, while this conversation is a distraction from the football that actually matters!
The title feels grammatically incorrect. I know it isn't, but just moving one word makes it read so much better imo.
17:16 - does a professional football journalist really find it "bizarre" that Villa fans would boo and sing naughty songs about Jordan Henderson? Really? It's pretty well-known that he's become incredibly unpopular due to his move to Saudi (and the interview he did with the Athletic trying to justify it, no less!) so I find "bizarre" that someone who's job it is to know this shit would find it strange.
Because lord Gareth says no. Can’t wait for the euros under lord Gareth, defending a 1-0 lead for 80 minutes, wooooo can’t wait. #Southgateout
Ben White's "I don't watch football" quote will follow him like Mitoma's "degree in dribbling"
Will it? Maybe, but there are many footballers just like him
👍 "Under this manager" being the key phrase.
You are also talking about a man who doesn’t like watching football, taken to a tournament just for a front seat to see the games? Miss me with that.
Maybe the way nationals teams are perceived as having to select the best and most in form players for each tournament needs to change to a more youth centric approach and be an opportunity to give minutes for players U23 or U25 who arent getting many regular minutes at club level but have the potential and desire to play for the national team. Basically the opposite of how its now.
Was there as much fuss when Charlie George told England to sod off back in 1976?
hey most of us are club over country, if a potential title or cup is at stake. Ben White is a warrior and a tenacious, great player. Arsenal are lucky to have him.
The most balanced discussion ... ever 😊
Fact is, white isn't good enough to break into that England defence, he's a back up at best, there are many many more better players we can take, we don't want cry babies in the squad, glad he's staying home will be better for him.
As for throwing white under the bus, Southgate has done no such thing he has simply answered the questions put to him, it's upto Ben himself to come out and tell the truth.
